1973 Bmw 2002 Base Sedan 2-door 2.0l Malaga/black "roundie" on 2040-cars

Selling my 1973 BMW 2002, 2.0 litre base model, Malaga/Black with black interior and factory sunroof. This has been a project over the last year or so, but some issues remain. I've lost interest in the car and trying to fix them: the car would suit someone who is looking for a 2002 "roundie" and is prepared to address a) a smokey exhaust, b) a rough idle, c) scruffy paint. The car is drivable - it shifts into all gears, the brakes work. I know very little history about the car. I bought it about two years ago. According to the previous owner it had been in Southern California for at least 10 years before then, and prior to that must have been in Colorado, judging by a faded sticker in the rear window from a seminary in Denver. The BMW archives told me that the car was manufactured on February 7th, 1973 and delivered on February 9th, 1973 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original color was Malaga, paint code 021. Here's some more details: 1) Title is clear and in my name. VIN 2588395. 2) Factory sunroof 2) Matching numbers (original engine) 3) Center console with additional VDO gauges: Vacuum, Volts, Oil Pressure (with sender) 4) Working electrics (gauges, lights, washer pump etc.) 5) Weber 32/36 DGAV dual carb with water choke 6) Pertronix ignition 7) Mileage: true value unknown 8) Silver dollar gauges Rust: the previous owner told me he fixed rust on the strut towers in the trunk - see the trunk photos. There was some rust at the top of the front left wing behind the fender (a common rust spot on these cars) which I repaired with fiberglass - the repair is not visible - the area is not structural. There is some bubbling under the paint at the same position on the other side. There is some evidence of rust on the passenger side rocker, just behind the front wheel well. The spare tire well shows evidence of repair in the past, but not by me: I just applied POR-15 to the inside. There was some rust through at the base of the front valance, which was repaired. The floor pans look good, both from inside the car and underneath. Again, please see photos. Here's a list of what's new, replaced or notable: 1) New windscreen, new windscreen seal and lockstrip 2) Two new front tires (Falken 175/70-R13) 3) New rear window seal and lockstrip 4) New oil filter (Framm) and oil change (Castrol 20W50) 5) New BP6ES plugs 6) New ignition wires 7) New distributor cap and rotor 8) Replaced distributor 9) New in-line fuel filter 10) New fuel hose 11) Rebuilt Weber carb 12) New Weber water choke assembly 13) New VDO oil pressure sender and right angle adapter 14) New exhaust manifold studs, nuts and gasket 15) New exhaust down pipe clamp and donut seal 16) New valve cover gasket (valves gapped to 0.006) 17) New battery 18) Replacement steering wheel 19) New washer pump 20) New gas tank 21) New front bucket seats 22) Carpet replaced with good used 23) Recovered rear bench seat and back 24) Refinished interior trim (door panels, rear seat panels) 25) New sunroof seals 26) New wiper blades 27) New dashboard cover 28) New trunk and hood badges 29) Replacement speedo, shows 10k - not original mileage (which is unknown) Here's a list of what goes with the car: 1) Owner's manual (good readable condition) and some other brochures (poor condition) etc. in blue BMW pouch 2) Original front seats, and all attachment hardware 3) Original spare tire and jack Here's a list of "issues": 1) Engine idles roughly, exhaust smokes after engine warms up. May be running rich (carb issue), or may be worn valve stem seals: I don't know. Manifold vacuum is good (around 20mmHg at idle), oil pressure around 30psi warm engine. Engine revs freely. Timing set correctly. 2) Headliner tatty and stained 3) The front struts are bouncy and probably need replacing 4) Blower fan works but is squeaky 5) The paint looks fine from 20ft, iffy from 10ft, and downright poor close-up. 6) Radio/cassette works, but is not hooked up. There are no speakers. Since I haven't driven the 2002 more than once or twice around the block, I cannot estimate whether it would make it on a cross country journey or even across town. You are welcome (and encouraged) to inspect the 2002 before the auction ends. If you need any more information, or photos (I have many), don't hesitate to ask, and I will do my best to answer. This auction may end early as the car is also for sale locally. A deposit of $500 is payable via PayPal within 24 hours if you win the auction, and the balance should be paid within 7 days, EITHER cash in person when the car is picked up, OR via wire to my bank account (I will give you details) before the car is released. NO OTHER METHODS OF PAYMENT ARE ACCEPTABLE. The auction winner is entirely responsible for pickup/shipping/transport of the car, although I am of course happy to help with the logistics. |

