2002 Bmw X5 3.0i Sport Utility 4-door 3.0l Premium, Nav, Heated Seats, Clean on 2040-cars
San Jose, California, United States
One owner (leased and then purchased), California car, Well maintained throughout its life.
This is one car that just would not die --- My wife took it from new to 160K miles and just got tired of this car. Purchased a new X5 in 2011. Kept it as 3rd car, but I just got a new BMW too, so this became a 4th car that we no longer need. The car has original engine and transmission and never had trouble in both. Car takes about 1 quart oil in between oil changes (always have used synthetic) that BMW service indicator tells -- usually around 10K~12K miles. The automatic transmission shifts no different than when it was new -- no gear shifting up or down issues. Always passed California Smog test with no issues. New Continental all-season tires with around 4000 miles on them. Always maintained properly and used OEM replacement parts by my mechanic. Recent (3 yrs) major repair/maintenance noted below. It should be self-evident that this car has been well maintained/repaired promptly. 2014-02 (191K miles) New Tires, Heater/AC blower motor resistor replaced. Oxygen Sensor replaced. 2013-12 (189K miles) Fuel gauge sending unit replaced. Front-end Tension Strut, ball-joints, etc, replaced (about time/miles to do this). 2011-01 (176K miles) Radiator reserve tank replaced. Washer pump replaced. Battery replaced. 2011-01 (176K miles) Transfer Case Assembly ("drive train") replaced w/ new OEM parts (over $4K - only major mechanical repair) 2010-04 (155K miles) New brake pad, rotors, etc. Note: All four power window failed (not motors, but plastic mechanical parts, a common problem, and has been all repaired/replaced -1st one around 50K miles, and last one around 130K miles). Now for the condition of the car. All the functions, every indicator lamp, control, etc, work on this car -- every flaw that is known to me is listed below (after the options). The paint is in just amazing shape -- the car was NOT waxed before pictures were taken -- the shine indicates the original clear-coat (over metallic green-grey color) still in great shape and not oxidized. AC/Heat works really well -- no different since new. Spare tire is full size, all OEM included tools intact (never used), Two key/remotes (one well used but fully functional and one like-new), one service key plus a plastic key, and owners manual in the glove compartment. Bluetooth hands-free (Motorola T505 aftermarket) will be included and left in the car. This car has full option (premium, cold-weather, etc), minus sports package. That means, - Navigation (factory, and western USA map included) - Leather and wood trim. - Rear privacy tinted (factory) windows, and window shade (factory) - Rear seat, split 60/40 and power reclining on each part. - Heated Seats (two front) and six way power seats, and head-lamp power washer jets - HID head lamps. And the standard features for BMW X5 2002 could be had through searching internet. Cars.com has a good summary, but there are others. List of Flaws - Paint scrapes on front bumper -- both sides (pictured) - Center armrest -- odd but only this armrest leather surface is visibly worn. - Center armrest -- there are two storage area, main, and "cell phone" area. the latch open for the "cell phone" area is stuck open -- and is held by removable putty -- thought about just super-gluing this latch shut but did not. You could. - Small tear on door panel (pictured) - One of the park-distance sensor on the rear bumper is held (completely secure and tight, but...) by wire (pictured) - A few visible "parking lot" dings - no damage to paint but visible. - Navigation LCD screen has developed display "dead" region on lower right side, about and less than 0.5" by 1" area (pictured) at about 130K miles. Further expansion of this LCD screen "dead" area has not expanded in recent years. - Back of the driver's seat "magazine"pocket is a bit stretched out (pictured). The other magazine pocket is not. - Trunk mounted 6 CD changer removable cartridge has a stuck CD -- probably repairable but not functional, but sold AS-IS. - Car had low-speed accident w/ damage to the rear at around 30K miles -- bumper and rear panels replaced/repaired by new parts. - The trunk/rear window is not original OEM -- was broken into at around 160K miles, and replaced with non OEM glass (i.e. same part and spec, but no BMW logo found on this glass, BTW, rear defroster works fine as expected). Note: Turtle sticker on the trunk window is on the outside and removable by peeling it off. Note: Noticed that the Autocheck reports 1st accident (low speed rear damage) correctly, but 2nd accident listed for 2014-04 is in error. There was no incident/accident on this car (my wife's X5 -2011 model did have a minor accident at that time under the same insurance company). |

Recharge Wrap-up: BMW i3 Super Bowl ad, Tesla updates backup camera
