You can’t really call yourself a car guy or gal until you’ve owned a BMW 2002. These Bavarian bargains are one of the last true vintage sport car values left. Porsche 911 and 356 prices have skyrocketed. Even good Alfas are hard to find and growing in value. What makes 2002s so desirable is that they are affordable to own, a blast to drive, and very reliable…the perfect vintage touring/rallying car. The 1972 2002tii is regarded by many as the most desirable and the “one to have.” Over the years, many enthusiasts have become jaded by “over-the-top” restorations or insanely original and unused examples that seem to be popping up. Although these are great to look, are they really that fun to enjoy? The majority of us really just want to either relive a distant memory or just have fun driving a vintage car. Do we really want to spend weeks cleaning the car with Q-tips just to have someone tell us what’s wrong with our car? Or, would we rather hop behind the wheel and take the car through its paces on some deserted twisty back road? If you are like me, I’m guessing the latter. This Tii is the perfect car to simply drive and enjoy. It’s not going to win any concours events and those collector snobs who only care if a car has the exact right factory screw will probably skip over this one. However, it does look great, it is a blast to drive, and it won’t swallow up your kid’s college fund. Recently, this 2002 received a new paint job in the correct original (and rare) factory Atlantik Blue. The seats were reupholstered. The original M10 engine was rebuilt as well as the Kugelfischer mechanical pump. A new electric fuel pump was installed as well as a new heater fan, Bilstein shocks, and suspension bushings. This Tii is a very nice driver. It comes equipped with a Frigiking A/C unit that is hooked up and blows. It doesn’t blow cold and probably needs a recharge. The original Blaupunkt radio works. All the gauges appear to work properly except for the clock. The door panels and seats were recently reupholstered and have no signs of wear. The carpet looks like it was recently replaced. The dash has a plastic aftermarket cover on it, which fits well. The early-style small diameter Nardi steering wheel has a great look and the original leather wrap is in very good condition. The car drives great. It is very tight and it shifts smoothly. Handling is crisp and the motor revs freely. This would be great as just a weekend car or daily driver. This BMW 2002tii includes extra keys, original spare, and a tool kit. Autoblog fan favorite car ads from Super Bowl XLIX
Mon, Feb 2 2015Super Bowl XLIX is in the books, and the New England Patriots emerged victorious. Of course, if you're like us, the big game wasn't so much about the battle between the east coast and west, so much as a fight between the world's automotive advertisers. We collected and collated all of last night's new ads and put them together for you to vote on. And yes, we're limiting this year's contest to last night's new features. That's why you aren't seeing Dodge's epic Wisdom among our collection of commercials, and it's a similar story with Chevrolet's Truck Guy Focus Group series, which highlights the new Colorado. You can still vote for your favorites. We won't be closing the voting on our Super Bowl page, so while the winners and losers are correct as of this writing, it's entirely possible that there could be some changes in the rankings as time goes on. So, without any further ado, here are the winning ads based on your voting. Nissan: With Dad Fiat: Ready For Action Jeep: Beautiful Lands BMW: Newfangled Idea Mercedes-Benz: Fable NASCAR: America Start Your Engines As for those ads that failed to impact you, loyal readers, Toyota was the absolute, undisputed loser. The Japanese brand ran four ads in total – two for Toyota and two for Lexus – and all of them have negative tallies as of this writing. Lexus' Make Some Noise and Lets Play and Toyota's One Bold Choice and My Bold Dad both had very weak showings among the commercials that aired, although they weren't alone. Neither Mazda nor Kia scored particularly well, despite featuring celebrity magic act Penn and Teller and former James Bond, Pierce Brosnan, respectively. Chevrolet was the winner of the losers, as of our writing, recording the fewest downvotes for its audience-punking The Big Game ad. If you want to take a second look at the losing ads, you can head back to our Super Bowl page for the complete collection. But for now, head into Comments and let us know what you think of the results.
First BMW i8 in US sells for $825,000
Mon, Aug 18 2014Here are some numbers. The standard BMW i8 starts at starts at $135,700. The first i8 in the US was auctioned off at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this past weekend and the auctioneers, Gooding & Company, said before the gavel was lifted the fist time that they expected the i8 with unique Frozen Grey Metallic and other upgrades to raise between $150,000 and $200,000 for the Pebble Beach Company Foundation. Turns out, the car eventually sold for $825,000 to an unnamed buyer. Along with the honor of having the first i8 on these shores, the special plug-in hybrid comes with Dalbergia Brown leather upholstery, a set of Louis Vuitton luggage and something called a "professional edition" charging station along with laser headlights (subject to regulator approval). A number of other i8s were delivered to a few wealthy car shoppers who managed to make their way to Pebble Beach over the weekend, including automotive guru Roger Penske and Nest CEO Tony Fadell. The special edition was presented at the auction by Jay Leno and BMW North America president and CEO, Ludwig Willisch. You can't put a price on that. Just kidding. You can, and it's apparently $825,000.
History of BMW touring cars looks splendid in Adrenalin trailer
Wed, 15 Oct 2014More high-quality documentaries about the history of motorsports are always welcome. When thinking about racing, we generally focus on moving forward to go a little faster or shave a tenth of a second off a lap. There's not much time to look backward. It's too bad, because there are so many fantastic stories from the sport's history. Thankfully, an upcoming doc is taking on the challenge of telling some of these tales, and it looks like a movie not to miss, especially for BMW fans.
Adrenalin - The BMW Touring Car Story mixes high-quality, vintage footage with new interviews from many of the drivers of these machines to craft what looks like a fantastic experience. Covering the period from the '60s to the modern DTM era, just the trailer shows racing from the 2002, 3.0 CSL and of course the E30 chassis M3 of the '80s. You also get to hear from legends behind the wheel like Hans-Joachim Stuck, Johnny Cecotto and Joachim Winkelhock telling their stories.
Adrenalin comes out in November on DVD, Blu-Ray and on-demand. Check out its trailer above for a taste at what it's aiming for. The documentary definitely looks like one to watch.