Recharge Wrap-up: BMW i8's Engine of the Year, biodiesel producer guilty

The i8 PHEV uses a 1.5-liter, three-cylinder gasoline engine with a hybrid drive unit including a 96-kilowatt electric motor. BMW beat Ford's 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine by a small margin to win the award for best overall engine. It also took the award for the 1.4-liter to 1.8-liter category, as well as best new engine. Tesla beat BMW to win the green engine category for the electric powertrain of the Tesla Model S. The head of Audi powertain development is quitting as the automaker steps up electrification. Stefan Knirsch has worked at Audi since late 2013, and previously worked at Porsche as the head of quality management and engine development. Germany's Auto Motor und Sport magazine had reported that Knirsch was leaving Audi, which Audi confirmed without giving a departure date or saying if he would be working elsewhere. Audi has been feeling pressure from its competitor Mercedes-Benz, and has been working on improving its EV offerings and autonomous vehicle technology. Read more from Reuters. The owner of a biodiesel company has pleaded guilty to fraud. Philip Joseph Rivkin, aka Felipe Poitan Arriaga, took part in a scheme to defraud the EPA, falsely claiming to be producing millions of gallons of biodiesel. This allowed his company, Green Diesel, to receive renewable fuel credits and sell them to oil companies and brokers. "These crimes are a serious threat to an important program that helps combat climate change," says Cynthia Giles of the EPA. "Companies and individual managers should get the message that there are serious consequences for breaking the rules and undermining the integrity of this program." BMW i3 starts near $35,000; NA first deliveries January 2014
Mon, 08 Jul 2013While in Germany at the first early pre-production drives of the hotly anticipated BMW i3, BMW people finally hinted at a price ballpark. Numbers being tossed around by pundits have actually been pretty close to what BMW is discussing internally - between $35,000 and just over $40,000. We have been assured now that the base price, should one choose to buy and not lease in the Euro zone, is just over 35,000 euro, with some big taxes included in that price. In the US, the starting price for the fully EV plug-in version should be $34,500 or right thereabouts. In addition to new pricing, we've also gotten our best-yet look at the i3, with the freshly uncovered spy shots you see here.
European deliveries begin in November of this year for the fully electric version of the rear-wheel-drive i3 with 168-horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The e-motor mounted over the rear axle is supplied with energy by the 22-kWh lithium-ion battery pallet under the passenger compartment. Recharging happens in any of three ways: public or personal garage plug-in charge station (garage version not included in the price), the onboard system's Pro Eco mode that adds resistance to the drivetrain in a type of rolling brake energy recuperation, or through the normal brake energy and off-throttle coasting regeneration more common to EVs. Range on a full charge of this drivetrain is said to be upwards of 100 miles under hyper-miling conditions.
Perhaps the best bit of news is that the alternative, range-extending, two-cylinder 600cc engine supplied by BMW Motorrad for the hybrid version of the i3 - mounted in the rear together with the e-motor - will add only 2,000 euros in Europe and about $2,000 in the US. This is a range-doubling solution that could have brought a much higher price gouge, so thank you, BMW. The hybrid e-drive i3 version arrives a couple months after the full-EV launch version. Remember that, unlike the very similar system for the Chevrolet Volt, the system in the i3 supplies no mechanical torque to the driven axle and is only used as a generator (a system BMW first used last year in the 1 Series-based Active ). The US is seen as the clear number one market for the i3.
BMW M4 Convertible spied with naked top and trunk
Mon, 10 Feb 2014Our trusty spy photographers have been at it again, snagging these first images of the forthcoming BMW M4 Convertible without camouflage on its retractable roof and rear deck. You'll recall that this is not the first time we've seen the followup to the M3 Convertible, but that the last batch of images we had were encumbered by a lot more camouflage - this car is virtually naked by comparison.
Not surprisingly, the M4 looks to share its folding hardtop design with the standard 4 Series droptop, and it should operate in a similar manner as well. It's no surprise, but it looks like BMW is going to try and make the transition from M4 Coupe to M4 Convertible as effortless as previous efforts converting the M3 to an M3 Convertible. That should mean that below the beltline, this car is nearly identical to the coupe we saw in Detroit.
As for the camo'd features on these spy photos, the hood, front fascia, rear fascia, quarter panels, side sills and mirrors have all been shown on the M4 Coupe, and don't really bear mentioning. There's been no word of just where the M4 Convertible will make its debut, although considering the lack of disguise on this car, Geneva seems like a likely destination.
