1971 Bmw 2002 Roadster - M20 6 Cylinder Conversion By Pete Mchenry on 2040-cars
Winston-Salem, North Carolina, United States
This 1971 2002 is the first customer BMW conversion performed by Pete McHenry, a well known BMW engine builder and my late father. Pete was highly regarded in the BMWCCA community, where he served as a Tech advisor for almost 20 years and built many dominant Club Racing engines for customers all over the country. The engine in this car is a euro E21 323i M20 6 cylinder coupled to a 4 speed gearbox. The customer, Randy Bennet, purchased the car in the 1980's with the roof already removed. Randy then brought the car to Jack Sumey, owner of Jack's Customs, a North Carolina tuning shop. There, Jack installed the widebody, smoothed the bumpers, and shaved the door handles. The majority of the bodywork is composite and further cuts weight from the roadster configuration. The paint is a large-flake, pearl white. Recently, Jack chopped the windshield 4" and had the BMW glass cut at Pfaff's, a well known local glass cutter. He also installed a Miata header panel so that a top can be framed and installed. The Miata latches are included. The suspension setup is unknown, but it does sit on adjustable coilovers with aftermarket sway bars. There is a stout 6-point roll bar installed by Craig Phelps to recover stiffness and add to the safety of the topless 02, along with front and rear strut braces. The period HRE multi-piece wheels are a real bonus, and add to the vintage feel. This car is a very cool time capsule of the 1980s tuning style that could be a real performer with a little more work. The chassis is rust-free from what I have been able to photograph; the only apparent rust being surface spots on the unfinished interior. The car starts and runs fine and has recently been driven with no issues. There are no cracks in the dashboard. The wiper motor works but there are no arms. A new owner may want to reupholster the seats, add door panels, and marine carpet, but it is good as is. A very fun car to drive. Next-generation BMW 5 Series spied in Touring trim
Wed, 10 Jul 2013It almost seems as if BMW just started selling the current-generation 5 Series, yet one of our spy photographers has already spotted a next-generation prototype in Touring form. Little is known about the luxury wagon in this early stage of testing, but it is expected to weigh much less than the current car, which, in 528i Touring guise with an automatic transmission, tips the scale at over 3,800 pounds. It is also expected to have the latest in driver-assistance technology. Despite the weight savings, and judging from the photos, it looks to have proportions similar to the current car, but don't expect the makeshift headlight and taillight clusters to make it onto the production model.
The crucial question for potential Touring customers in the United States is whether BMW will do the unexpected and import it here. The company's track record indicates that it will be sold in Rest of World markets only, but we're hoping that the next 5 Series will end the Touring's U.S. hiatus (and the 5 Series Gran Turismo's reign), which began in 2003 at the end of the E39 generation.
BMW X4 M40i spotted testing in Germany
Mon, 04 Aug 2014The stream of segment-busting BMW variants is showing no signs of letting up, and with the latest addition now upon us, questions have been circulating as to whether the Bavarian automaker would do an M version of the new X4 crossover. The jury may still be out on that proposition, but the latest intel suggests that, while a full-on X4 M may not be in the cards, a next-best-thing X4 M40i is in the works. And that appears to be what we're looking at in this fresh batch of spy shots.
Spotted for the first time undergoing testing in Germany, this X4 is tipped to be the next addition to the M Performance line that's already given us near-boiling models like the M135i and M235i on the one hand and the diesel-powered M550d, X5 M50d and X6 M50d on the other. Power in this case is tipped to come from the same 3.0-liter turbo six as the upcoming M2, producing between 360 and 380 horsepower.
Unlike the current top-of-that-specific-line X4 35i, which has two tailpipes on one side, this partially-camouflaged prototype has one pipe protruding from each corner of the rear bumper, but looks like it could easily accommodate twin pipes on both sides. Expect commensurate suspension, brake, rolling stock, aero and trim upgrades to come as part of the package, though they likely won't be quite as substantial as those applied to the X5 M and X6 M.
Autoblog Minute: UAW and FCA avoid strike, Clarkson teases new show
Fri, Oct 9 2015FCA avoids a worker strike, a former Top Gear host teases us with a picture from Amazon's new car show, and Toyota predicts autonomous cars by 2020. Autoblog senior editor Greg Migliore reports on this edition of Autoblog Minute Weekly Recap. Show full video transcript text [00:00:00] FCA avoids a worker strike, a former Top Gear host teases us with a picture from Amazon's new car show, and Toyota predicts autonomous cars by 2020. I'm senior editor Greg Migliore and this is your Autoblog Minute Weekly Recap. A UAW strike of FCA was avoided thanks to a zero-hour tentative agreement reached this week. Worker concerns that were renegotiated in the new [00:00:30] deal include adjustments to the two-tier wage scale, health care costs, and production outsourcing. Now check-in with Autoblog as we update our reports on this evolving story. Shooting began on Amazon Prime's new automotive show starring the former Top Gear crew. That's Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May. Now Clarkson threw out a tweet from day one of filming on location at Algarve Motor Park in Portugal. The picture features the show's [00:01:00] three stars and crew posing with the holy trinity of hyper cars. That's a McLaren P1, a Ferrari LaFerrari, and a Porsche 918 Spyder. This Prime show is being called Gear Knobs though the name is unofficial. Now if a tweet is any indication of what we can expect, who cares what it's called this is gonna be awesome. (Eds Note: Clarkson tweeted Friday that the show will not be called Gear Knobs.) Toyota predicts drivers could be obsolete on highways as early as 2020, with technology dubbed the Toyota Highway Teammate or THT. Toyota is using a modified [00:01:30] Lexus GS to show what this is capable of. THT is already able to create a driverless freeway car that's capable of changing lanes, making passes and taking curves. Plus, it can keep safe distances from other vehicles. Toyota is currently testing this on Tokyo's Shuto Expressway. Those are the highlights from the week that was. Be sure to check out my full recap this Saturday. And I'll have some added insight on the BMW M4 GTS. For Autoblog, I'm Greg Migliore. [00:02:00] Show Logo Autoblog Minute is a short-form video news series reporting on all things automotive.
