New Bristol sports car will be called the Bullet

One of the great names in British carmaking history, Bristol, is coming back with a new sports car. It was first seen all camouflaged up at the Goodwood Festival of Speed just weeks ago, and now Bristol has announced the name the upcoming car will bear – Bullet. The concept name is Project Pinnacle, and to propel the vehicle, Bristol has chosen a 4.8-liter BMW V8. Power figures have not yet been revealed, but it is likely those will be disclosed at the car's official unveiling at the end of this month. It's been five years since Bristol last produced a car, the Fighter, which ceased to be in 2011. There never were that many Fighters produced – sources say only 13 cars made it off the production line. There were also plans to build a turbocharged version of the Fighter, but that never materialized; however, as the BMW V8 in the upcoming Bullet is a naturally aspirated unit, Bristol has said it will be the last non-turbo engine in a Bristol. The use of a BMW engine also neatly ties in with the first Bristol made, as the 1947 Bristol 400 used a BMW 328 powerplant. Some earlier Bristols have been crafted from aluminum, and the Bullet will be a step in a new direction, as the chassis is going to be carbon fiber. The carmaker told Autocar that the Bullet will be made available during the first quarter of next year. BMW i3 REx can be hacked to offer more miles, AM radio

If you're a BMW i3 REx owner who's willing to risk voiding your warranty, there's a low-level hack that offers up an interesting question. Which is worth more, an extra 20 miles or so of range from the gas-powered range extender or the ability to listen to local sports, like, for example, the iconic Vin Scully on Los Angeles Dodger broadcasts? The choice might be easy for Dodger fans, but it could be a bit more challenging anyone ready to make a road trip. The i3 REx is considered a zero-emissions vehicle under the odd rules from the California Air Resources Board (an important category for automakers) because the miles provided by the gas-powered range extender are about equal to the single-charge range of the vehicle's battery, Green Car Reports says. Some enterprising folks have figured out how to modify the software to tweak the car's capabilities. That means that instead of being able to put in only 1.9 gallons of fuel at a time into the tank, you can put in 2.4 gallons, allowing for that extra 20 miles of driving range. Additionally, the i3 REx's software suppresses AM radio because of potential electromagnetic interference from the electric drivetrain. But, again, that can be reversed with a few tweaks to the software. We need to give out a warning, though: messing with these sorts of software settings is a good way to void your warranty. So, if you're in LA and thinking about enjoying that Dodger (or, dare we say, Giant) broadcast and a few extra driving miles, make sure to figure in all of the factors. 2014 BMW 2 Series earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+ [w/video]

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has just certified its latest Top Safety Pick+, honoring the all-new BMW 2 Series with the coveted rating.
IIHS cited the 2 Series' crash test ratings, which were rated as "Good" in the small overlap, moderate overlap, side and rollover. In the tricky small overlap test, the crash test dummy was at a "low risk of any significant injury."
The Institute was also complimentary of the 2 Series' head restraint system and its collision prevention system, including forward collision warning and City Braking.
