Discover the two coupes Bugatti wanted to sell alongside the Chiron

Mon, Feb 17 2020

Bugatti has released two cars since it joined the Volkswagen Group in 1998: the Veyron and the Chiron. Both are high-horsepower, multi-million-dollar machines built in strictly limited numbers. That wasn't the original plan; executives envisioned a three-car range during the 2010s. Autoblog went right to the source to discover a pair of coupes — one below the Chiron and one well above — that were cancelled and have never been seen before. The French company first attempted to revive the practice of coachbuilding in the 2000s, but it shifted nearly every part of the process in-house because a majority of the companies it worked with during the 1920s and the 1930s were long gone. While this added significant costs and complexity, the success of Lamborghini's few-off models (like the Reventon) proved collectors were ravenous for exclusivity and more than willing to pay a lot for it. "We were not sleeping on the horse. Starting in 2004, I was constantly giving management ideas about what we could do next to the Veyron, on its base, or after it. Most never saw the light of day," Achim Anscheidt, the soft-spoken head of Bugatti's design department, told me as we walked through the company's styling center. Bugatti Veyron Barchetta View 5 Photos With coachbuilders like Henri Binder, Park Ward, Kellner, and Figoni & Falaschi out of the picture, the task of creating a new body fell into Anscheidt's lap. While he experimented with many projects, one he shed light on is a barchetta-like open-top two-seater (shown above) based on the Veyron Grand Sport. It featured the short, boat-like wraparound windshield that has historically characterized the body style, though "it could have been done as a roadster with a conventional windshield." Its proportions are recognizably Veyron-like, but the similarities end there. Its front end wears a vertical lights and bigger grille flanked by wide air intakes, styling cues later seen on the Divo. If built, the Veyron Barchetta would have arrived as a limited-edition model with a correspondingly high price tag, in part to offset the sky-high development costs. But as Lamborghini chalked up hit after hit, including the Sesto Elemento introduced at the 2010 Paris show, Bugatti's top executives were reluctant to adopt this business model. "They couldn't give themselves the push to make it happen," Anscheidt said with a tinge of regret.

Bugatti looking to make elongated electric luxury car

Mon, Mar 18 2019

Bugatti has been a one-trick pony for awhile now, but that could be changing in a few years. Car reports that the French supercar maker is working on an electric luxury car, due in 2023. The report claims Bugatti will use an elongated version of the platform Porsche is building the Taycan on. Plenty of changes would be made to make it worthy of the Bugatti name — adding copious amounts of carbon fiber and other lightweight exotic materials wouldn't be out of the question, since Bugatti doesn't have to worry about a price point like Porsche does. It also needs to differentiate itself considerably from others under the Volkswagen umbrella to be taken seriously. Car posits that this luxury barge could bring back the Royale name from the early twentieth century. Solid-state battery tech is not ready for production cars yet, but it's speculated that we could see the tech used as replacement for lithium-ion in this car. With no definitive timeline for solid state battery deployment, we'll maintain a healthy level of skepticism for now. Bugatti CEO Stephan Winkelmann spoke of the potential luxury car to Bloomberg at the Geneva Motor Show, too. He claimed the battery-electric car would be more affordable than the brand's usual fare. "There, I would see us doing a battery electric vehicle," Winkelmann said. "There, the balance between performance and comfort is much more important, and it's about daily usability. This is what I see." We don't see Bugatti axing the Chiron and whatever will replace it sometime down the line, so this next car will mean the brand would finally have two concurrent model offerings. Winkelman said the company's priorities for its future cars are changing, with top speed being much lower on the list of priorities, as well. "In Bugatti's future, maximum speed does not play the leading role any more," Winkelmann said. "From now on, we are going to put an emphasis on ultimate overall vehicle dynamics, lightweight and modern sustainable luxury." We've no doubt Bugatti will be able to find homes for nearly anything it produces. Bugatti told Bloomberg that the average Bugatti customer has 42(!) cars parked in the garages of what we can assume are various homes all around the world. Why should those folks have to commute in a stuffy old Rolls-Royce when they could be in a Bugatti?

Bugatti previews enigmatic new car ahead of Monterey debut

Tue, Aug 16 2022

Bugatti will travel to The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering, with a surprise up its sleeve. The French company released a short video that previews a mysterious new model on its social media channels, but the 12-second teaser film asks more questions than it answers. Let's start with what we see: The video zooms in on four horizontal LED strips that look like they're either a headlight or part of one. If we're indeed looking at a headlight, the new model seemingly steers clear of borrowing styling cues from the Chiron, which wears horizontal units. Deciphering the various hashtags isn't much help. Bugatti titled the video "Unlock an Icon" and hinted that it's "#OpeningUpNewHorizons." UNLOCK AN ICON 19 AUGUST 2022 | 10:20 PST (17:20 GMT) THE QUAIL, A MOTORSPORTS GATHERING#BUGATTI #MontereyCarWeek #TheQuail@TheQuailEvents pic.twitter.com/NP0v0AF2CS — Bugatti (@Bugatti) August 15, 2022 As for the rest, well ... your guess is as good as ours. Whatever we're looking at, it will be the first new Bugatti model since Croatia-based Rimac took over the brand in June 2021. Company founder Mate Rimac stressed that Bugatti won't immediately drop piston-powered cars, and he also argued against lazily taking the electric Nevera and putting a Bugatti logo on it. Bugatti announced in January 2022 that the Chiron is sold out, though the W16-powered coupe remains in production, so the car depicted in the preview video likely isn't another variant of it (like, say, the Super Sport). All of our questions will be answered when the next addition to the Bugatti family makes its debut at 10:20 a.m. PDT this Friday, August 19, in Monterey, California. That's 1:20 p.m. in New York City and 7:20 p.m. in Bugatti's hometown of Molsheim, France. Bugatti Luxury Performance
