Here I have for sale my 1999 BMW 540i Automatic. About 2 months ago, the dreaded diesel noise rattle started from the passenger side. I purchased the lower timing chain tensioner and it reduced the noise about 70%. The old one was in stuck on the closed position. A few days later the check engine light came on and read P1519. All the symptoms (noise and bad idle) indicate a failed VANOS. While driving my oldest one to summer camp, the noise came back, but this time was much, much louder. More like a clanking noise. At that point, I shut off the car and called a tow truck. My guess is that besides the VANOS, the timing chain rail guides are gone. I have not tried to start the engine again since I don't know the condition of the timing chain. I already purchased another car and will not have the time or room to tear the engine and find out what the problem is. For this reason, the car is being sold as NOT RUNNING and must be towed out of my garage.

The car has a salvage title because about 2 years ago my wife was hit on the driver's side door (included in the pictures). The insurance totaled the car and I bought it back. Here are the things I have done to the car:

  • New Radiator, original has a very small crack on the top neck. It was replaced with OEM.
  • Pretty much all gaskets have been replaced. Valve covers, intake, throttle body and lower oil pan.
  • ABS module was rebuilt. I think is still under warranty, no sure.
  • Pads, sensors and rotors have been replaced.
  • New knock sensors.
  • All cooling hoses are new.
  • Expansion tank was replaced as it developed a crack where the sensor is located at the bottom.
  • Front tires need replacing, they are included with the sale of the car. Did not get a chance to mount them. Rear tires are in good shape.
  • Everything works, A/C, heater, radio, cd changer, tape, interior lights, etc.
  • Missing pixels on radio and cluster as expected for age of car. Easy fix
  • New "cover" replaced because car develop a loud whistle noise. This is the part that connects to the air / oil separator. It's at the back of the intake.
  • The car has not been driven in the snow. I think the prior owner did for 1 year but the undercarriage is very clean and rust free.
  • BWM are well knows for having crappy paint jobs. Not enough paint. Chips and scratches are present. Hood, doors and trunk.
  • New battery less than 2 months old.

I can't think of anything else, but feel free to ask any questions. I can take any additional pictures of any part of the car if you need. Just ask. I love the car but this job is too much for me.

Wagons make a bit of a comeback, with new models, sales on the rise

Thu, Jan 10 2019

Consider this an official invitation to hop on the wagon bandwagon. There's still tons of room because, well, it's a wagon (and market share is still extremely small). But according to new data, the segment is growing. According to a report from Bloomberg, using data from Edmunds.com, roughly 211,600 Americans purchased wagons in 2018. That is technically down from the 237,600 sold in 2017, but wagon sales in the U.S. are up 29 percent from where they were five years ago. It's also the third year in a row that wagon sales broke the 200,000 mark. The sales trends have been somewhat representative of the availability of wagons. New models have debuted during the past 5 years and therefore offer more opportunity at more brands to buy wagons. In addition to more modest cars such as the Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen, several luxury and performance brands are offering wagons today, such as Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Jaguar, Volvo and Buick. (Bloomberg's headlines make the point that "crossovers are for the Kardashians," and wagons are just, well, classier.) This uptick in brand-name availability, as well as extremely well-executed design on most of the wagons currently available, has helped increase the segment's desirability. That, and its ability to better accomplish the same tasks at hand while standing out from the crossover and SUV crowd. Still, the posted numbers represent a small fraction of the total vehicles sold. According to the data, wagons only held a 1.4 percent market share in 2017, the segment's best recent year. Wagons hold a steadfast place in America's past, and they're writing an interesting new story. With the downturn in traditional cars, they may continue to create an unexpected narrative. BMW 2 Series specs leaked?

Wed, 09 Oct 2013

Thanks to spy shots from earlier in the year, we already know what the new BMW 2 Series will look like, but now we know a lot more about the coupe courtesy of an apparent BMW South Africa error and some quick-clicking enthusiasts. Though the information no longer appears to be posted on BMW's South African website, 2addicts.com managed to grab most of the details for the new coupe, including the model lineup, specs and most (if not all) of the options list for the upcoming replacement for the 1 Series.
Just like the latest 3 Series, the 2 Series model lineup starts at the 220i powered by a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder, but the more exciting BMW figures to be the M235i with its 320-hp, 3.0-liter straight-six. With the automatic transmission, the info says that the M235i weights 3,240 pounds and will be able to accelerate from 0-62 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds - making it both lighter and quicker than the 135is currently offered in the US. The base 220i coupe should also be fun to drive with its 180 horsepower and sub-3,000 pound curb weight.
A quick side-by-side comparison of the dimensions for the base 220i with our current base 128i shows that the new coupe rides on a longer wheelbase (105.9 in. vs. 104.7 in.), is about two inches longer (174.4 in. vs. 172.2 in.) and is an inch wider (69.8 in. vs. 68.8 in.). 2addicts.com even shows available paint colors, interior trim options and lists pricing for South African-spec models. Head on over to the forum to check out all the info they have posted, but we expect the 2 Series to be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show early next year.

Mini might build a sedan because it's running out of shapes

Wed, Apr 13 2016

Rumors suggest we could soon see a Mini with a trunk to haul your junk. Autocar cites unnamed insiders who claim the sedan is part of the brand's plan for upmarket growth. There's even a possibility the new model could use the Riley moniker in reference to the Elf (pictured above) from the 1960s, which was a Mini with a tiny trunk. The Mini sedan would use BMW's front-wheel-drive platform that underpins the X1 and Clubman and might share the wheelbase and frontend styling with the Clubman as well, according to Autocar. Mini's execs think the four-door would perform especially well in North America and China, where there's less demand for hatchbacks. Ralph Mahler, vice president of Mini's product management, hinted at the possibility of the four-door to Autocar. "For example, in Asia and the US, the sedan segment is very big. This is very interesting to us, of course," he said. Mahler admits that many people don't know about the Mini-based vehicles with trunks from the '60s, like the Riley Elf, so it would be hard to market the new model on that heritage. This could be the perfect time to add a Mini sedan to the lineup, and it might not be a completely new idea for the brand under its BMW stewardship; a rumor from 2012 shows that Mini's bosses considered a four-door at least once before. The company launched new versions of its Hardtop, Convertible, and Clubman, and even added four-door and all-wheel-drive versions of the Hardtop to further blur the lines between that car, the Clubman, and the Countryman. The next-generation Countryman crossover should debut later this year, and the brand reportedly cancelled the Superleggera Vision roadster and Rocketman compact, as Mini has chosen to go big with its new models and its lineup breadth. There are only so many versions of a hatchback a company can make, and the short-lived Mini Coupe wasn't exactly a huge success. If Mini is going to try a new body style, a sedan actually makes some sense, even if we'll probably prefer the look and practicality of the hatches. Related Video:
