Test Driver Ratings & Comments
Acceleration commentsNo matter how you launch it, the 550i GT is quick; however, we found the sweet spot in Sport Plus with DSC off and virtually no wheelspin. It took three attempts to "beat" Sport Plus with DSC on, however, so the sysem is well-calibrated.
Braking ratingExcellent
Braking commentsMedium-firm pedal with little idle stroke and virtually no fade until the fifth stop. How does BMW do this with single-piston calipers and a 4,800-pound vehicle?
Handling ratingGood
Handling commentsSkid pad: With DSC off, the GT tiptoes in understeer. Decent grip, and when Sport Plus mode is selected, the steering feels (more or less) linear and "normal." With DSC on and "Normal" mode selected, steering input (and effort) are decreased. DSC first applies brakes, then closes throttle to quell understeer. Slalom: In Normal mode with DSC on, the yaw response is incongruous with the minimal steering input. That said, the DSC is perhaps one of the best I've tested in that it makes the GT go EXACTLY where the steering tells it to go without the usual overcorrections or stumbling of other systems. With DSC off, the GT doesn't feel as massive as it truly is. Balance is remarkably neutral with slight understeer on the limit.

Are you the 2016 BMW M2?

Wed, 21 May 2014

From the looks of these spy shots, BMW is back testing the hotter version of the M235i, the M2. We first brought you pictures of the lightly disguised coupe a few weeks back. While those original shots were on the road, it would seem that BMW has transitioned its testing to the Nürburgring.
Here, we get a better look at the M2 prototype's M-spec wheels. This particular car is missing the traditional quadruple exhausts that serve as an easy identifier for BMW M products, although our spies report that the tips, along with a more assertive front fascia, will arrive when the M2 makes its production debut.
We can't yet confirm any powertrain details, but previous rumors had the M2 getting its go from a tuned version of the brand's N55 turbocharged inline-six. Take a look up top for this latest round of spy photos of the BMW M2.

BMW confirms M4 DTM for next season

Tue, 20 Aug 2013

Fans of BMW performance had two events to keep an eye on this weekend: the reveal of the M4 Concept at Pebble Beach, and the efforts of the Bavarian automaker's DTM teams at the Nurburgring. What ties them together, however, is what BMW has in store for next year.
The German carmaker has confirmed that it's already working on a new M4 DTM to campaign in the highly-competitive touring car series starting next season. It didn't reveal any details, but we can expect the M4 to make the same jump to competition spec as the M3 did before it. And with some success, we might add: successive versions of the M3 have won 48 DTM races over the years, starting with the checkered flag which Harald Grohs claimed at Hockenheim in 1987 through to the same race which Augusto Farfus won earlier this year. After taking home the title for BMW in its first year back in DTM last season, Bruno Spengler also won at the Red Bull Ring in Austria two months ago, but the Bimmer teams seem to be having a bit of trouble defending its title against fresh assaults from Audi and Mercedes.
BMW undoubtedly hopes the new M4 DTM will help it turn another new leaf, and we're looking forward to seeing how it all shapes up. Read more in the press release below.

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe spotted wearing minimal camo, M Sport pack

Mon, 14 Oct 2013

The new BMW 4 Series is essentially the coupe version of the latest 3 Series. So it would stand to reason that the four-door version of the 4 Series, in turn, would be the 3 Series - right? Well, yes and no.
Just as BMW offers both a 5 Series sedan and a four-door version of the 6 Series called the Gran Coupe, so, too, will its 4-Series family expand. So following the release of the new 4 Series Convertible, here we have the latest batch of spy shots showing the upcoming 4 Series Gran Coupe - which in turn should not be confused with the hunchbacked 3 Series Gran Turismo, which is more of a sporty wagon than a four-door coupe.
The nearly ready test vehicle pictured here is wearing only minimal camouflage to hide some last few details, but also appears to be wearing the M Sport package that will bridge the gap (at least, visually speaking) between the base models and the M4 Gran Coupe that is all but certain to follow.
