Up for auction is a BMW 5 series with all wheel drive and a rare manual transmission (no navigation). The car has a salvage title, with a few flaws that I will list, but otherwise the car is in very good condition. The vehicle currently has 54k miles and is rising gradually as it is my daily driver. First, the flaws:

- Minor scratches on the lower passenger rocker
- 2 scratches (4") on the rear passenger fender, but neither go through the primer
- Drivers seat warmer does not work. It has the well known electrical short issue and there is a hole that burned through the seat (not noticeable unless you are looking for it).
- Turbo Wastegate problems. When engaging/boosting the turbos for a long period of time at lower RPMs, the engine light will come on and the turbos will be disabled. The car will run fine but the turbos will not be active (it will perform like a 328 xi). I've driven it for hundreds of miles in this mode.  When the car is turned off, the engine light resets and all is back to normal. If you shift gears at higher RPMS (> 2500), the engine light will not come on. This is a well known problem on these engines and BMW has extended the warranty to 80k miles for these turbos. I took the to the BMW dealer and they attempted to submit the claim, but it was denied due to the salvage title.
- Vehicle does not have navigation

Items that have been replaced:

- New rear wheel bearings (both sides)
- New clutch
- New coolant hose on front turbo

Overall, the car is great with lots of power. If you want to have the turbos fixed by the dealer or if you want to fix them yourself or if you want to leave them as is, this is a very good car and you will not be disappointed.

The buyer of the car will need to get the vehicle inspected by your state of purchase and then the car will be issued a title with a salvage stamp. Alternatively, I could have the car inspected by the State of Minnesota prior to purchase, but it will only be valid during the Minnesota titling process. (ie. if the car is bought out of state, it will have to be re-inspected by that state).

I can arrange shipping so let me know if you would like a quote. Thank you for looking and let me know if questions.

Consumer Reports criticizes small turbo engines for misleading performance, fuel economy claims [w/video]

Tue, 05 Feb 2013

Consumer Reports has taken aim at at small-displacement, forced-induction engines, saying the powerplants don't manage to deliver on automaker fuel economy claims. Manufacturers have long held that smaller, turbocharged engines pack all power of their larger displacement cousins with significantly better fuel economy, but the research organization says that despite scoring high EPA economy numbers, the engines are no better than conventional drivetrains in both categories. Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing for Consumer Reports, says the forced induction options "are often slower and less fuel efficient than larger four and six-cylinder engines."
Specifically, CR calls out the new Ford Fusion equipped with the automaker's Ecoboost 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. The institute's researchers found the engine, which is a $795 option over the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder, fails to match competitors in acceleration and served up 25 miles per gallon in testing, putting the sedan dead last among other midsize options.
The Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Sonata Turbo and Ford Escape 2.0T all got dinged for the same troubles, though Consumer Reports has found the turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the BMW 328i does deliver on its promises. You can check out the full press release below. You can also read the full study on the Consumer Reports site, or scroll down for a short video recap.

Are you the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe?

Fri, 31 Jan 2014

Thanks to Austrian website Autofilou (via Jalopnik), we now have our first look at what appears to be the upcoming BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe - the four-door version of the new 4 Series coupe, which itself is based on the 3 Series sedan. Makes total sense, right?
Nevertheless, in our First Drive of the 4 Series coupe, we found it to be a much more engaging experience than the 3 Series on which its based. And if this new 4GC follows in those footsteps, it could prove to be a better 3 Series sedan than, well, the 3 Series sedan.
Expect the 4 Series Gran Coupe to come in 428i and 435i flavors, with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four in the base car and a 3.0-liter turbo-six in the higher-end model. Of course, BMW will likely bring a range-topping M4 Gran Coupe to market not long thereafter.

BMW 2 Series specs leaked?

Wed, 09 Oct 2013

Thanks to spy shots from earlier in the year, we already know what the new BMW 2 Series will look like, but now we know a lot more about the coupe courtesy of an apparent BMW South Africa error and some quick-clicking enthusiasts. Though the information no longer appears to be posted on BMW's South African website, 2addicts.com managed to grab most of the details for the new coupe, including the model lineup, specs and most (if not all) of the options list for the upcoming replacement for the 1 Series.
Just like the latest 3 Series, the 2 Series model lineup starts at the 220i powered by a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder, but the more exciting BMW figures to be the M235i with its 320-hp, 3.0-liter straight-six. With the automatic transmission, the info says that the M235i weights 3,240 pounds and will be able to accelerate from 0-62 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds - making it both lighter and quicker than the 135is currently offered in the US. The base 220i coupe should also be fun to drive with its 180 horsepower and sub-3,000 pound curb weight.
A quick side-by-side comparison of the dimensions for the base 220i with our current base 128i shows that the new coupe rides on a longer wheelbase (105.9 in. vs. 104.7 in.), is about two inches longer (174.4 in. vs. 172.2 in.) and is an inch wider (69.8 in. vs. 68.8 in.). 2addicts.com even shows available paint colors, interior trim options and lists pricing for South African-spec models. Head on over to the forum to check out all the info they have posted, but we expect the 2 Series to be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show early next year.
