1997 BMW M3 Track Race Car

VIN: WBSBG9329VEY74145

Arctic Silver Metallic; 5-speed Manual; 3.2-liter (S50) Inline-6 with 300+ hp; NASA GTS3 and BMW Prepared Class or Track/Race/DE Car; Title; Two-Owners; Tons of Upgrades: Two Sets of Wheels, Diff Cooler, Fall Line Custom Cage (2007), Cams, Headers, Cold Air Intake, Blanton 3.64 diff, Wilwood Brakes, OBD I ECU, Two Racetech Seats (new in 2011, one barely used), JRZ Suspension, Double-Adjustable Shocks, Racing Dynamics Strut Brace, Dual Fuel Pumps, Lightweight Flywheel/Heavy Duty Clutch, and Much More; Professionally Maintained.

This 1997 BMW M3 (E36) was delivered new in Dallas, Texas in November of 1996 with 42 miles on the odometer. That original owner sold the car to the second owner in October of 1998 (when the car had 14,807 miles). That second owner originally used the M3 as a road car. He then developed the car extensively for racing/track days in 2007 with around 86,000 miles. The M3 has all original body panels and it is in very good condition. Both owners took excellent care of this M3 and it has been maintained to a very high standard.

Included in the sale are two sets of wheels along with many race spares (new brake rotors, brake pads, service manual, wheel bearings, fuel pump, AIM data acquisition system with Smarty Cam) and a ton of original M3 parts (removed when the car was built for track use in 2007).

This M3 is fully sorted and is an excellent track, race, or DE car. It is not a pieced-together tuner car, it is developed and setup correctly. It is eligible for NASA GTS3 (very big bonus) and also for BMW Prepared Class. It weighs 2755 pounds. The engine develops 268 hp at the rear-wheels (300+ hp at the crank). The engine is an S50 out of a Z3M (20,000 miles on engine when it was built around 2007). The engine has 8000 miles on it since being built. New Racetech seats, a cool suit, and a new Optima battery were installed last year and have little use. The M3 only has a couple of track weekends over the past two-years and offers an inexpensive option for a buyer compared to building their own car from scratch.

Fore! Pro golfers race BMW i8 against a golf cart

Sat, Jun 28 2014

You wouldn't think a couple of pro golfers racing a golf cart along a nice green course would get the blood pumping. But throw in a BMW i8 plug-in hybrid and things get at least a little more interesting. At least, that's what the German automaker is hoping for. Bimmer is swinging big with a cross-promotional video featuring two pairs of golfers racing plug-in vehicles at the 2014 BMW International Open golf tournament in Koln, Germany. Two of the golfers take your run-of-the-mill golf cart while the other two take a slightly more powerful BMW i8, with the goal to get to the course's "halfway house" first. The race, among other things, sends jackrabbits scurrying and shows off the i8's really cool doors and racy styling. The odd part – "spoiler" alert – is that the golf cart wins the race by taking a short cut through the course despite the fact that the i8 pairs a 231-horsepower turbocharged engine with a 131-horsepower electric motor. It's probably not exactly the message of high-speed performance BMW wants to convey but it would raise eyebrows if this weren't all a silly stunt. Check out the three-minute video below and then read our i8 First Drive impressions here.

Why won't automakers slap on a turbo badge anymore?

Thu, Sep 10 2015

Where have all the turbos gone? Not the actual pieces that go in the engine, mind you, those are everywhere these days as automakers downsize cylinder counts and boost efficiency and CO2 claims. But the turbo badges and fanfare are missing. Back when turbos were something to get excited about there was "turbo-driven," "turbonium," and "The Turbo Zone," among other silly lines. But now that basically every car is getting some sort of boost even on the lowliest trims, automakers are almost sliding in the turbos under the radar. Or if you look at some of the nomenclature, pretending they don't exist at all. The 911 Turbo badge shows where the car goes from being sane to lunatic. It's an important border. The latest automaker to hide that it has boosted the turbo presence is Porsche with the 2017 911 lineup. Even the standard Carrera models now get turbocharged flat-six engines, meaning the 911 Turbo models aren't quite as special as they once were. Porsche is in a sticky situation with this. The 911 Turbo, after all, signifies where the 911 family takes off from being a sports car and becomes the Ferrari fighter. The 911 Turbo badge shows where the car goes from being sane to lunatic. It's an important border, but now Porsche has crossed it and is trying to downplay the fact. There are a lot of exaggerations with displacement badges today, with claims the 2.0-liter turbo four in a Mercedes C Class equates to a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter six to make a C300. Volvo is pretty far up there, too, saying an XC90 T8 means V8 power, even though it's a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged four with electric assist. I don't know why BMW can't just call the car a 330i Turbo, rather than inflating the numbers up to 340i. Saab tried all of this back in the '90s when it decided to turbocharge its entire lineup, from light pressure units all the way up to models actually called "Saab 9-3 HOT" (for high-output turbo). But then the brand deleted any external reference to the turbo under the hood and people wondered why they were buying a $42,000 four-cylinder convertible. And that didn't turn out well. Even though these turbo replacements often make more power than their naturally aspirated predecessors, they're very different engines. People knew something changed when they exchanged their leased 328i with a 3.0-liter six for a 328i with a 2.0-liter turbo four.
