For sale is my 1998 BMW 540i with 6-speed manual transmission and sport package.  This is an outstanding vehicle, up to date on maintenance, in very nice shape and is very fast (rated at 0-60 in ~5.5 seconds, quarter mile in ~14 seconds).  I have owned it since January 2012 and it has been an excellent vehicle, but it is a 3rd car and is simply not needed (or so says my wife!).  I just took it on a 400 mile trip and it performed flawlessly, getting close to 24mpg.

The follow maintenance includes two previous owners and myself

Everything on this car works, and it currently needs nothing - I would drive it across country in a second.  There are some various nicks and scratches on the paint, as it's a 15 year old car, but the paint shines up nicely, the grey leather is in good shape with no tears, and there is no body rust, save for a small spot on the driver door corner where the paint has flaked off a bit and there is a small ding on the driver rear quarter panel.  The car currently does not leak any fluids, although there is a very small seepage from the valve cover gaskets.  I just had my BMW mechanic look at it again, and he thinks there is no reason to replace it now - it hasn't gotten worse since the first time he looked at it over 6,000 miles ago, but at some point, it may need to be replaced. There is nothing else that needs attention - but feel free to bring your mechanic and thoroughly inspect it.

The OEM muffler has been replaced with an after market unit that (I think) sounds great.  A little more rumbly but it won't set off any car alarms.  Original muffler will be included with the car.  Also of note - there was an airbag light on when I bought the car - the issue is that the passenger seat sensor does not work correctly, so the passenger airbag will be deployed even if no one is sitting there - I installed a bypass plug to remove the light, but I can remove it upon request.  There are currently no check engine or other dash warning lights on.  The OEM shift linkage has been upgraded to a short-shift kit - very nice, short, notchy throws.  All gears engage correctly and there is no grinding or slippage.

Front tires have about 80% tread, rear tires have about 90% tread.  The rears were recently replaced due running over a piece of debris and rendering the tire irreparable.  Upon request, you can also have the 1 remaining good tire not mounted on the rim, which I saved due to it having about 80% tread left.  17" BBS wheels have some curb rash but still look pretty good.  When I recently replaced the front brake rotors, I upgraded them to Brembos and upgraded the pads to ceramic - the car stops very well.  Battery is less than 1 year old, clutch has less than 7,000 miles on it.  Air filter has been upgrade to a K & N.

6-disc changer and cassette player work correctly, heat and air conditioning work great, power seats, power windows, sunroof, cruise control and power tilt/telescope steering wheel all work correctly. The headlights are little cloudy and could use a good scrubbing on the inside.  Toolkit is present, as is full-size spare (although the rim is a little bent, see photo).  OEM front pop-out cup holders have been removed and replaced with fixed cup holders that are a little better than stock, I think.  Clear title in hand.

This car is available for viewing in Champaign, IL 61821.  If flying in, I will be happy to pick buyer up at Willard Airport (CMI) or at the Amtrak station in Champaign, both less than ten miles from my house.

Buy this Munro report, get a free BMW i3

Tue, Jan 13 2015

Here's an offer we've never heard of: if you buy the Master- or OEM-level version of a detailed production and cost report on the BMW i3, the engineering firm that produced the report will give you a 'free' i3. Munro & Associates is the company behind the study and the offer, its comprehensive breakdown of the production realities involved in the i3 including a video of the disassembly process of the range-extended hybrid and a detailed analysis of every part therein - everything from fuse boxes to crossbar beams, headlights and the battery pack. You've only got a day to take advantage, though - the report has to be purchased by the time CEO Sandy Munro gives his talk, "Deconstructing the BMW I3: Groundbreaking Technology and the Composite Car," in Detroit Wednesday morning. The price of said report? That's "TBD," so head to the Munro site if you're tempted by the idea of a new car that comes with a trunk full of paperwork. We just hope they're not selling the i3 that they tear down. The press release below has more information. Munro to Give Away 2014 BMW i3 with Every Purchase of the Consulting Firm's Master Teardown Report When Purchased at Two Upcoming Detroit Events DETROIT, Jan. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Visitors to the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) during Preview Week often go home with a lot of swag and trinkets, but how about a $50,000 BMW i3? This year, a local engineering firm, Munro & Associates, is giving away a BMW i3 electric car with every purchase of the Master-/OEM-level version of its benchmarking study of this unique vehicle when purchased during NAIAS or the Plastics in Automotive Conference. The study, the most extensive of its kind, details the production and costs of every system in this carbon-fiber electric vehicle, which CEO Sandy Munro calls the most advanced vehicle on the planet. WHO: Munro & Associates, the global leader in manufacturing, costing and benchmarking. Using its proprietary advanced design, quality and costing software, Munro developed comprehensive reports on key vehicle systems and – for the first time – will offer the reports for general distribution. WHAT: A FREE 2014 BMW i3 for anyone who purchases the Master-/OEM-level report during Preview Week of NAIAS or during Sandy Munro's presentation at the Plastics in Automotive Conference.

