THE OVERVIEW Offered for an appreciating new owner is this rare classic 1976 BMW 2002a two-door sedan! Finished in what appears to be ALL ORIGINAL Sahara tan paint over tan interior, this last-year of the venerable double '02 sports a good running 2.0 liter inline four cylinder engine with new Weber carb mated to a rare factory-equipped three speed AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION with stopping power provided by front disc and rear drum brakes. This near-forty-year-old classic E10 sports very nice E30 BBS mesh wheels with fair to good rubber, updated cd stereo, reclining bucket seats, factory tool kit, E30 325i spare tire/wheel, original red-tipped antenna and original owner's manual. The working five digit odometer shows 56,900 miles which is strongly believed to be just about 156,900 actual miles THOUGH I cannot verify this via Carfax or service history. This 1976 2002 is being sold with clean and clear California title, PLEASE NOTE: This 1976 BMW can ONLY be sold to a non-California resident/buyer due to aftermarket carb and missing original air cleaner and smog parts! This is a great find for about the cost of the sales tax alone on a new quickly-depreciating three series BMW sedan!
PLEASE CALL 650-307-2251 FOR QUESTIONS, TEST DRIVES AND/OR MECHANICAL INSPECTIONS. ALSO PLEASE EMAIL ME FOR MANY MORE DETAILED PHOTOS!
THE BODY AND TRIM As I hope is articulated in the many photos here, the exterior of this 1976 BMW is in quite presentable, very original unrestored "driver-quality" condition throughout with a nice shine to the paint. MOST IMPORTANT with these older BMWs is the "R" word.......RUST! Having owner dozens of these classic E10s, I can confidently say that this is absolutely one of the cleanest, driest, most original untouched rust-free examples I have seen in the last two decades. Is it 100% perfectly rust-free? Very close...99.99% with perfect shock towers front and rear, beautiful clean rocker panels, virgin body panels, There is only the beginning of surface corrosion in the spare tire well and some minute rock chipped spots where the weather has grazed the paint surface. Aesthetic imperfections on this car include some miscellaneous nicks, scratches, dimpling and wear to the exterior of this car. Overall a very nice driver-quality-example that will garner attention everywhere you drive!
THE INTERIOR The interior of this 1976 BMW is in very good to excellent original condition throughout! It features beautiful seat upholstery front and rear, amazingly pristine original loop carpeting, mint uncut door panels, superb original headliner with working dome light, nice dash with two or three heat cracks, upgraded CD stereo with rear deck-mounted speakers, working speedometer, odometer, lights and blinkers, working crank windows and the groovy vent wing windows. Imperfections inside the car include inop blower motor and horn, some cracking and wear on the steering wheel, slight pulling away of the door panel bottom corners. Overall this is one very cool classic well-preserved cockpit!
THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE This classic BMW starts, runs, shifts, brakes and handles very well. With its whopping 100 horsepower on tap it will certainly not keep up with a new 135i but has surprisingly peppy acceleration, solid secure braking, smooth up and downshifting automatic transmission, tight non-power assisted steering and crisp rattle-free suspension. NOTE: the engine is believed to be factory original. It runs fairly well and smooth though smokes a bit and is a bit tired but still quite usable. Driving this car with its responsive handling and open airy cockpit harkens back to why the 2002 was THE car that put BMW here on the map here in America four decades ago!

Automobile has a lengthy piece this month on how the four German mass-market luxury manufacturers each plan to go after Tesla with their own electric vehicles. It was written by Georg Kacher, the magazine's European bureau chief, and the English version came a month after he wrote the German-language original for Autobild. Tesla isn't exactly a threat to the Germans, but, according to the report, the Model S is planting the right kinds of seeds in niches that are important to the luxury players. The thinking is that - in addition to needed electric vehicles anyway for stricter US regulations - it's better to start designing the machinery now. The article posited Porsche's attack would rest on the coming Panamera platform, but a big hurdle would be battery placement. Unable to find one large space for a lithium-ion pack, engineers would instead put batteries everywhere they could, for a supposed tally of some "108 battery pouches" throughout the body. A few days after the Automobile piece, however, Porsche publicly said it had no intention of challenging the Model S, because the enthusiastic driving the brand is known for doesn't jive with useful range. In Kacher's retelling, Mercedes' plans are even more ambitious, supposedly taking aim at the Model S and the coming Model X. It would do this with an investment in excess of $2 billion in a program called "Ecoluxe" – Mercedes has no brand division akin to BMW's i and Audi's e-tron. The new brand would create a four-strong family of bespoke electric vehicles: a smaller platform with a wheelbase around 106 inches and a larger one with a wheelbase around 118 inches. In addition, the range would have "provisions for rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, and rear-wheel steering." The numbers are impressive: seating for seven in the larger vehicles, both longer than 16 feet, front and rear storage areas, ratings of up to 610 horsepower and production capacity of 80,000 units per year. When would we see such creatures? Perhaps as soon as 2019. We do know that if Tesla can knock the Model X over the outfield fence, automakers are going to have to do something. We don't know what the chances are that Ecoluxe is Mercedes' first move - but such a plan could help explain the weird Mercedes concept spied in October.

The 2013 BMW HP4 is the track-ready version of the manufacturer's already mighty S1000RR, which puts the bike at the very tip top of the two-wheeled BMW food chain. The R1200GS, meanwhile, is intended to be a somewhat more utilitarian machine. Capable of conveying both rider and gear over vast distances and uncertain terrain, the big-boy GS is the Swiss army knife to the HP4's rapier. Or at least that's what we've always been led to believe. BMW recently rolled out some footage during a press launch that showed the R1200GS is actually no slouch when it comes time to sling around a road course.
The company threw both bikes on Spain's Circuito de Almeria for a little sparring match, and miraculously, the HP4 didn't just up and walk away from the R1200GS. From from it. Instead, the two stay tightly matched through most of the course before something surprising happens. We won't spoil the ending for you. Is it possible the rider on the HP4 still had some in reserve? Sure, but from the sound and look of things, neither bike was giving an inch. Check out all the video action below for yourself.

Jay Leno puts eight wheels on display this week for Jay Leno's Garage from a quartet of retro-inspired BMW motorcycles. They are the creations of husband and wife team Larry and Carol Romestant, who build each one in their home garage.
Larry is a former aerospace engineer who loves BMW bikes, especially the K models. Now, he's combining his passion with a real talent for fabrication to build his own cycles with his wife. With Larry and Carol the only ones working on these projects, it takes them six to nine months to build each one. In addition to the old-school looks, the motorcycles are supposed to be a bit more user friendly than stock. For example, one of them ditches the standard five-speed gearbox in favor of a six-speed unit to be a little more comfy when cruising at high speeds.
Since there isn't enough time to take all four of them for a ride, Jay picks his favorite to test out on the open road. Scroll down to see which one he chooses.
