Autoblog Minute: Nokia to sell Here mapping for $3.1B

In a three company partnership the German automakers BMW, Audi and Daimler are set to take ownership of Nokia's Here mapping technology. Show full video transcript text [00:00:00] In a battle for Nokia's highly coveted mapping technology the auto industry claims victory over Silicon Valley. I'm Eddie Sabatini and this is your Autoblog Minute. In a three company partnership the German automakers BMW, Audi and Daimler are set to take ownership of Nokia's Here mapping technology. The Wall Street Journal writes that the automakers had concerns that the technology might fall under the [00:00:30]control of companies like Google, Uber, or Apple. The purchase, worth a reported 3.1 billion dollars, is still subject to antitrust evaluation before it's finalized; but this early news is already a big win for the German three. Ownership of Nokia's Here tech means that automakers won't lose control of the information systems that go into their cars. The deal, if approved, is expected to close in first quarter of 2016. 2014 BMW 6 Series gets Frozen Brilliant White convertible, manual option for M6

BMW has announced updates to the 6 Series lineup today, including a special "Frozen" edition of the convertible, and a 640i Gran Coupe in all-wheel-drive trim.
The 2014 BMW 6 Series Convertible Frozen Brilliant White Edition (catchy name, right?) will be available from select BMW dealers this May, and will offer buyers the signature paint, Frozen Black mirror caps, a black grille and uniquely designed, 20-inch M Performance wheels. Just 100 examples of the FBWE 6er will be produced, with both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive cars in the mix, for starting prices of $106,995 and $110,095, respectively (both prices include $895 in destination and handling charges).
BMW has also informed us that all of its 6 Series Gran Coupe models will now be available with the company's xDrive all-wheel-drive system. No pricing has been given for the xDrive versions of the car as of yet.

European jury picks finalists for 2015 Car of the Year

There are countless Car of the Year awards handed out each year, and naturally, Europe has its own way of doing things. Every year, a panel of jurists representing seven publications in seven different languages and seven different countries get together to name their joint Car of the Year. The panel released a list of 32 candidates back in July, and it has now whittled that list down to seven nominees. The list consists of the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, the Citroen C4 Cactus (shown), the Ford Mondeo, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the Nissan Qashqai, the Renault Twingo and the Volkswagen Passat. Of those seven, only two are available in the US – those being the Mondeo (sold Stateside as the Fusion) and the C-Class. The Passat is an entirely different model in North America, the Qashqai isn't offered here, Citroen and Renault don't even participate in our market and the BMW 2 Series is represented here only by the completely different coupe and convertible. Expect the one and only recipient of the 2015 Car of the Year award to be announced at the Geneva Motor Show this coming March, and while you're waiting, you can place your guesses for the eventual winner in Comments.
