1973 BMW 2002

Justin 503-969-5127

Hello eBay fans!  Welcome to my auction.  On the auction block today is a really nice driver quality BMW 2002.  The 1973 model is the last year to use all of the chrome on the bumpers and the sought after round tail lights.  This is a really nice little car.  It looks good and it runs good too.

This 2002 is located in Ridgefield, CT, but has been a west coast California and Oregon car.

The BMW is finished in its factory color of Verona Red and has Black Leatherette interior.  This little car catches everybody’s attention wherever it goes.  The body is not rusty, but there is some evidence of rust under the car and there is a repaired hole in the spare tire well.  It is still a really solid little car.  As you can see from the shots of the floor under the carpets, the floors are solid and original.

I have done a lot to this car to really help it along.  It has a new windshield and front and rear new rubber and seals.  I also just installed a new mechanical fuel pump.  Those of you paying very close attention may see an electric fuel pump in the photographs, but that has been changed back to a factory mechanical one.

As I mentioned, the 2002 runs well.  It starts right up and does not smoke cold or warm.  I have noticed a few drops of gear oil under the car from time to time, but the engine is sealed up tight.  The transmission shifts well through all gears and there are no syncro problems whatsoever.  The clutch is strong, but you will feel some chatter from the flywheel if you are one who rides the clutch when starting off.

The BMW stops straight and true and the tires are in great shape.

The wipers now use a toggle under the dash for operation and one of the license plate lights are missing.  The little plastic clip on the passenger side visor just broke.  The engine is currently running a Webber carb with a hi-pro air filter, but the original is in the trunk.  The chrome bumperettes are in there too.  There really isn’t a whole lot else that this car needs.

Please keep in mind, this is not a barn find old car that was just resurrected for sale.  This car has been road worthy its whole life.  Also keep in mind that if you are new to vintage car ownership, a good and honest European mechanic is the key to a lifelong love affair with your vintage auto.  Cars like this BMW were meant to last a very long time, but do require love in the form of service and repairs.

I am setting the reserve very low and I know the 2002 will sell the first go around as long as we all play by these rules.

#1.  Only bid if you have intentions to buy.

#2. Ask any and all questions before bidding.

#3. Please contact me BEFORE BIDDING if you have zero or negative feedback.

Just be real and genuine and I will make sure that the winning bidder is happy with his or her purchase.  I have 100% positive feedback and I plan on keeping that.  Also, I will end the sale for the right offer so don’t wait till the last second and worry about missing out.  Just call me and we will work out a fair price..

Also, this is a good BMW and I love it, but there of those in the world of BMW that will not.  Please do not expect a new car here.  This car is over 40 and has not been through a nut and bolt restoration.  This is a driver’s car.  Sure, you can show it..  But please be reasonable with your expectations if you are a perfectionist.  This is an AS-IS sale.  The miles stated what shows on the odometer and may reflect miles over the mechanical limits of the gage.

I’m Justin my Phone number is 503-969-5127 call me anytime..  I love to talk about this 2002.

Plug In 2014: BMW i DC Fast Charger is poised to change the EV game

Thu, Aug 7 2014

It looks like it's just a blue box on a pole, but BMW's new i DC Fast Charger represents a much bigger deal than just the lowest-cost SAE Combo Charger on the market. BMW sees it as the key to getting more drivers into electric vehicles. As Robert Healey, the EV infrastructure manager for BMW of North America told us, "For [BMW], the future is clear. DC charging really is the future." "DC charging really is the future." – Robert Healey, BMW We spoke with Healey at the Plug-In 2014 conference in San Jose, CA last week about the promise of the new $6,548 DC fast charger. "The strategy is pretty simple," he said. "BMW wants to get as many DC Fast Chargers out there as possible. We're not in the charging business, we're in the EV business and to support the sales of our cars, we have identified some key areas: home charging, public charging and assistant services for EV drivers." That's why the first of the new blue boxes will be installed at the 285 i dealers in the US, many of whom already installed the cables needed for fast charging when they put in the Level 2 chargers, said BMW's Cliff Fietzek, manager of connected eMobility. Even if you haven't gotten a site ready for a DC fast charger, the installation costs for BMW's unit are lower because you don't need to pour concrete (for the wall unit) and the SAE Combo connector plug costs "significantly" less than the competing CHAdeMO plug, Fietzek said. One minor drawback to the BMW DC fast charger compared to the more expensive traditional, full-size DC fast chargers is that the 24kW BMW fast charger allows you to charge to 80 percent full in 30 minutes, while the bigger units can do the job in 20. The good news for EV drivers with SAE Combo cars (which, in the US, means the Chevy Spark EV and the VW e-Golf) is that any driver with a Combo plug car and a ChargePoint card will be able to use the BMW stations. In fact, BMW is talking with both GM and VW on where to install SAE Combo stations in the US so that there is minimal duplication of effort. In other places, BMW is working with other automakers, including Nissan, which uses a competing fast charging standard. "In Great Britain, we are installing triple chargers, the CHAdeMO, SAE Combo and the high-power, three-phase AC that can go up to 43 kW to support the Renault [EVs] and others," Fietzek said.

Alex Zanardi back in the driver's seat with BMW

Tue, 21 Jan 2014

If there's ever been an inspirational story in the pantheon of motor racing history, surely it's that of Alessandro Zanardi. The Italian driver worked his way up the motor racing ladder, making it into Formula One and winning two CART championships for Chip Ganassi Racing back before the series re-merged into IndyCars. Tragedy struck in 2001 when he lost both his legs in a crash at the Lausitzring in Germany, but rather than accept his fate, Alex pushed on. Fitted with prosthetic limbs, he learned to drive a racing car with hand controls and got back in the driver's seat.
Zanardi drove for BMW in the European Touring Car Championship and then in the World Touring Car Championship that replaced it, landing on the podium several times despite his physical disadvantage. He left racing in 2009 to train for the Paralympics, winning two gold medals in London, but Alex apparently couldn't shake the racing bug. BMW modified one of its M3 DTM racers with hand controls for him to test later that year. And now he's returning to motor racing full time.
BMW has just announced that Zanardi will be driving a Z4 GT3 in the Blancpain Sprint Series, the successor to the FIA GT Series and short-distance counterpart to the Blancpain Endurance Series. The car has been modified with the hand controls the Bavarian automaker's racing department fitted to the aforementioned M3 DTM and will be fielded by the ROAL Motorsport team with which Alex challenged for the European Touring Car Championship last decade.

Mercedes may be working on a new electric car dubbed 'Ecoluxe'

Fri, Dec 26 2014

Automobile has a lengthy piece this month on how the four German mass-market luxury manufacturers each plan to go after Tesla with their own electric vehicles. It was written by Georg Kacher, the magazine's European bureau chief, and the English version came a month after he wrote the German-language original for Autobild. Tesla isn't exactly a threat to the Germans, but, according to the report, the Model S is planting the right kinds of seeds in niches that are important to the luxury players. The thinking is that - in addition to needed electric vehicles anyway for stricter US regulations - it's better to start designing the machinery now. The article posited Porsche's attack would rest on the coming Panamera platform, but a big hurdle would be battery placement. Unable to find one large space for a lithium-ion pack, engineers would instead put batteries everywhere they could, for a supposed tally of some "108 battery pouches" throughout the body. A few days after the Automobile piece, however, Porsche publicly said it had no intention of challenging the Model S, because the enthusiastic driving the brand is known for doesn't jive with useful range. In Kacher's retelling, Mercedes' plans are even more ambitious, supposedly taking aim at the Model S and the coming Model X. It would do this with an investment in excess of $2 billion in a program called "Ecoluxe" – Mercedes has no brand division akin to BMW's i and Audi's e-tron. The new brand would create a four-strong family of bespoke electric vehicles: a smaller platform with a wheelbase around 106 inches and a larger one with a wheelbase around 118 inches. In addition, the range would have "provisions for rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, and rear-wheel steering." The numbers are impressive: seating for seven in the larger vehicles, both longer than 16 feet, front and rear storage areas, ratings of up to 610 horsepower and production capacity of 80,000 units per year. When would we see such creatures? Perhaps as soon as 2019. We do know that if Tesla can knock the Model X over the outfield fence, automakers are going to have to do something. We don't know what the chances are that Ecoluxe is Mercedes' first move - but such a plan could help explain the weird Mercedes concept spied in October.
