2007 Bmw Z4 M Coupe -- Supercharged (500hp), Over $20k In Upgrades! on 2040-cars
Redwood City, California, United States
The car has 51,000 miles and a long life ahead of it. There are a few isolated cosmetic damages; the previous owner scuffed the front right of the bumper on a curb, but it is now better-protected by metal skid plates I installed on the bottom of the bumper. The paint is in good condition--no dents or major scratches aside from the bumper--though there are minor imperfections. The interior is in great condition overall, especially the leather throughout, except for some scratches on the driver's side door sill. I have always driven and treated the car with great care for its longevity: minimal engine load until both oil and coolant are fully warmed up (which takes longer with this car than many), carefully avoid potholes and rough roads, used a sun shade when parked to avoid UV damage to the interior, personally cleaned and conditioned the leather, etc etc... The car drives incredibly. Even before modifications, this was one of BMW's fastest and lightest production cars. With the stage-2 supercharger kit, it attains supercar-like performance and high overall refinement for an unbelievable value (at least now that I've spent the money and time tuning the supercharger for you!). Maintenance is completely up to date with a full records history--most importantly, the expensive Inspection II service has been recently performed, which includes a painstaking manual valve adjustment. I personally found the best BMW dealer tech on the peninsula and gave him a cash tip to ensure his work during this important job was of utmost quality. If you buy a lower-milage Z4 M, you'll be looking at well over $2,000 in the near future for this service. Test drives can only be offered to serious buyers. This car is extremely powerful, and while safe and capable (side air bags, stability & traction control, astounding brakes), it needs to be treated with respect. Headline features / improvements: - ESS VT2-500 Supercharger Kit--"stage 2", including a large and extremely effective intercooler. Rated 500 BHP and dyno-tested at corresponding RWHP. Cost over $15,000 with professional installation, testing, and tuning. - High-tech digital gauge system integrated behind the rear-view mirror glass. Invisible with the car off, seen as an overlay on the image in the mirror when the car is running. Air/Fuel ratio and Boost gauges are present on the left and right, as is a GPS-assisted Radar/Laser/Red Light Camera detector. Over $3,500 to purchase and install. I am going to miss this on my new car! This is a really unique feature, but I don't have photos right now (check out radar-mirror.com) - BMW European exhaust manifold. improves performance beyond the standard supercharger kit, and produces a stunning exhaust note. Carefully installed personally (an entire day's work). Over $1,000 in parts. - LoJack Vehicle Recovery system. - Adjustable camber plates in front and lower suspension arms in the rear from the best suspension part manufacturers available for the Z4M. - Full set of expanded-width Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires (considered by many to be the best performance tires available). Plenty of tread left (more than 50%). - Brand new front brakes, less than 1,000 miles on them. The front brakes are about 4x more expensive than the rear, and lasted the whole life of the car, so they will not have to be redone until after 100,000 miles. - High quality window tint on the side and rear glass (no bubbles, looks stock but keeps the heat out! - Numerous dealership-installed replacements, including a new VANOS system (!!! normally $5k+ replacement and the major problem area with factory S54), BMW OEM windshield (original cracked by a rock), navigation system screen, interior trim pieces, and shift knob. - Extensive, detailed service history and full original manual (leather binder). - Tons of extras like BMW perfect-fit sun visor, touch up paint (haven't needed to use it yet), short shift kit, new set of spark plugs (though the currently installed ones will last at least 30k more), the original intake parts from before the supercharger and original US exhaust headers, etc. - Bavarian Soundwerks Speaker Upgrade - Navigation system with Bluetooth connectivity (part of the premium package) - Frequent changes of all fluids, including half the factory required milage on engine oil; supercharger oil, differential and transmission oil, brake fluid. Always top-tier fuel manufacturers. - Much, much more! More details on the powertrain and driving characteristics: - Supercharger is a centrifugal type, basically a belt-and-gear-driven turbocharger compressor wheel. Maximum boost is about 7-8PSI, which builds roughly linearly throughout the RPM band. - In addition to a large intercooler, the oil cooler is tripled in size and keeps oil temperatures slightly lower than stock, even under load. - The S54 motor is a 3.2L inline-6 with a 7,800RPM redline; at the time of its launch it had the highest naturally aspirated output per liter (333HP from 3.2L) of any BMW engine in history, and remains one of very few engines to break 100HP / Liter without forced induction. - The motor's natural tendency to make the greatest power at higher RPM combines with the centrifugal supercharger's own boost profile to produce a truly exceptional surge of power from 5,000RPM-7,500RPM. - S54's have individual throttle valves directly in front of the intake valves for each cylinder, which provides amazing throttle response. Combined with the always-on supercharger that has boost at the ready while driving, at 2,000RPM or above the response is absolutely immediate. BMW details cheaper, sub-M performance cars for young 'brand ambassadors'
Tue, 11 Feb 2014BMW's M cars are undoubtedly some of the best sport sedans in the world. Unfortunately, their prices put them out of the reach of a huge segment of buyers, many of them young. However, that might change in the near future as BMW launches its M Performance Automobiles performance sub-brand, positioned between its standard cars and the full M models.
