Buick's Grand National was in a class of its own. This was one of the fastest American production cars of its time. This is a true 1987 Buick Grand National with GNX trim added throughout. This is not one of the original 547 GNX Grand Nationals. This car has just had the GNX aesthetics added for the look.

This car can't be told from an original GNX from the exterior or interior. This '87 GN has some extra curb appeal to it for sure.

The exterior showcases one repaint completed in 2013 of the original black. The paint is in good condition. There are some paint chips and flaws when you look closely. The door jambs could have been finished out better.

Under the hood is the powerful 3.8 liter turbo-charged V6 engine. This engine was rebuilt in 2013 to stock specifications for reliability / driveability sake. We have receipts for much of the parts and work performed. Brass freeze plugs have been installed. The brake booster was upgraded to the newer GM booster to avoid future issues. The original Grand National power brake system was notorious for problems later in life. Further inspection of the engine compartment will reveal original sheetmetal throughout the firewall, inner fenders and core support. The intercooler piping is polished along with the turbo heat shield.

The interior features factory bucket seating in the original two-tone configuration. The upholstery is in good condition, front to back.

The dash displays the original instrumentation and radio, all functional. An aftermarket A-pillar gauge setup has been installed with an Air/Fuel ratio gauge and fuel pressure gauge. The fuel pressure gauge has some LEDs burned out. The dash itself is clean and straight, free of cracking or distortion that can occur with this generation with improper care and storage. There is a dual gauge pod just in front of  the shifter with an aftermarket oil pressure gauge, again some of the LEDs are burned out.

The door panels are in decent condition and the door undersides are solid, indicative of a dry climate Grand National. This car needs some odds and ends to really finish it out. The outer window wipes are cracked and worn, in need of replacement. Also the door weatherstripping is worn and cracked in areas.

The undercarriage displays original flooring throughout. The front end suspension has been aligned and worked on recently. The U-joints have been recently replaced along with the tie rod ends with verifying receipts. The rubber frame bushings have been replaced with polyurethane bushings. The frame itself is in excellent condition throughout.

Buick's Grand National is equally at home on the track or the street. This example has not been raced. It is a street machine. The GNX-type wheels are fitted with recent radial tires sized at 245/50R16s and 255/50R16s.

Junkyard Gem: 1983 Buick LeSabre Estate Station Wagon, Rocky Mountain High Edition

Thu, Mar 23 2017

If you live in Colorado and want an affordable chariot to haul you and your snowboarding droogs to the slopes, you could get one of the obvious cheapskate choices, e.g., a Tercel 4WD, a Corolla All-Trac, or an 80s 4WD Subaru wagon. However, if you want to channel the spiritual forefathers of early-1980s punk rock (and you do), you'll need a big, battered, Detroit bomb. This '83 LeSabre, spotted in a Denver self-service wrecking yard, is such a car. As you can see in 1984's Suburbia, you're pretty much halfway to being a member of The Vandals when you drive a couple of tons of once-luxurious Detroit Iron. 1983 was the final year of the Malaise Era, and so you didn't get much power from the V8s back then. The standard engine for the LeSabre that year was an Olds 307 generating a mere 140 horsepower. The only way to get a burnout out of this setup was to pour a case of Lucky Lager over the right rear tire, then neutral-drop the transmission while floating the valves. Chrysler and Nissan dominated the Whorehouse Red car interiors during the 1980s, but GM made a respectable showing with this scratchy, velour-influenced stuff. When you know you're a car's last owner, nothing holds you back from decorating it to suit your tastes. Ron Paul, the Snowboarders + Skiers For Christ, and many other icons of Buick-driving snow enthusiasts are represented upon the ample flanks of this wagon. How many miles are on it? With a five-digit odometer, there's no telling. The Colorado sun is rough on interiors, but this car may have spent its first couple of decades parking in a garage, or maybe it came from cloudy Oregon. Advertising for this generation of LeSabre emphasized fuel economy, which may have been a less-than-convincing approach. Related Video:

eBay Find Of The Day: 1946 Tucker Torpedo Prototype II hides a secret Riviera

Thu, 10 Jul 2014

The Tucker Torpedo is one of the great what-if stories of automotive history. Preston Tucker hoped to revolutionize the industry with a car unlike any other on the road at the time. However, due to a variety of problems, he only managed build 51 vehicles before closing shop. Over time, they have become highly sought-after; In 2012, one sold for $2.65 million at auction.
That brings us to this Tucker "replica" that you see above because it might be one of the ugliest monstrosities ever put together. However, we might extend some leniency to the creator, as the vehicle isn't actually trying to replicate the classic look of the 1948 Tucker Torpedo. Instead, it is attempting to reproduce an earlier prototype from 1946 that actually features that weird, trident nose. According to the seller, his uncle built the car as a labor of love and supposedly used actual plans from Tucker as inspiration.
Underneath all of the crazy changes is a 1971 Buick Riviera powered by a 455-cubic-inch (7.5-liter) Buick V8. Some of the replica's odder modifications include the front fenders that turn with the wheels and the fin running down the back. All three headlights work, but the one in the middle is only for the high beams. Oddly, the small hinged sections on the roof are meant to open to avoid hitting your head when getting in or out. Maybe the seller's uncle was a very tall guy?

Updated Buick LaCrosse, Regal to debut at New York Auto Show

Tue, 26 Feb 2013

Judging by the spy shots we saw last week for the 2014 Buick LaCrosse and 2014 Buick Regal, we knew it wouldn't be much longer until we saw both sedans receive a grand debut. Today, Buick confirmed to Autoblog both cars will be introduced at the New York Auto Show next month, but no further information has yet been released about either model.
Having been on the market for an extra couple years, the changes to the LaCrosse appear to be more significant than those coming for the Regal, but both will be getting refreshed exterior designs as well as updated interiors. The Regal's new face brings it more in line with the all-new Encore and the restyled Enclave, while the LaCrosse should get a more distinctive, upscale appearance.
Both cars will be introduced exactly a month from today, and we'll be there to bring you all the coverage.
