Up for auction is my 1984 Buick Electra Hearse.  This is a Sayers and Scoville (S&S) conversion and is in excellent shape for a 30 year old car.  I've owned the car for about two months and it has been my daily driver for that time.  I purchased the car locally and have made several 100+ mile trips with no problems whatsoever.  I own several hearses and am running out of room for the Buick.  Anyway, the body of the car is in excellent shape for the year.  There is no rust on the car as it was undercoated previously.  The paint is okay, but there is some cracking of the paint on the hood and a few touchups here and there.  Again, this is a fully functional car that goes down the road just fine.  The vinyl top is really nice with no cracks, tears, or peeling anywhere.  All of the power windows work and the driver's door has a new window motor which I installed.  There are no leaks of any kind along the windshield or any other window.  The interior is virtually flawless in front and back.  It includes the pins that hold the casket in place as well.  The engine is the 5.0 liter V-8 with a carburetor.  These aren't known for having lightning speed or power but it runs flawlessly with no noises of any kind.  The car currently has 76,835 miles on it.  The air conditioning works and has been converted to the newer coolant.  It does blow cold air, but should have a can or two of coolant added.  The brakes are good with no squealing.  Tires are in great shape with about 3/4 of the tread life left.  The oil was recently changed as well.  Every light works including the S&S trademark coach lamps on the side of the car.  There a couple of issues that you should know about.  There is a bit of rust along the tops of the back side doors.  One of my other hearses has this as well.  It doesn't leak, but I would have it repaired.  I took a photo of that and I hope it shows as I want to be completely honest here.  There is also a crack at the very bottom of the windshield on the driver's side.  There is a photo of that as well.  It does not leak, and since it's at the very bottom, it does not in any way hamper your vision.  Also, the car does not have commercial glass in it, so if you had the windshield replaced you could use a stock windshield.  The cruise control does not work.  The hood ornament is also missing.  As far as I know of the history of the vehicle, it came from Pennsylvania.  It was purchased by the previous owner a few years back from the funeral home.  The car has been kept in a garage and was well taken care of.  This would make a great vehicle for Halloween and also for a daily driver.  I live in the Saginaw, Michigan area, and if you are reasonably close, I'm sure we could work something out on getting the vehicle to you.  I'd be willing to help out any way I can, otherwise the winning bidder will be responsible for transporting the vehicle.  Thanks for looking and bidding on a nice S&S Buick Electra Hearse.

KBB 2013 Brand Image Awards has some obvious and oddball winners

Sat, 30 Mar 2013

The sixth edition of the Kelley Blue Book Brand Image Awards have crowned a wide range of winners - in a couple of cases the recipient of the laurels might say more about KBB users than they do about the actual winner. Compiled from the responses of more than 12,000 shoppers on KBB.com over the past year, there are 13 categories broken into non-luxury, luxury and truck segments "representing the combined wisdom of the American car-buying public."
The award categories have been revamped this year, with some dropping off, some new ones appearing and at least one other given a new term. What isn't surprising is that Honda won Most Trusted Brand for the second year running, Best Value Brand for the third year in a row and took Best Overall Brand, which wasn't on last year's list of awards.
On our own shores, in the non-luxury categories Chrysler got Most Refined Brand and Buick took Best Value Luxury Brand. Neither one of those marques won anything in last year's Brand Image Awards, while Cadillac, which won Best Interior Design Brand and Best Comfort Brand last year - those awards disappeared this year - went home without a single accolade.

GM laying off more than 4,000 workers Monday morning

Sat, Feb 2 2019

According to reports from Automotive News, The Detroit News, and CNN, General Motors plans to begin laying off more than 4,000 salaried workers starting Monday morning. In a statement to AN, a spokesperson for the automaker said, "We are not confirming timing. Our employees are our priority. We will communicate with them first." We've been expecting layoffs at General Motors since November, 2018. At the time, the Detroit-based automaker announced it would seek to shed 8,100 salaried employees, shut down five assembly plants in North America, and kill off several slow-selling models. One month earlier, GM offered buyout packages to 18,000 workers and said it would seek to cut its global workforce by 25 percent. A spokesperson said at the time the moves were "proactive steps to get ahead of the curve by accelerating our efforts to address overall business performance." The cost-cutting moves are expected to save GM up to $2.5 billion in 2019 and as much as $6 billion by 2020. David Kudla, CEO and chief investment strategist of Mainstay Capital Management, referred to the impending culling as "Black Monday" and told The Detroit News that the layoffs would begin around 7:30 a.m. and continue in waves throughout the coming days and weeks. GM plans to deliver on its fourth-quarter and full-year 2018 earnings report on Wednesday. President Donald Trump plans to deliver the annual State of the Union address a day earlier on Tuesday. We expect to hear plenty more from both sides over the next several days.

Buick takes top spot in 2022 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study

Tue, Jun 28 2022

People, economies, and supply chains weren't the only things continuing to get sick over the past year. The 2022 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS) is out, showing the average rate of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) during the first 90 days of ownership increased overall. The average figure for the 32 ranked manufacturers in 2020 was about 166 problems per 100 vehicles. In the 2021 IQS, that dropped to an average of 162. This year, the average jumps to 180 problems. J.D. Power says that figure is a record high over the 36-year history of the study. Buick leapt to the top of the rankings this year with the fewest issues, at 139 problems per 100 vehicles in the first 100 days of ownership. After Dodge became the first American automaker to lead the IQS in 2020, followed by Ram in 2021, this year marks a three-peat for U.S. carmakers. Dodge took second this year at 143 PP100, Chevrolet third with 147 PP100, Genesis the first luxury maker on the chart in fourth with 156 PP100. Between February and May, this year's study gathered responses to 223 questions from more than 84,000 new 2022-model-year car owners and lessees. The questions are designed to zero in on real-world problems new owners encounter with nine categories of vehicle features: Infotainment; features, controls and displays; exterior; driving assistance; interior; powertrain; seats; driving experience; and climate. As has been the case in the past few year, infotainment has proved to be the most problematic bugbear making scores worse. Considering features individually, six of 10 of the worst problem areas dealt with infotainment, causing infotainment's score of 45 PP100 to be 19.5 PP100 worse than the second-placed feature. Consumers ranked getting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to connect reliably as the most troublesome.  GM didn't just score with Buick, which was one of only nine of the 33 ranked brands to show improvement this year. The conglomerate earned first place with the fewest PP100 among all the automaker groups, and scored the most model-level awards with nine, ahead of BMW with eight and Hyundai Group with three.  This year's study again showed a gap between luxury and mass-market makers, thought to be down to the amount of tech in luxury vehicles that consumers aren't properly informed about or that doesn't act as expected — that latter issue exacerbated by the chip shortage.
