2000 BMW 540i 6 speed manual - 127,158 miles.  Orient Blue Metallic paint with beige leather interior and poplar wood trim.  Price is discounted to reflect repair needed (details below).

This has been my daily driver the last 9 years, which I have enjoyed every day.  One of the best sports sedans every built. The factory sport suspension on big fat summer (or winter) tires makes the car stick in the corners with BMW balance.  It goes very fast without any drama.  The 6 speed manual transmission has all that torque on demand, all the time. The exhaust sounds great.  It's a car for people that want to enjoy driving.

M-sport (0337) and Sport (0ZSP) packages - (Suspension, 6 speed manual transmission, 12-way adjustable leather sport seats, special forged alloy wheels, and lots of M-badged trim).
Cold weather package (heated seats)
Factory Navigation.  Nav disk last updated in 2005, so a little out of date, but does work.
Premium factory 12 speaker stereo amp & stereo, 6 disc CD changer in trunk
17" forged BMW wheels with 8 month old Maxxis Victra Z4S tires (summer tires, Z speed rated 235 width front, 255 rear), good all around.  Included are an extra set of Blizzak snow tires with 2-3 years of tread left.
Then it has the standard fare from an $65,000 sport sedan - Traction Control, Stability Control, Automatic Climate Control, Rain Sensing Wipers, Xenon Headlamps, sunroof, factory alarm, 8 airbags, timed interior ventilation (nice feature).
BMW factory front spoiler (rare), and rear trunk lip spoiler.

Dinan Stage 1 software purchased at and installed by Motorwerks BMW in Minneapolis.  This upgraded peak horsepower/torque from factory 282/324 to 305/348.  More importantly, it changes WHEN the power comes on.  The car is MUCH livelier.  The torque curve is much improved at lower RPM's, and gas mileage remains around 18/29 MPG.  Also installed a Billy Boat Exhaust purchased from Barvarian Autosport (Bavauto.com).  This is an high-end "adult" exhaust designed specifically for the 540.  It gives a deep rich tone "thrum" from about 500rpm-1500rpm, (startup and slow speeds) and then is very quiet and civilized at speed.

Clean Title, no accidents.  I bought this CPO coming off a lease.  There is no rust anywhere.  The paint is still glossy and in excellent shape.    There are a few door dings, a couple small scratches, but otherwise a great exterior.  No rust on undercarriage.  The interior is clean, and all buttons and switch-work work as intended.  There is wear on the drivers seat leather side bolster, a dime size hole.  The LED information display below the speedometer is sometimes loses pixels. The problem comes and goes, some more visible than others.  You can see the problem on the odometer picture I have up. The sunroof also is starting to stick occasionally - the slide rails need an adjustment. Traction control and stability control work fine. Water pump, coolant overflow tank and cooling hoses replaced a year ago, a couple suspension components 4-5 years back (tie rods).  O2 Sensors replaced.  I have most receipts of repairs and upgrades.

The car runs well but needs a significant repair soon.  A plastic guide for the timing chain (or VANOS) broke off.  I noticed a different sound at idle in my garage, got it to my mechanic that day, and after digging in he determined a plastic guide for the timing chain had broke off leaving some play in the chain.  He said there has been no engine/valve damage, but I should probably fix this right away if I want to keep driving the car. The work to fix this is labor (not parts) intensive. So I'm selling it, time for something new.  The price here is discounted to reflect the repair.  I would be asking more otherwise.

Porsche 911 tops a list of must-have classics, but No. 2 is more of a surprise

Wed, Aug 9 2023

No surprise here: In Europe, the Porsche 911 is the most sought-after classic car. Surprise here: Slip-streaming the 911 in the most sought-after chart compiled by the Car & Classic marketplace is the Ford Mustang. Using the Google search engine as a means to pick the winners, as well as the average prices achieved on the “Car and Classic” website, the venerable 911 was tagged 1.45 million times per month according to data stretching back 15 years. The number of 911Â’s sold though the C&C marketplace was 21,141, at an average price of 58,409 pounds, or $74,300. FordÂ’s pony car, still a popular choice for buyers in Europe, placed second on the list with 1.2 million monthly searches. The average sales price over 15 years was 31,107 pounds ($39,570), and the number of older Mustangs sold reached a total of 8,332. Models that also finished among the charted top 10 include the Land Rover Range Rover, the Corvette, the ultra-classic British favorite Jaguar E-Type and the BMW 3 Series. “Whilst a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS could set you back the best part of GBP500,000 ($636,000), there are many more affordable models, which bring the average sale price of a 911 on Car & Classic to GBP58,000 ($73,800) – the third highest average selling price of any make and model on the site,” explained Dale Vinten of Car & Classic. According to the site, the Jaguar fetched the highest average selling price: a whopping 89,000 pounds, or $113,000. But thatÂ’s peanuts compared to a Series 1 Roadster in excellent condition, said Vinten. For that, “you can expect to spend up to GBP250,000 ($318,000), A Series 2 or 3 will cost less, as they are not as desirable, but in decent condition you can expect to pay around GBP40,000-GBP50,000. Even a barn find 1969 E-Type Series 2 Roadster can set you back to the tune of GBP33,000 ($42,000)." Launched in 2005, Car & Classic is among EuropeÂ’s most popular classic car clearinghouses. It also runs a stand-alone auction site.