BMW recalling 40k+ motorcycles to replace rear wheel flange

Mon, Mar 30 2015

A problem with the rear wheels on a wide array of its motorcycles has prompted BMW and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to issue a recall for 43,426 vehicles. In the affected units, the mounting flange on the rear wheel is at risk of cracking if the bolts are over-tightened. If that flange cracks, "the rear wheel may not remain secured to the motorcycle," which is kind of important considering there are only two wheels on a motorcycle to start with. The recall affects certain model-year 1200 and 1300 models – including the R1200GS, R1200RT, R1200GS, R1200R, R1200S, R1200ST, K1200S, K1200R, K1200R Sport, K1200GT, K1300S, K1300R and K1300GT – as well as the HP2 Megamoto, HP2 Enduro and HP2 Sport. Owners of the affects units can expect to head from the manufacturer to arrange having the aluminum flange replaced with a steel one. Related Video: RECALL Subject : Rear Wheel Mounting Flange may Crack Report Receipt Date: MAR 11, 2015 NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V141000 Component(s): WHEELS Potential Number of Units Affected: 43,426 Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC SUMMARY: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 R1200GS and R1200RT, 2006-2010 R1200GS Adventure, 2007-2010 R1200R, 2007 R1200S and K1200R Sport, 2005-2007 R1200ST, 2008-2009 HP2 Megamoto, 2006 HP2 Enduro, 2008-2010 HP2 Sport, 2005-2008 K1200S, 2006-2008 K1200R, K1200GT, 2009-2011 K1300S, 2010-2011 K1300R, and 2009-2010 K1300GT motorcycles. In the affected motorcycles, the rear wheel mounting flange may crack if the rear wheel mounting bolts are over tightened. CONSEQUENCE: If the rear wheel mounting flange cracks, the mounting bolts may loosen and the rear wheel may not remain secured to the motorcycle, causing a loss of stability and increasing the risk of a crash. REMEDY: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the existing aluminum rear wheel flange with a steel one, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 21, 2015. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. NOTES: Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov. Motorweek remembers the Bimmers that made us all fall in love

Sat, Dec 27 2014

The enthusiast's tied-in-knots relationship with BMW makes the Bavarians one of those brands especially ripe for nostalgic flights. That's why as soon as we saw the opening shot of Motorweek's review of the 1986 BMW 325e and a 635Csi, we let out a long sigh and thought, "Ahhhhh, I remember those days..." The two red barons were the new entries for the year, the 325e offering a couple of extra doors for the first time, the 635CSi rounding up the powerplant's displacement compared to the 633CSi that preceded it. The inline six-cylinder in the current 335i sedan gets on with 300 horsepower; 28 years ago, the 325e made do with a 2.7-liter inline six offering 121 hp, taking 9.3 seconds to get to 60 miles per hour from a standstill. That's four seconds more than today. Those willing to pay $41,000 for the 635CSi got a 3.4-liter inline six with 182 hp, and Motorweek praised it as a "confident handling car that does feel big and clumsy at times." The more things change, you know... Check out the video for a reminder of how BMW got to be what it is, and to hear the most unusual use of the word "oriental" we've heard in a while.