Traditionally, M car buyers have been male and in their early-40s, according to Oliver Ganser, product strategy manager for BMW North America, speaking to Automotive News. However with MPA, BMW hopes to find even younger buyers "who will be brand ambassadors and appeal to the real enthusiasts that we have," he said. These new MPA models will see a mild boost in power and handling from off-the-shelf parts, instead of the unique engines and cutting-edge tech from their bigger M brothers.
The M Performance Automobiles line was launched last March at the Geneva Motor Show with high-performance diesel models of the 5 Series, X5 and X6. The first of the MPA models coming Stateside, the M235i, launches in March. We liked it when we drove it in January, but the $44,000 base price is still a bit steep. If it proves to be a success, we will see more of them, and if not, then it'll go down as another failed experiment, like the 318ti hatchback.
BMW i3s traction control tech going in all BMW, Mini cars
Wed, Jan 3 2018The BMW i3s is essentially a warmed-up version of the i3 electric car we all know and love. The performance boost isn't huge — just 14 horsepower and 15 pound-feet of torque — but it also gets a new suspension, wheels and tires as well as an improved traction control system. We found the car to benefit from all the updates when we drove it for our First Drive Review, but now BMW has offered up more details on just how the traction control system of the i3s helps make it better to drive. The company says it'll expand the technology to all future BMW and Mini models as well. The i3s's system is calibrated to help it to pull away quickly from a stop, making full use of the instantaneous torque offered by the electric motor. It also improves stability when accelerating out of corners, when using regenerative braking and, of course, when the road conditions are less than ideal. The results are palpable, and with the other improvements the i3s definitely feels stronger off the line, as we found on our drive. It's also about a half-second quicker to 60 miles per hour, at 6.8 seconds. The secret is in the response time of the stability control, which BMW claims is 50 times faster than the conventional system. This is made possible by moving the control process into the powertrain itself, rather than a remote unit. This reduces the signal path and, thus, the response time of the traction control system. BMW's Head of Chassis Development, Peter Langen, said of it, "With their high levels of torque and instantaneous responses to every movement of the accelerator, electric motors already make significantly higher demands on driving stability systems than conventional power units." While engineered to make the most of the electric motor, BMW says the shorter cycles of this traction control system show promise for internal combustion vehicles as well. As such, we'll begin to see the improved technology applied across the BMW and Mini lineups going forward. Related Video:
Jaguar Land Rover to drop supercharged V8 for turbocharged BMW power
Wed, Jul 27 2016There are few things that sound as good as Jaguar's 5.0 liter supercharged V8. As great as it is when the supercharger whines or the exhaust cracks and pops on throttle lift-off as the air pressure equalizes, the basic design dates back to the '90s. Plainly, the engine isn't as efficient as it needs to be, but designing a new V8 from the ground up is an expensive proposition. Instead, Automobile reports that Jaguar Land Rover is set to use a twin-turbocharged V8s supplied by BMW. Scalable architecture is all the rage as automakers streamline designs in order to save costs. For example, Jaguar's current supercharged V6 is quite literally a V8 with two holes missing. They didn't even change the length of the block. It seems both of those designs are on their way out, with the V6 being replaced by a inline-six closely related to the company's inline four. It seems that rather than designing an new and expensive V8 for their top of the line models JLR, is sourcing from BMW. From 1994 to 2000, BMW owned Land Rover. A few models, including the Land Rover Range Rover, used BMW engines then and in the initial years of Ford's JLR stewardship. It seems things have now come full circle. BMW currently makes a twin-turbo 4.4 liter V8 that produces anywhere from 440 to 600 horsepower, depending on the application. Automobile says that a new 4.0 liter V8 is in the works and that it will most likely be the engine that JLR uses. Expect it to be more powerful, more fuel efficient, and lighter than what both BMW and JLR currently offer. This seems like a win for both companies. BMW gets to offset the cost of a new motor while JLR, a smaller company, doesn't have to invest in a whole new architecture. As automakers search for ways to cut costs, expect collaborations like this to continue. Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz both share a four-cylinder engine. Ford and GM have worked together to design a shared 10-speed automatic. While we may lament the loss of that wonderful Jaguar Land Rover engine, we can still be happy that they haven't abandoned the V8.