Weekly Recap: Ferrari plans to gradually increase production by 2019

Sat, Oct 17 2015

Ferrari has long been known for the exclusivity of its performance machines. It's on a different level than Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes. But as it transitions to a new era of independence from Fiat Chrysler, Ferrari is going to get a little less exclusive. It's by design, and it means a subtle, slow ramp-up of production – a move Ferrari believes will ensure its future by meeting growing demand in new markets. The strategy was detailed in SEC documents filed this month as part of the company's pending stock offering. The files reveal Ferrari will gradually increase shipments to about 9,000 units per year by 2019. This is a reversal of Ferrari's 2013 plans to cap production at 7,000 cars annually, which it hit on the nose that year. Ferrari shipments inched up to 7,255 in 2014, though that's down from 2012's record tally of 7,405. Ferrari is a vastly different operation than it was in 2013. Longtime chairman Luca di Montezemolo stepped down last fall, and FCA chief executive Sergio Marchionne has been overseeing the company since then. Its IPO has attracted high levels of attention from enthusiasts and investors. As expected, demand has reportedly outstripped the availability of the stock, which has an estimated offering price of $48 to $52 a share. Speaking of more Ferraris, the company revealed a limited-edition model this week called the F12tdf (shown above). Based on the F12 Berlinetta, the car is a salute to the Tour de France endurance auto race that Ferrari dominated in the 1950s and '60s. The V12 engine's output increases to 769 horsepower, while weight is cut by 243 pounds – allowing for a sprint to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds. Dramatic carbon-fiber elements and a radical redesign of the body panels give the F12 a more dramatic look. It will be limited to 799 units over the life of the car. If this is how Ferrari is increasing production, we're more than okay with the company's new strategy. OTHER NEWS & NOTES Tesla software unlocks Autopilot features Tesla released the latest version of its software for the Model S this week, which allows the all-electric sedan to drive in a semi-autonomous state called Autopilot. Tesla Version 7.0 enables the Model S to maintain lane position, change lanes by touching the turn signal, and manage the car's speed using an advanced, traffic-sensing cruise control. It also has a parallel parking feature, which searches for open spots and then parks your Tesla.

BMW details Concept X5 eDrive ahead of New York debut

Sun, 13 Apr 2014

Already weighing more than most other types of vehicles and with the space to accommodate the extra equipment, crossovers and SUVs arguably make for one of the more ideal platforms to transform into a hybrid. And there have been a handful of them - like the Audi Q5, Infiniti QX60/Nissan Pathfinder, Porsche Cayenne/Volkswagen Touareg, Lexus RX450h/Toyota Highlander and Cadillac Escalade/Chevy Tahoe/GMC Yukon - but by and large the majority of hybrids on the market are sedans and hatchbacks. BMW, however, looks poised to join the minority with the X5.
The Bavarian automaker showcased the X5 eDrive concept at Frankfurt last year, and as promised, has now revealed the followup it will present at the New York Auto Show in just a few days. The new Concept X5 eDrive, as BMW has now revealed, pairs a 2.0-liter turbo four good for 245 horsepower to a 95-hp electric motor to deliver a combined 340 horsepower. Its lithium-ion battery can power it for up to 20 miles and at speeds up to 75 miles per hour before the gasoline engine needs to kick in. All that without sacrificing the vehicle's utility, maintaining an almost perfectly flat loading floor with 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats, and without sacrificing much on performance, either: with a 0-62 time of seven seconds flat, the X5 eDrive concept is quicker off the line than the production X5 with the 2.5-liter turbodiesel and just a tenth off of the 3.0-liter turbodiesel.
With the full technical details now released (you can delve into it all in the press release below), the only question remains when BMW will actually put the X5 eDrive into production. Given its appearance in New York, though, we gather that whenever it does reach showrooms, it'll reach American ones as well.