Sat, Jan 17 2015For the fourth year in a row, fuel economy is the biggest factor in buying a new vehicle. A new report from JD Power and Associates found that, despite cheaper gas, customers still sought out fuel-sipping cars. 14 percent of survey responders cited mileage as the biggest concern when shopping for a new car, and the second most important reason to reject a vehicle. The biggest deal-breaker, though, when it comes to buying a new car is much more superficial: 30 percent of shoppers cite appearance as the main reason to avoid buying a particular vehicle. Read more at Automotive News, or in the press release below. Tesla's 6.1 Firmware update for the Model S makes maneuvering the car in reverse a bit easier. The update includes reverse guiding lines for the rear-view camera when backing up. Combined with the parking sensors, the new lines in the display make it easier to place the car into parking spots by showing where the car will be positioned based on the angle of the steering wheel. Two white lines curve with the steering to show where the car is going. Check it out in the video below or read more at Teslarati. BMW will air a new ad for the i3 during Super Bowl XLIX. The 60-second commercial will play during the first quarter of the game on Sunday, February 1. BMW didn't give the whole idea behind the TV spot away, but did hint at the concept behind the ad. "Big ideas like the BMW i3 take a little getting used to, and the creative idea surrounding our spot will play on this analogy," says BMW's Trudy Hardy. Despite Cheap Gas, Fuel Efficiency Still a Primary Concern Exterior Look/Design Top Reason Buyers Don't Even Consider a Vehicle WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.: 14 January 2015 - Despite gas prices falling to their lowest levels since 2010, fuel economy-for a fourth consecutive year-remains the most influential factor among the majority of new-vehicle buyers in determining which vehicle they select, according to the J.D. Power 2015 U.S. Avoider StudySM released today. The study, now in its 12th year, examines the reasons consumers purchase, reject or do not consider-or avoid-particular models when shopping for a new vehicle. According to the study, 14 percent of new-vehicle owners cite gas mileage as the most influential reason for selecting the vehicle they ultimately purchased. At the segment level, gas mileage is the primary purchase reason among buyers of compact, small and midsize cars and compact MPVs.
Recharge Wrap-up: BMW plans for retired batteries; automakers support dual-standard chargers
Sun, Feb 1 2015Toyota will test hybrids with silicon-carbide (SiC) power semiconductors. In Japan, Toyota has put the SiC power semiconductors into the power control units of a Camry Hybrid prototype and a fuel cell bus for a year-long test. Research suggests the SiC units will decrease electrical losses while managing power supply, thus improving overall powertrain efficiency. Current power semiconductors account for about 20 percent of electrical losses, and success with these tests could mean more efficient hybrids on the roads in the future. Read more at Hybrid Cars. Automakers from CCS and CHAdeMO camps are supporting dual-standard charging station networks. https://www.autoblog.com/bmw/, Volkswagen (CCS camp) and ChargePoint announced plans to build "express charging corridors" by installing about 100 DC fast chargers, many of which will support both types of charging. Kansas City Power & Light is partnering with Nissan (CHAdeMO camp) and ChargePoint to install DC chargers that "will charge any model of electric vehicle on the market." This leads the folks at Green Car Reports to look into whether this ends the looming standard war between automakers in the US. Read more at Green Car Reports. BMW, Bosch and utility company Vattenfall are making plans for a second life for retired BMW i3 batteries. The Second Life Batteries Alliance project will recycle the old lithium ion battery packs - which can still hold a charge - in off-grid storage and grid-stabilization applications, beginning with a grid storage system in Hamburg, Germany. Bosch has created a battery management algorithm to extend the life of the batteries and make sure they don't cause harm to Vattenfall's facilities. Read more at Transport Evolved.
Alpina bringing new B4 Bi-Turbo Cabrio to Geneva
Mon, 24 Feb 2014Interested in picking up a new BMW 4 Series with a turbo six? You've got options: you can get the 435i with 300 horsepower or spring for the M4 with 425 hp. But if it's the convertible model you want, we're afraid you'll be limited to the latter as the M division can't help you (at least not for the time being). But that's where Alpina comes in.
The aftermarket tuner closely associated with BMW offers the B4 Bi-Turbo (at least in Europe) with that same 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six massaged up to 410 horsepower that starts to pose a threat to the M4. What's more is that the Alpina's 442 pound-feet of torque eclipses the M4's 406 lb-ft, to say nothing of the 435i's 300.
Best of all, Alpina just confirmed via Facebook that it'll offer the B4 in convertible form, bringing the resulting BMW Alpina B4 Bi-Turbo Cabrio to the Geneva Motor Show. We'd expect the weight penalty to knock it slightly off the coupe's quoted 4.1-second 0-60 time, but not by much. If only BMW were to bring this one Stateside like it does with the B7 sedan.
