BMW i8 recalled over possible fuel leak

Some 223 examples of the 2014 BMW i8, built between May 16, 2014 and September 16, 2014, are being recalled over a potential fuel leak. A bolt used to secure a ground cable from the chassis structure to the fuel tank could have been welded improperly; if so, gas might leak from the tank. The recall began in November, so if any of you owner types aren't aware by now, you can take your i8 to the dealer for replacement of the fuel tank if necessary. A bolt used to attach a ground cable between the tank and the vehicle chassis may not have been properly welded during manufacturing. CONSEQUENCE: An inadequate weld of the bolt to the fuel tank could cause a fuel leak. In the presence of an ignition source, a fuel leak could lead to a fire. REMEDY: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the fuel tank if necessary, free of charge. The recall began in November 2014. For the second straight year, the Top Ten Green Cars list from KBB (i.e. the acronym for Kelley Blue Book) should have been retitled KBBimmer. That's because the BMW i3 electric vehicle has topped KBB's list of greenest production vehicles for two years running. That means that having the lowest purchase price wasn't that big of a factor in determining the winner. KBB releases its list about this time of year every year in honor of Earth Day and this year not only praised the Bimmer for its performance and single-charge range, but also noted that its factory is powered by wind turbines, which gives the car and the company a few more treehugger points. Meanwhile, KBB didn't exactly surprise a ton of people by including models like the Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in (with a caveat that the next-generation version will be coming out next year), Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model S EVs and the Toyota Prius' four hybrid variants. Other somewhat lower-profile advanced-powertrain models to make the cut were the Honda Accord Hybrid, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Volkswagen e-Golf and Ford C-Max Hybrid. Rounding out the list was the Volkswagen Jetta TDI, the only diesel that KBB recommended as a Top Ten pick. BMW quietly revealed a 5 Series GT concept earlier this week at an event in France, and it sports a plug-in hybrid powertrain capable of a whopping 670 horsepower. Think the upcoming Model X crossover from Tesla sounds good? BMW has something that might be just as enticing for eco enthusiasts who like their cars to be green and mean. That's right, a hybrid BMW hatch-crossover with more estimated power than the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. BMW's setup is called "Power eDrive," and it uses a 20-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that provides juice for two electric motors; they work with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This 5 Series GT would be able to travel for 62 miles under electric power. The prototype shows the high-performance potential of the system, but the 5 Series GT is "purely a concept," BMW spokesman Julian Arguelles told Autoblog. The GT made its global debut alongside plug-in versions of the 3 Series and X5. They used more basic eDrive systems with one electric motor teamed with a turbo four cylinder. BMW revealed the prototypes to illustrate its plans to increase production of plug-in hybrids.
