February, 2010 - Tucked in among the bumper crop of offerings at the 2009 AACA Fall Meet was this colonnade: Buick's 1973 Gran Sport. Rarely seen and often underappreciated, a properly equipped Gran Sport (that is the official name; the GS designation was dropped after 1972) was still a viable muscle car in a very unmuscular automotive world. To get there, however, you had to move further down the option chart since the Gran Sport package was relegated to a trim level. Its base two-barrel, 350-cu.in. V-8 could have been swapped out for a four-barrel 350, a 455 or the high-demand 455 Stage 1; the M-21 four-speed was also offered, but the Stage 1 mandated the Turbo 400 automatic.

The seller of this particular example provided onlookers with the original dealer order sheet that listed 21 options, including the 190hp four-barrel 350 ($46); custom paint ($113); vinyl top ($84); dual exhaust ($30); chrome wheels ($92); whitewalls ($32); air conditioning ($397); GS package ($173). In all, the 21 options added $1,689 to the base Century's $3,130.45 sticker.

Said sticker aside, we did one quick lap around the find, anticipating the discovery of rust, as is often the case with 1970s metal. What we instead found was nothing but very presentable paint over seemingly original body panels. The same could be said of the interior, which, viewed through locked doors looked nearly blemish-free. In fact, it actually looked as though it was an as-advertised low-mileage car.

And there we stood, staring lustfully at a fine example of posh performance. Dreams of endless, empty highway flashed past with the faint sound of Flint's more fuel-efficient 350 singing its wide-open gospel. Whether or not anyone actually jumped at the chance to pilot this big-bumper Buick off the Hershey Park grounds is unknown to us.

Next Buick Regal coming in 2017, could be imported from Germany

Sun, 03 Aug 2014

The Buick Regal is based on the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia, a pair of sedans from General Motors' European and British outfits. In fact, over 46,000 Regals from model years 2010 and 2011 were screwed together on the same lines as the Insignia twins, before GM's Oshawa, Ontario factory took over production fully. Considering this closeness, rumors that claim the next-generation Regal - due for 2017 - could move back to Europe aren't terribly surprising. Here's why, according to Automotive News.
Oshawa is home to three other vehicles, aside from the Regal - the Chevrolet Camaro, Impala rental queen and the Cadillac XTS. We already know next-gen Camaro production is headed to Lansing, MI, and that the fleet-only Impala will (finally!) die in 2016. As for the XTS, as AN explains it, sales are so slow that GM will either kill it or just shuffle its production volume elsewhere.
Taken along with the fact that Unifor, the Canadian labor union repping workers at the Oshawa factory, claim GM hasn't made any guarantees about future production at the nearly 60-year-old factory, it seems fairly clear that the Regal's current factory is going to be put out to pasture.

GM recalls over 230,000 more Trailblazer-family SUVs over door electronics

Sun, 16 Jun 2013

Back in August, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a recall on the General Motors GMT360 SUVs (Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7X) ranging from the 2005 to 2007 model years and the 2006 GMT370 SUVs (Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL) due to potential fires associated with the driver's door module. Initially limited to 250,000 units sold or registered in 20 Snow Belt states (and the District of Columbia), the recall has now been expanded to include an additional 193,000 of these SUVs in the US and, according to The Detroit News, 40,000 more sold outside the US, including Canada and Mexico.
Like the original recall, the issue is still a faulty driver's door module that can short out, which could lead to a fire. The Detroit News is reporting that, out of the 443,000 units being recalled, GM says that there were 58 fires that caused 11 minor injuries, and the expanded recall accounted for six fires and one injury. Despite the lower number of fires, the recall notice recommends that owners park their vehicles until the recall repairs has been performed.
On recalled units with functional modules, the repair consists of a protective coating being applied to the module, while vehicles with modules that are not working properly will have the driver's door module replaced. The official recall notice is posted below, and it includes contact information for customers of all five brands.

The importance of Angel Eyes, Ventiports and four round taillights

Sun, 01 Sep 2013

Just the other day, we told you about how Lincoln isn't really a luxury brand, according to Ford's head design man, J Mays. His argument was that Lincoln lacked the unique DNA to differentiate it from the rest of the market, although the arrival of the MKZ is beginning to change that. Now, we have this video from Autoline Detroit, where Jim Hall, an analyst for 2953 Analytics who was quoted in yesterday's Lincoln story, explains the influence of certain styling cues and how they impact the brands.
Using BMW (Angel Eyes) and Buick (Ventiports) as examples for small, simple touches that serve to distinguish the brand's vehicles on the road, Hall then points out how changing trademark styling features, as Chevrolet has done on the new Corvette Stingray, can hurt the vehicle's public perception. Take a look at the full video below for an interesting dive into what these styling features mean to their individual brands.
