You are bidding on a 1985 BMW 524TD 4-door Sedan.

Although considered to be the first modern and relatively quiet diesel automobile,

only 1600 were sold in the United States when offered in 1985 & 1986.

The car is Alpine white with a black vinyl interior.

It has all of the standard power features of the E28 series,

and they all work except for the sunroof and the headrest adjustment (they never work).

The sunroof has some rust on the edge from being parked close to the ocean,

 and needs repair or replacement.

It is a 100% California car from Los Angeles, then Monterey Bay,

and recently the San Francisco Bay Area.

It recently overheated, and blew out the coolant.

It starts and runs, but cannot be driven any distance.

My mechanic and others diagnose it as a common head gasket failure.

Since I have owned it, I have had the following repairs and maintenance performed,

and have most of the service records:

Valve adjustment, replace cracked valve cover, replace cooling hoses and connectors,

rebuild entire air conditioning system including compressor and condenser,

replace all belts, drain and refill transmission fluid, repair door locks and windows as needed,

and install custom carpeted floor mats.

This is a car that is worth restoring, it has been a pleasure to drive,

but like any 28 year old car, it needs continued repairs and maintenance.

In good running condition, I estimate it to be worth at least $3000.

Needing major engine work, I am offering it for $1500 or best offer.

Are you the 2016 BMW M2?

Wed, 21 May 2014

From the looks of these spy shots, BMW is back testing the hotter version of the M235i, the M2. We first brought you pictures of the lightly disguised coupe a few weeks back. While those original shots were on the road, it would seem that BMW has transitioned its testing to the Nürburgring.
Here, we get a better look at the M2 prototype's M-spec wheels. This particular car is missing the traditional quadruple exhausts that serve as an easy identifier for BMW M products, although our spies report that the tips, along with a more assertive front fascia, will arrive when the M2 makes its production debut.
We can't yet confirm any powertrain details, but previous rumors had the M2 getting its go from a tuned version of the brand's N55 turbocharged inline-six. Take a look up top for this latest round of spy photos of the BMW M2.

Car subscription services: A slow, expensive start — but the potential is huge

Wed, Dec 26 2018

Americans are used to paying for subscriptions — to magazines and cable television, for instance — but experience shows they'll cancel when the price of admission gets too high, or there are more tempting alternatives. Cord cutters ditched nearly 1.5 million pay-TV subscriptions in 2017, according to a survey by Leichtman Research Group. Cable TV started out cheap with basic offerings, and then got expensive. The auto industry's subscription offerings are new, but they're starting out costly, and not price-competitive with traditional leasing. The upside is that they take the hassle out of car ownership for busy people by letting the service take care of maintenance, insurance, licensing and taxes. And they give consumers choice, often allowing relatively painless switches between different cars in the automakers' lineup. Subscription services also point the way toward an ownership-free auto experience, and offer an easy transition to a potential world where ride- and car-sharing will be dominant. Subscriptions are here to stay, but consumers may take a while to "get" them. Lincoln's subscription service for lightly used 2015 to 2017 models, offered through the Ford-owned Canvas beginning this year, got off to a slow start. Many early subscribers canceled. Last month, Cadillac announced it would " temporarily pause" its $1,800-per-month Book subscription service for "adjustments" as of December 1. According to the Wall Street Journal, "Snags with the back-end technology used to support the service made some customer-service functions tedious and time-consuming, adding costs for the company." The challenge for automakers is to come up with a strategy that offers consumers a compelling, affordable option to regular ownership, and one that can also make a profit. I think they'll find that sweet spot, but they're not there yet. Jack Nerad, former executive editorial director at Kelley Blue Book and author of " The Complete Idiot's Guide to Buying or Leasing a Car," points out that "A lot of people expected that subscriptions would be very valuable for people who wanted inexpensive transportation, but the reality is quite the opposite. Subscriptions are offering more choices for the wealthy.

Permanent erection lawsuit against BMW thrown out

Wed, 19 Mar 2014

The California man who claimed that he suffered from a 20-month erection after a four-hour ride on his BMW K1100RS motorcycle (similar model pictured above) has had his case dismissed. It seems the court found his claims too hard to believe.
Henry Wolf filed a product liability lawsuit against BMW and seatmaker Corbin-Pacific in the California Superior Court in April 2012 after he claimed a motorcycle ride in September 2010 caused a long-term case of priapism from the "ridge-like" saddle design. He asked for compensation for lost wages, medical expenses and emotional distress from both companies.
Nearly two years later, according to Visor Down, Judge James J. McBride decided that the case didn't have enough supporting evidence. A urologist testified that the plaintiff had priapism, but the court rejected the testimony of a neurologist who claimed the motorcycle's vibration caused the disorder. The defendants presented testimony from the bike's former and subsequent owners. Corbin-Pacific CEO Mike Corbin also spoke in the company's defense.
