DESCRIPTION

The M Roadster debuted as a fine-tuned version of the BMW Z3 Roadster that was designed to compete with sports cars like the Porsche Boxster. The M cars come with a standard 3.2-liter, DOHC six-cylinder engine that spouts 240 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm and makes 236 foot-pounds of torque, peaking @ 3,800 rpm. The engine is nestled into the front end of the car and utilizes rear-wheel drive with a limited slip differential, which helps to achieve stable cornering.

BMW's ZF type C five-speed manual transmission with direct fifth gear shifts into the right place like magic and makes for a perfect engine/transmission combination.

The M Roadster, with its more conservative, yet swoopy, styling. Open-air travel is always a pleasure, but few convertibles are as entertaining as the BMW M Roadster on a twisty two-lane or a flat stretch of deserted highway. A combination of refinement and performance, the roadster engine feels smooth, silky and strung. The roadster's cabin is comparable to that of the coupe, with the same dashboard setup and two-toned leather seats. Instead of the M Coupe's cargo area, you'll find two huge roll bars behind the roadster's two seats, as well as a mesh wind net that significantly quells wind buffeting.

Reaching 60 mph from zero in 5.3 seconds, the M Roadster blows away competition like the Porsche Boxster and Mercedes-Benz SLK in straight-line acceleration. The roadster's closest competitor, the Boxster, makes 201 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm and 181 foot-pounds of torque @ 4,500 rpm. Priced within two thousand dollars of each other, the Boxster and M Roadster are true rivals.

Reverse-engineering i3 shows BMW profits after 20,000 sales

"This is, without a question of a doubt, the most advanced vehicle on the planet. It's as revolutionary as the Model T was when it came out." That is exceptionally high praise, and it's not even being heaped on one of the million-dollar hybrid hypercars from Ferrari or McLaren. It's not even being attributed to a particularly zealous Tesla fan. Nope, it's coming from a mustachioed man in suburban Detroit, and he's discussing a $42,400 BMW hatchback with Forbes. Of course, said hatchback is the revolutionary i3, and Sandy Munro's statements carry some degree of authority, as his company is tearing apart and analyzing every little nut, washer and bolt on the four-seat EV. Munro's eponymous company performs reverse-engineering analysis, meaning they rip apart brand new cars and sell the information to the world's automakers, saving OEM's both time and money. The most interesting thing it has discovered thus far? That even with the high costs of two of the i3's most important elements – carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic and lithium-ion batteries Â– his company's analysis shows that BMW need only sell about 20,000 units a year to turn a profit, Forbes reports. While Munro's company is often contracted by automakers, he's gone it alone on the i3 project, dropping about $1 million into in-depth analysis. That's a lot of money, but the company should be able to turn around and sell its findings for about $500,000, with a batch of Chinese automakers already queued up and ready to buy. Analysis of individual i3 components will also be available from a sort of a la carte menu. Watch the BMW i8 get wrung out on the Ring

Been wondering where the heck the reviews of the all-new, plug-in-hybrid BMW i8 have been? After all, the car isn't exactly new, having debuted in concept form way back in September of 2009. In August of last year, we even tested a prototype of the new supercar. Despite that, though, we still haven't gotten a crack at the actual vehicle that will be sold to the public.
Well, we're happy to tell you that we're currently testing the i8 and will have a proper review for you soon. If, however, you're just aching for some coverage of the low-slung plug-in, we have a short video of it in action around Germany's famed Nürburgring.
Despite it's three-cylinder, turbocharged gas engine, the i8 sounds pretty angry as it laps the Ring. That is, until it has a little bit of a breakdown. According to the guys that caught the car on video, it appeared the i8 had a minor brake issue, and was parked on the side of the track for a good 15 minutes, with the driver pumping the brakes. We should probably just take this as proof, then, that manufacturers are actually using the Ring for testing, and not just messing about.
