I’ve only owned this car for about two weeks and have only driven it about 80 miles. I bought it on eBay and the car wasn’t represented well – it’s too big of project for me to tackle right now.

I think with a bunch of work this could be a really nice car, but I’m just not currently in the market for a project car. I was told it was basically turn-key and ready to win car shows, but in fact, I believe it was only very recently assembled after being painted and has yet to be sorted. And I’ve finished a couple of vintage car restoration projects on my own to understand that really sorting out a car can take more time and effort than I have available.

So, back on the market it goes. My loss is your gain, and I’ll continue to deal with the headache of chasing down the previous owner (Michael Burford of Port St. Lucie, Florida) for fraudulent misrepresentation.

Anyways, enough of my story, on to the car (from bad to good):

- The car was in a front-end collision at some point and the repair was average at best. Note where the front of the left front shock tower still has small wrinkles, missing/bondo-ed seams, and the wide (extra?) seams above the headlights. It also looks a front panel for carbureted cars was used in the repair, but then then the carburetor hole for the air intake tube was sloppily filled in (see photo).

- At least the driver’s side floor has been replaced. The repair quality is average at best.

- There has also been some sort of repair to [at least] the left rear shock tower. The metal here doesn’t seem too bad and it seems solid now, but there is some metal and welds that are definitely not factory.

- The assembly of all the panels (hood, front fenders, doors) all need to be revisited to get things to look right and have the doors close properly. The front hood is pushed back, which causes it to hit the windshield wipers, which causes the gap at the front top of the doors to be too small. So I think the doors were adjusted back to compensate for this, which causes the window frames to hit the chrome trim, and not the rubber gasket.

- Despite being originally advertised as “rust free”, either there is still a lot of rust inside the front hood (see photos), or the repairs done very poorly. There is a tremendous amount of bondo and paint on the inside of the hood.

- The trunk floor under the spare tire has been replaced, and is still missing the spare tire tie down.

- The assembly of many of the items on the car appears to be very rushed. The front bumper is loose and not mounted with the proper hardware. The door latches were loose but I tightened them up. The driving lights that were added look cool, but are not mounted properly and will not hold their position (they move over bumps). I also think the gauge wire for these lights is too small and there is no relay.

- The carpet is new but super low quality. Plus, I don’t think it was ever driven with the carpet in the car. The cut out for the gas pedal is too small, and literally can’t be used with it in the car (hence the photos with the driver’s side carpet in trunk). All the carpet should probably be replaced.

- There are no seat belts (well, technically half of each front seat belt is installed).

- The driver’s side seat is broken or need to be properly installed or something. Only one side “catches” on the recline mechanism so when you sit in it the back leans towards the middle. This combined with no seats belts provides a not very confidence inspiring ride.

- The radiator was not refurbished but instead just spray painted black. It needs to be replaced. The hoses and thermostat also likely need to be replaced.

- The aftermarket exhaust system is not mounted correctly. It rattles and is loose (you can shake the end of it, and it clunks on bumps).

- The left rear door panel was never mounted (and may be missing tabs or ?). It’s basically just resting there.

- The inside door lock mechanism was upholstered over. I assume the mechanism is still under there, but I have no idea.

- Some fuel lines have been replaced, the remaining that haven’t still need to be (they are quite old).

- The fuel & temperature gauge is missing its glass.

- Left rear tail brake like it out (may just be the bulb, I have no idea).

- Driver’s side door stop is missing.

- Front right low beam headlight is out.

- Headlights need to be aligned.

- License plate light holders are loose.

- The horn doesn’t work. The Momo horn button is glued down, so I’m not sure what’s under there.

- The hazard light switch does not stay de-activated, and sometimes turns itself on when going over bumps (so then need to the hazards off again).

- A/C does not work (blows, but hot air).

- Dash vent control levers need to be seated properly and re-installed. As it is currently installed, none of the knobs for the levers can be mounted.

- The spare tire is beyond rotten.

- The mount for the switch that was hacked together to manually operate the cold start valve broke the second time I used it, so now it hangs for the steering column. Obviously this should just be removed all together and repaired properly.

- I have zero documentation and receipts on the car. I was told the car was painted at “Biltmore Auto Body” in Port St. Lucie, Florida, but that shop does not appear to ever have existed. Documentation was promised, but never delivered.

