Welcome to my listing for my latest 2002 restoration. My 8th 2002 restoration and my first automatic 2002. I've also restored a '71 BMW 2800CS. Check out vinatgebmwlivedotcom

RARE 1972 BMW 2002 Automatic... they didn't make a lot of roundie automatics and even less with a sunroof. This particular 02 does have salvage title... although this shouldn't be too much of a concern. At sometime in the past it was hit in the rear... before my purchase. Often insurance companies will salvage a vehicle not really knowing the true collector value of the vehicle. I am assuming this was the case with this 02 or it was so long ago that the collector value wasn't there yet??

Anyway, as I said, it was hit in the rear and repaired before I purchased it. The repair was so so and I had it repaired better when I had the car stripped and prepped for paint. I do have pictures of before & during the restoration process. There was some rust issues to contend with (typically) and they were taken care of (some new metal welded in where necessary). All the wheel towers are good with new  under coating, the undercarriage is in good condition but no undercoating was used there. An undercarriage detail might be in order to match the beauty of the rest of the car. I think the pictures will speak for them selves but if not... here are the details of this restoration:

New paint w/ clear coat, all newly polished aluminum moldings, re-chromed back bumper w/ new rubber, new sunroof seal, re-chromed 2002 emblem, new BMW roundels (front & back), new license plate rear lights, new trunk seal, new front windshield, new front windshield seal, new windshield aluminum chrome molding (front & back), re-chromed taillight bezels, newly restore front grills, new front yellow side markers, new elephant skin back trunk boards, new gutter rail aluminum moldings. Interior; new door panels, newly custom stitched dash, new headliner, new sunroof crank and backing, new sun visor clips, newly cover backseat window base, new automatic tranny console w/ new brushes (light works), new coco mats. Engine; new brake master (brakes are good), new battery, electronic ignition, new spark plugs, new oil service, the engine runs great!!  I notice a big difference between the manual and the automatic. The pro to the automatic is it cruises at 70-75 nicely where the 4 speed manual is winding out (4000 rpms) at 65. The automatic is a much nicer road trip car. The con is it's pretty slow off the line. The tranny is in excellent condition with all 3 speeds working great. The hubcaps have been re-polished and look better than new w/ new roundel cap stickers. Brand new 185 70 13 tires, excellent spare with jack and crank.

I'm sure there's more but hard to remember every little thing. This has been a 6 month restoration and in the end I am VERY happy how this 02 came out.  Keep in mind, if this was not salvage title, my reserve would be a lot higher than it currently is. Note: I do have this 02 advertised elsewhere so I do reserve the right to end the auction early...

Please contact me to ask any questions. I am displaying a lot of photos but I have more that can be sent per your request. A $1,000 deposit will be required within 24 hours of winning bid. Full payment due per arrangement will be required 48 hours after winning bid. Anyone without a good ebay rating, please contact me before bidding. If possible, come see and drive this 02 in person. I am located in Laguna Beach, CA and welcome your visit within the 7 day auction period. Thank you for bidding and good luck...

BMW M3 gets the video retrospective treatment

Mon, 10 Jun 2013

With BMW on the cusp of pulling back the sheets on its next-generation M3 (or should we say, M4?), the crew from Electric Federal has taken it upon themselves to give us a generation-by-generation look at the evolution of the most renowned of BMW's sports coupes. The video below features plenty of beautiful shots of each generation of M3, starting with the ever lust-worthy E30 before finishing up with the current iteration. BWS Motorsport's Mark Norris provides the narration, complete with a brief synopsis of what makes each generation so special.
As usual, the clip is fit for big-screen viewing. You can watch the action below for yourself. Meanwhile, we'll be busy figuring out which vital organs we can sell to get our hands on our own E30 M3.

Thanks to smaller engines, vehicle dependability falls for first time in 16 years

Fri, Feb 14 2014

As automakers have made engines smaller and smaller to improve fuel economy, problems in those vehicles have gotten bigger and bigger. That's the synopsis of a J.D. Power vehicle-dependability study, which found that dependability dropped for the first time in 16 years, largely because the proliferation of four-cylinder engines is causing the vehicles to be less reliable. Specifically, the number of problems per 100 vehicles (or what J.D. Power calls PP100) during the past 12 months for 2011 model-year vehicles rose six percent from the year-earlier figures for 2010 model-year cars. Singling out four-cylinder vehicles revealed about a 10-percent increase in problems during the past year. This issues largely related to engine hesitation, rough transmission shifting and lack of power, signaling the inability of vehicle makers to iron out some of the problems in their smaller engines as they strove for better fuel economy. Six- and five-cylinder engines proved far more reliable. Among car brands, BMW's Mini sub-brand came out as least reliable, with 185 problems per 100 vehicles during the past year. Toyota's Lexus badge was easily the most reliable, with just 68 problems per 100 vehicles. Coming in second place was Mercedes-Benz. The overall average was 133. Check out J.D. Power's press release below. J.D. Power Reports: Increased Engine and Transmission Problems Contribute to Decline in Vehicle Dependability for The First Time in More Than 15 Years General Motors Company Receives Eight Segment Awards, While Toyota Motor Corporation Garners Seven and Honda Motor Company Earns Six WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.: o Owners of 3-year-old vehicles (2011 model year) report more problems than did owners of 3-year-old vehicles last year, according to the J.D. Power 2014 U.S. Vehicle Dependability StudySM (VDS) released today. The study, now in its 25th year, examines problems experienced during the past 12 months by original owners of 2011 model-year vehicles. Overall dependability is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality. The study finds that overall vehicle dependability averages 133 PP100, a 6 percent increase in problems from 126 PP100 in 2013. This marks the first time since the 1998 study that the average number of problems has increased. "Until this year, we have seen a continual improvement in vehicle dependability," said David Sargent, vice president of global automotive at J.D.

2014 BMW Z4 sDrive35is

Tue, 14 May 2013

The BMW Z3/Z4 roadster has never really had a widespread following because it has either been too humble and small a roadster (albeit with some fun and very low-volume M editions) or it has been - in this E89 generation - too casual an image leader with no racier aspirations. The current 480-hp Z4 GTEs don't count, since they are as stock a Z4 as today's Pamela Anderson is the same blonde actress we knew as Heidi on Home Improvement. You know, sort of like those ever-so-slightly modified Toyota Camry coupes competing in NASCAR.
The ultimate highpoint for the BMW Z roadster franchise was at the very start of its life in the mid-90s, in the James Bond film GoldenEye with Pierce Brosnan. The Stinger missiles that Q's team installed behind the Z3's headlights were never fired, and BMW never even offered this self-defense package as an option. Yet another case of the ol' bait and switch.
And in all these subsequent years of Z3s and Z4s strutting their long-hooded stuff, the little sporting Bimmer could really have used a live Stinger missile or two to spice things up. The current Z4 exists, it is pretty dang sexy, and BMW seems content to let it linger there. We just drove the new midlife version of the roadster near BMW headquarters in Munich, and it served to reinforce our feelings.
