Demand for Bugatti's Chiron Pur Sport is exceeding expectations
Thu, Jul 16 2020Bugatti's handling-focused Chiron Pur Sport should have been one of the stars of the 2020 Geneva auto show, but the event was canceled at the last minute due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Although customers weren't able to see the firm's newest model in person, demand has nonetheless been exceptionally high. Geneva is a major event for brands like Bugatti because it's one of the last shows where customers go to spend money, not just to sit in cars and play around with the infotainment system. Members of the company's sales and marketing team consequently had to find other ways to present the model; some potential buyers were shown the Pur Sport online, while a handful have seen it in person as it tours Europe. All have given it a warm welcome. "Feedback from customers that have seen the car, online or in person, has been positive. It's exceeding expectations," a spokesperson for the company told Autoblog. Bugatti will continue showing the car to loyal customers in Europe, and it will soon set sail across the Atlantic to make its debut on American soil. Sixty units of the Pur Sport will be built by hand in Bugatti's Atelier in Molsheim, France. It's the latest member of the Chiron family, which also includes the standard model introduced at the 2016 edition of the Geneva show and the record-breaking Super Sport 300+ unveiled in 2019. Frank Heyl, the company's deputy design director, told Autoblog that customer requests play a big role in shaping the different directions his team takes the Chiron in. "We have customers who really demanded a more reactive, more emotional car. This was, of course, one idea. We said, 'OK, let's do it,' and we started developing this car," he said. Heyl stopped short of telling us what's next, but his team won't run out of ideas — and customers won't run out of requests — anytime soon. In the meantime, Bugatti's team of intrepid road testers is fine-tuning the Chiron Pur Sport by putting it through its paces on various tracks, including the Nurburgring. Production is scheduled to start in the second half of 2020. Related Video:  Â
Bugatti Vision Le Mans designer's concept is ion-powered
Tue, Feb 18 2020Bugatti hasn't raced since the middle of the 1990s when Romano Artioli, its former owner, built an EB110 for the IMSA GT series and converted a second example to Le Mans specifications. The company is not actively planning a return to the track, don't expect to see a Chiron compete in 2020, but it still embraces its vast motorsport heritage, so one of its youngest designers dedicated his thesis to exploring what form a comeback could take. The Vision Le Mans concept shown in renderings puts a forward-thinking spin on the Type 35. Max Lask, a talented student who recently graduated from the Brunswick University of Art in Germany, explained his goal was not to create a retro-styled racer. That would have been too easy. Instead, he wanted to design a car that would be as advanced in 2050 as the Type 35 was when it made its debut at the 1924 Grand Prix of Lyon. There's a futuristic interpretation of Bugatti's horseshoe-shaped grille up front, but that's where the similarities between the Vision Le Mans concept and current members of the automaker's range end. The rest of the car is an ode to the principles of aerodynamics. Every wing, vent, fin, and scoop serves a specific purpose. Speculating what Le Mans-bound race cars will run on in 2050 required intense mental gymnastics. Motorsport is often at the forefront of innovation, so even 2020's most advanced technologies will look comically obsolete in 30 years. To that end, Lask envisioned a powertrain that runs on ions — and not the Saturn kind. It sounds far-fetched, but spacecraft already use xenon ion thrusters, and MIT successfully tested an ion-powered plane, so the technology exists. In his thesis, Lask opined it could sooner or later trickle down to the automotive industry. Bugatti stressed the Vision Le Mans concept is a one-off project Lask created to complete his design program, and it's not a preview of an upcoming model. While the French company is rooted in racing — the aforementioned Type 35 earned over 2,000 victories between 1924 and 1930 — the Circuit de La Sarthe isn't currently on the company's radar. Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo is the future, now [w/video]
Tue, Sep 15 2015As a gamer, the addition of the Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo to the Gran Turismo 6 lineup is fun, but pretty forgettable. The be-winged Bug joins a roster of spectacularly fast virtual metal, for a title that – much as it pains me personally to say this – is more out of date than ever. But the fact that Bugatti built the concept in more than just pixels is the interesting part. That "completion of the Veyron chapter" business indicates that the Vision car might have some bearing on the company's future ultracar plans. From a design perspective, this concept is clearly over the top, though there are elements that would seem reasonable as extrapolated to a production car. The ovoid aperture that encircles each door seems thematically correct, relative to the Veyron, as, of course, does the now-more-pointed horseshoe grille. Bugatti has evoked a kind of Formula One nose with the rest of the fascia, but the aggressively wide and raked light pods may make their way to a future face. As for the Batmobile-meets-Le Mans rear end? Well, some things are better left for the video game. That said, the single-strip rear taillight would be an awfully cool nighttime signature for one of the world's most famous sports cars. Pick out the elements you'd like to see on a Bugatti production car, and tell us about them, in Comments.