- The car idles high (~2000 when cold), but eventually settles down.

- The car sometimes stumbles a little on hard acceleration, but it’s not really bad. I’m not that familiar with 2002s, maybe this is normal. Overall the car does pull pretty strong and seems speedy.

- The car does drive fairly well and the suspension seems tight to me.

- The paint isn’t super high-quality, but the car does look great. Nice color, nice wheels, great stance.

So, that’s it. I’d love to see this car go to a good home because it does look great and I think it could be a great car someday, but it’s going to take some time and money to get there.

Just for reference, here is the description and photos from the previous auction.

Audi, BMW, Daimler buy Nokia's Here digital mapping business

Tue, Aug 4 2015

The fight for control of Nokia's Here digital mapping service appears to have drawn to a close as a consortium of German automakers has announced a deal to jointly acquire the business from the Finnish telecom giant. As anticipated, ownership in Here will now be taken over jointly by Audi, BMW, and Daimler, beating out reported rivals bids from the likes of Apple and Uber. Here is one of the largest and most advanced digital mapping and location systems. It started out in Chicago in 1986 as Navteq before Nokia acquired it in 2007, and is now slated to change ownership again. The cloud-based service maintains high-definition digital maps for nearly 200 countries and supports over 50 languages, gathering data from users to update the data continuously. Rather than transition the service into their own proprietary technology, however, the automakers insist that it will remain open "to all customers from the automotive industry and other sectors." Ownership will be shared equally between the three companies, with "none of them seek[ing] to acquire a majority interest" in Here. For another, Here's management is promised to remain independent, and "the consortium will not interfere into operational business." Though the purchase price has not been disclosed, it is rumored to be worth in the neighborhood of $2.7 billion. Assuming it passes regulatory approval, the acquisition is slated to be completed in the first quarter of next year. The German automakers anticipate implementing the service to provide connected vehicles with accurate, up-to-date information on road and other conditions. Examples it outlines include warning other drivers of icy conditions based on outside temperature and ABS activation. It could also warn drivers of impending traffic jams, or even guide traffic through green lights in an urban environment. In the future, the highly detailed maps are envisioned to enable fully automated driving as well. 2014 BMW 4 Series Convertible is easy, breezy, beautiful

Wed, 20 Nov 2013

BMW debuted its 2014 4 Series Convertible today at the LA Auto Show, and the sporting two-door will feature a folding hardtop - like the convertible 3 Series before it - and be offered in 428i and 435i guises.
The 428i Convertible is equipped with BMW's 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, which pumps out 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque - good for sprinting from 0-60 miles per hour in 6.2 seconds. The 435i Convertible gets the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, which steps up output to 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. The topless 435i drops the 0-60-mph time to 5.5 seconds. Both cars come standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and BMW says that a manual transmission will not be offered on 4 Series Convertibles in the US market.
The 4 Series Convertible will be offered in Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport trims. Pricing starts at $48,750 for the 428i Convertible and $54,900 for the 435i. Head on below to peruse the (long) press release for details.

Someone's willing to pay $16,000 for a hollow, non-working BMW i8

Tue, Aug 26 2014

There is an unusual BMW i8 for sale on eBay right now. Unlike your average – and by that we mean "working" – i8, this one pretty much just sits there, looking pretty. See, the i8 in question is just a promotional body shell. It's fullsize and being sold (we think) by a legit BMW dealer (Laurel BMW of Westmont), so it's got strong ties to the real thing, but there's nothing inside. In fact, you can't open the doors or windows and the wheels don't move, unless you count the tiny rolling castors that are a part of the prop. There is no fancy plug-in hybrid powertrain – no powertrain of any sort, in fact – and it was "professionally crafted just for BMW dealers." The headlights do turn on, though, so that's something. What's most impressive, though, is that there are 50 bids for this non-working BMW. In fact, the bidding has climbed up to $16,000. For a car that can't fulfill its mission as a car, that's pretty impressive. Oh, and those bids have not yet hit the reserve price, so the dealer is obviously hoping it can get more money for this hollow BMW. The official base MSRP for a working i8 is $135,700. The first i8 delivered in the US, a special edition for Pebble Beach, just sold for $825,000.
