This One-Of-A-Kind 1976 BMW 2002" is described as "highly refined" by the author in European Car magazine article (April of 1992) and  "a stunning runner more than able to vanquish contemporaneity performance cars". "An almost complete rehab"... "The exterior is exceptionally clean, the subtle restyling coming from a lowered suspension and 14in wheels, Suspension Techniques springs, front & rear in combination with Bilstein Sport struts and shocks".

I will attempt to highlight the the three page article on this car in bullet form:

  • Front strut brace
  • 22mm sway bars front & rear w/ red polyurethane bushings
  • tii front strut housings
  • tii dual piston calipers
  • Smaller rear slave cylinders
  • tii brake booster w/ master cylinder for additional line outlets to feed four piston on the front
  • Hard steel brake lines
  • Factory 25% slip differential with ring-and-pinion ratio of 3.64:1
  • Getrag overdrive 5-speed transmission
  • OE Bumpers shortened and lightened (quite noticeable reduced polar moment of inertia and improved overall handling)
  • Front spoiler
  • Cibie 100watt headlamps
  • Halogen brake light conversion
  • Factory sunroof
  • Factory Black Leather seats
  • Custom leather trim door pockets
  • BMW Formula One leather steering wheel
  • Black fascia instrument cluster incorporated from earlier 2002 using late model OE instruments
  • Added VDO gauges measuring boost/vacuum, oil pressure, oil temp
  • Clardy rotary air conditioner
  • Alpina dead pedal (a rare 2002 item)
  • Tri-Amp 700 watt stereo, with equalizer, subwoofer
  • Aviation grade lock nuts and bolts on forward portion of exhaust system
  • Bavarian Imports of Atlanta rebuilt engine w/8.0:1 CR Pistons
  • OE Camshaft
  • E-12 Cylinder head (has larger valves)
  • 12-lb Tilton aluminum flywheel
  • Sachs clutch assembly
  • Oil cooler, MSD ignition, tii ignition distributor
  • Exhaust w/Stahl headers
  • Custom exhaust / mufflers fitted for track
  • Camden Supercharger (installed during 1990"s)
  • Mikuni 40mm side draft carburetor
  • intercooler
  • All books and compete records
  • And more....

Note: It is not a happy car in the cold weather. It starts first crank in the spring, summer & fall but gets balky when the engine block is 40 degrees or colder. I am told this is normal for the old mechanics of such a car. I used a small booster when it was very cold. It always starts after three or four cranks and run great once engine warmed up no matter what the temperature. There are a few scratches in the exterior of sunroof that the pictures do not reveal (from when service repaired sunroof)

BMW X4 Concept is no Shanghai surprise

Thu, 04 Apr 2013

"One in four new BMW cars is now a BMW SAV." If you're new to BMW parlance, SAV stands for Sports Activity Vehicle, a vehicle type most of us more commonly refer to as a crossover, and that statistic, which comes straight from the automaker itself, tells you all you need to know about why the X4 Concept you see above exists.
Like its larger X6 sibling, the BMW X4 Concept tries to shove a crossover in a mold shaped vaguely like a fastback coupe. Put another way, the X4 is likely to be a polarizing design, though perhaps not to the extent that the X6 divided opinions. As for us, we definitely prefer the styling of this X4 Concept, with its strong character lines and impressive wheel-to-bodyside ratio, over that of its bigger brother. That said, we're sure the AMC Eagle comparisons will begin in earnest starting right about... now.
Dimensionally, it seems the most obvious machine with which to compare this X4 Concept is the 3 Series Wagon - we're not sure if it will be as spacious inside as the 3 Series Gran Turismo. A two-inch stretch in the wheelbase ought to bring a commensurate improvement in legroom, and a body that's nearly five inches longer should be a boon for cargo capacity. Of course, that fastback roofline will surely cut down on the car's roominess inside, but we'll have to wait for the final production model to judge its true capabilities.

Police smash sinking BMW window with rock to save woman trapped inside

Thu, Feb 19 2015

Two quick-thinking police officers in New Zealand saved a woman's life after her BMW somehow ended up in the the ocean on Tuesday afternoon. Witnesses told Stuff.co.nz the woman drove off of a rock wall surrounding a parking lot at Waitemata Harbour in Auckland, New Zealand, and into the ocean. Her BMW immediately began filling with sea water. Bystanders called police and made their own attempts to save the woman. Officers Paul Watts and Simon Russell also tried to open her car doors and smash the windows with a baton. Their failed efforts wasted precious time. The woman soon had to crawl toward the back window, the last part of her car not completely submerged in water. Officer Watts smashed the window with a rock and they were finally able to pull her to safety. Watts told The New Zealand Herald the woman was moments away from drowning. Seconds after extracting her the car sank completely into the ocean. "It was pretty close, probably 30 or 40 seconds after we managed to get the female out of the car, the car was already slipping further into the water," Watts told the Herald. Police are still investigating what caused the accident. The woman was in shock and suffered cuts and bruises. She is in stable condition at a local hospital. BMW i3s traction control tech going in all BMW, Mini cars

Wed, Jan 3 2018

The BMW i3s is essentially a warmed-up version of the i3 electric car we all know and love. The performance boost isn't huge — just 14 horsepower and 15 pound-feet of torque — but it also gets a new suspension, wheels and tires as well as an improved traction control system. We found the car to benefit from all the updates when we drove it for our First Drive Review, but now BMW has offered up more details on just how the traction control system of the i3s helps make it better to drive. The company says it'll expand the technology to all future BMW and Mini models as well. The i3s's system is calibrated to help it to pull away quickly from a stop, making full use of the instantaneous torque offered by the electric motor. It also improves stability when accelerating out of corners, when using regenerative braking and, of course, when the road conditions are less than ideal. The results are palpable, and with the other improvements the i3s definitely feels stronger off the line, as we found on our drive. It's also about a half-second quicker to 60 miles per hour, at 6.8 seconds. The secret is in the response time of the stability control, which BMW claims is 50 times faster than the conventional system. This is made possible by moving the control process into the powertrain itself, rather than a remote unit. This reduces the signal path and, thus, the response time of the traction control system. BMW's Head of Chassis Development, Peter Langen, said of it, "With their high levels of torque and instantaneous responses to every movement of the accelerator, electric motors already make significantly higher demands on driving stability systems than conventional power units." While engineered to make the most of the electric motor, BMW says the shorter cycles of this traction control system show promise for internal combustion vehicles as well. As such, we'll begin to see the improved technology applied across the BMW and Mini lineups going forward. Related Video:
