Up for sale is a 1999 BMW 540iA Sport.
First, the good.
- This car is a lot of fun to drive. Since you're looking at this, you probably already know that.
- It corners like it is on rails and can stop on a dime. (see above)
- It is also a color that does not arise the suspicion of your local law enforcement.
- It comes with a manual, two keys, and a large pile of receipts for parts purchased and repairs done.
- I don't think the spare tire has ever been on the ground.
- The engine has about 60k miles on it, but we'll get to that in a minute.
- It also has heated seats, xenon headlights, and triptronic transmission.
- The instrument cluster was replaced in 2006, it has no burnt out pixels.
- The battery was replaced last year.
This car has a rebuilt title. I bought the car from a place that sells rebuildable cars. When I bought this, there was a hole through the engine. Normally an exploded engine does not make a salvage title. I have no idea why it was salvage. I've been all around the car and have seen no evidence of flood, fire, structural damage, etc. The engine that is in is fully cast-iron sleeved.
Now onto the not so good:
- The front wheels were peeling, so i had them stripped and powder coated. They are not the exact same color as the rear. See the pictures.
- The air bag light comes on when it is cold out.
- When you first start the car up and drive away, the shift into 3rd gear is a little weird, but it has been that way for several years and never caused me any problems. Most people do not notice it.
- The car has a very low idle when it is warmed up, and stalls sometimes. It always restarts, but this is quite aggravating. I understand that you can take it to the dealer and have the idle increased. The low idle problem seems to happen to some of these cars.
- There are two cylinders that have low compression, but only when warmed up. This may be causing the low idle problem.
- The car was in a fender bender last winter, so it has a new front bumper, repaired front fender, and a replaced headlight.
- The car leaks a little oil. It looks like it is coming from the rear main seal, but it is not. The valve cover gasket leaks a little and the oil runs down the back of the engine. I have replacement gaskets and I'll throw that in as well.
- The left rear suspension has a creak sometimes. I have the part to fix it as well.
- The tape deck does not work.
- The Navigation computer is missing the CD.
Please call my cell with questions or if you want to go for a test drive. 574-596-3601. The vehicle is also for sale locally, so I reserve the right to remove this listing at any time.

7 major automakers to build open EV charging network
Wed, Jul 26 2023A new joint venture established by BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz and Stellantis will build a new North American electric vehicle charging network on a scale designed to compete with Tesla's industry-benchmark Supercharger network. The 30,000-plus planned new chargers will accommodate both Tesla's almost-standard North American Charging System (NACS) and existing automakers' Combined Charging System (CCS) options, effectively guaranteeing compatibility with the vast majority of current and upcoming electric models — whether they're from one of the involved automakers or not. "With the generational investments in public charging being implemented on the Federal and State level, the joint venture will leverage public and private funds to accelerate the installation of high-powered charging for customers. The new charging stations will be accessible to all battery-powered electric vehicles from any automaker using Combined Charging System (CCS) or North American Charging Standard (NACS) and are expected to meet or exceed the spirit and requirements of the U.S. National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program." Critically, the automakers involved will have a say in how the charging tech is implemented, guaranteeing that the hardware will play nicely with each automaker's in-house charging systems. Hyundai and Kia, for example, were hesitant to jump on board the Tesla NACS bandwagon earlier this year over concerns that the Supercharger network is insufficient for powering the two automakers' 800-volt charging systems; similar tech is used by Volkswagen and Porsche. In addition to providing much-needed capacity and high-output charging for America's growing fleet of electric cars and trucks, the new network will integrate seamlessly with each automaker's in-app and in-vehicle features, rather than forcing customers to use third-party tools and payment systems, as is the case with some existing public charging infrastructure. "The functions and services of the network will allow for seamless integration with participating automakersÂ’ in-vehicle and in-app experiences, including reservations, intelligent route planning and navigation, payment applications, transparent energy management and more. In addition, the network will leverage Plug & Charge technology to further enhance the customer experience," the announcement said.
2015 BMW M4 Coupe ditches some doors, gains some grunt
Mon, 13 Jan 2014If you saw our earlier post about the hot new BMW M3 Sedan and were about to call blasphemy for no coupe version, just settle down, silly. Remember: BMW now badges its two-door 3 Series models with the number four, and thus, meet the 2015 M4 Coupe. Looks hot, right?
So yeah, it's pretty much just the M3 with two less doors, but that doesn't make it any less important - or potent. Power comes from a turbocharged, 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, sending 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels via either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. You know, the usual.
Not only is the M4 more powerful than the M3 Coupe it replaces, it's a good deal lighter, too. BMW has managed to cut 176 pounds of weight out of the M4, and that means, with the increased output numbers, that the M4 will scoot to 60 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds with the DCT or 4.1 seconds with the do-it-yourself tranny. Either way, that's not what we'd call slow.
BMW i3 will come with unusual 'OwnersChoice' non-lease option
Sun, Mar 16 2014In case you were interested in driving a BMW i3 but were afraid of getting into a traditional lease, there's some good new for you. We think. BMW recently announced that it would offer something called "OwnersChoice" and "OwnersChoice with Flex" to make the elegant city EV an easier purchase. Or temporary purchase, anyway. Something called "OwnersChoice with Flex" is not listed on the federal government's consumer information page on vehicle financing and we couldn't get a better explanation out of BMW than the official announcement, but the gist appears to be that an i3 buyer can make a gigantic balloon payment at the end of the contract term in order to pay less in monthly costs along the way. The way Automotive News describes it, the typical balloon note chains the buyer to the car in such a way that, while you can get lower monthly payments, you're still on the hook for the amount of the financing even if you return the car. With OwnersChoice, if you give the i3 back after the contract is done (usually after three years), you're in the clear. With OwnersChoice with Flex, you need to pay up no matter if you keep the car or not, but you can take the $7,500 federal tax incentive and increase your balloon payment by - let's see here, what's the amount? ah, yes - up to $7,500, which would knock $208 (7,500 divided by 36) off your payment every month. BMW Group Financial Services (GFS) came up with this new lease/payment hybrid thing, and Fred Isele, BMW GFS vp of sales and marketing, says it lets owners get, "a comfortable payment for one of the highest technological and efficient premium electric vehicles available to date." BMW GROUP FINANCIAL SERVICES OFFERS 'OWNERSCHOICE WITH FLEX' FINANCING PRODUCT WITH PURCHASE OF NEW i3 -- PROVIDES END-OF-TERM OPTIONS SIMILAR TO LEASING, YET BENEFITS OF OWNERSHIP WOODCLIFF LAKE, NJ – February 25, 2014 – With the launch of the BMW i3, the brand's first premium electric vehicle, BMW Group Financial Services becomes one of the first in the industry to create a financial solution to ownership that provides eligible customers with the options to lower their monthly payment and return the vehicle at the end of their contract term. The financing product called 'OwnersChoice with Flex,' provides eligible BMW i3 customers the option to increase their final OwnerChoice balloon payment due at the end of their contract term by up to $7,500.
