In the 8 1/2 years I have owned the car, I have logged less than 20K miles (less than 2,500 miles/year). The car was repainted 12 years ago and has some chips, scratches, and one parking lot ding on the PS door. The AC was converted to the new R134a refrigerant and a new receiver/dryer. It blows cold but there also seems to be warm air entering from somewhere under the dash that I haven't figured out yet. It has antique plates on it now but is not driven enough to warrant keeping it. It should be driven more regularly."

The major receipts from the previous owner and myself begin with a $6K repaint & restripe plus gasket and seal replacements. Other major repairs and upgrades: new front leather seats, $800; installation of front spoiler and fog lights, $1,859; new muffler and exhaust parts, $499; new front & rear suspension, Dinan performance engine chip & tuneup, blower motor, many switches, sensors, hoses, filters, gaskets, $3,800; heater blower motor and PW switch, $451; new brakes, 3 receipts for $1651 (prev owner, not me); new tires, 225/50VR16, $623; heater valve & shift handle, $200; new catalytic converter, O2 sensor, emissions test, & alignment, $1170; dvr's door latch & actuator, trunk lock rod assy & rod lock bushings of central locking system, $621; new JVC AM/FM/CD changer w/remote, Mdl# RM-RK300, ~$450; replace head, valve job, hoses, oil chg, $1,475; transmission shift sensor, $240; rebuild alternator, replace flywheel, ring gear, & starter, $1370; new ignition switch, $257; radiator & coolant sensor, $732; electrical repairs to transmission control unit and main ECU, $361. BMW to launch loaner program to avoid range anxiety on i models

Tue, 12 Mar 2013

BMW is looking to stave off electric vehicle range anxiety with a new program that offers buyers a free gasoline loaner with every i3 purchase. Ward's Auto reports BMW is confident that the EV will give buyers the kind of transportation they need for 90 percent of their trips. The loaners, meanwhile, will be available for those few occasions when drivers need to cover more ground than the machine's batteries will allow. The i3 gets around with help from a 180-horsepower electric motor paired with a lithium-ion battery pack.
The combo is good for trips of between 80 and 100 miles depending on driving habits and weather conditions, though BMW also plans to offer a model with a small two-cylinder range-extending gasoline engine as well. That option will likely set you back an additional $4,000. When the machine bows in 2014, it will likely come with a charge time of four to six hours when suckling from a 220-volt outlet.
As far as the conventionally powered loaner car goes, the cost of the program is included in the i3's purchase price, though BMW has yet to figure out how many free loans will be offered, or what happens after that threshold is reached.

2015 BMW X4 gets its small-screen debut

Thu, 26 Jun 2014

It's easy to dismiss the 2015 BMW X4. On one hand, the high-style crossover seems more like a boardroom decision than a practical one. In a world with the 3 Series, 4 Series, X3, 3 Series GT and 4 Series Gran Coupe, is BMW really being inundated with requests for a baby X6? Of course, when we finally got behind the wheel of the CUV for our First Drive, it proved rather entertaining, and certainly the X6's global sales success suggests that it's worth the relatively low-cost risk for the Bavarian automaker.
Now, it's the general public's chance to weigh in on the latest crossover Bimmer and vote with their dollars. The X4 is just hitting showrooms in the US, and BMW is beginning its marketing campaign for it with the slogan "Embrace the Unknown." The first TV ad shows off the CUV driving through the world's major cities as they undulate like the rolling ocean. A woman flatly says phrases starting with "Go," while a synth-heavy score plays underneath that wouldn't be out of place over the end credits in an '80s sci-fi movie.
Visually, it's actually kind of a cool ad and evokes some of the special effects from Inception. Focusing on an urban atmosphere is probably a good idea, too, because the percentage of X4s going offroad is likely to be in the low single digits, if that. Now, let's see if BMW buyers are willing to embrace the unknown of the X4. Scroll down to watch it for yourself.

A Tasty Bit Of Old School For The New School
Against the backdrop of fervent hand-wringing from brand purists, BMW is on the cusp of finally offering front-wheel-drive vehicles. While that's a shock to the constitution, many are pointing to the company's fine-handling Mini offerings as an article of faith that it can get this drivetrain paradigm shift right. That may be true, but there's an even more important lesson that Mini has taught the decision-makers in Munich: how to make real money on small cars.
Before Mini came along, BMW - along with seemingly every other premium European automaker - never really figured out how to coax big dollars out of American wallets without developing cars that had large footprints, at least those other than sports cars. While the automaker really got rolling in America on the strength of little bantamweights like the 2002, it veered away from small cars sometime in the '80s. BMW subsequently crashed and burned with the cut-and-shut 318ti built off its E36 3 Series and, good as it is, the 1 Series hasn't given the company meaty volume or profits, either. Among other brands, the Audi A3 has never rung up big numbers, and the less said about the painful sales figures of the Volvo C30, the better. But Mini has beat the odds, blazing a more affordable and evidently compelling trail. As of late, the company's Countryman softroader has been a massive hit worldwide. No surprise then that BMW has reconsidered bringing over its smallest softroader, the X1, to the US.
