A high-performance Aston Martin DB11 is on the way

Mon, Feb 20 2017

It was only a matter of time before Aston Martin prepped a hotter version of its DB11. The British Automaker did the same for the DB9 with the DBS, as well as the Vanquish, Rapide, and Vantage so a performance model Aston is as predictable as an AMG anything from Mercedes-Benz. And from the looks of it, this extra-potent DB11, which we'll call DB11 S, will follow the same formula of more power, and aggressive exterior upgrades. Most noticeable is the mega-sized maw at the front. There's a bit of white-painted mesh to break up the front grille, but it's still clear that the opening has expanded all the way down to the front spoiler. That spoiler has been changed as well, featuring points on each side instead of one big arch. Moving around to the side, the slender vent that extends from the wheel arch on the standard DB11 has been exchanged for something larger. It's shaped very differently as well, looking a bit like a shark's tooth or a Star Fleet badge from Star Trek. At the back is another significant change. The rear bumper now features a clearly functional diffuser for improved aerodynamics. Vents appear around the exhaust tips, too. However, the ducktail spoiler appears unchanged, as does the rest of the rear. There are a couple of interesting details inside as well. This prototype is fitted with Recaro race seats, which are pretty neat, but will likely be replaced with cushier, leather-wrapped seats developed by Aston. Just behind the seats is something even more fascinating. This DB11S has a roll cage. It's hard to say if this is just a one-off for the prototype, or if it will make it to production. Certainly other companies, such as Porsche, have offered roll cages in production cars. But in the case of Porsche, they've only been included on the most hardcore sports cars. However, we're not sure this Aston is the same type of track-focused car that Porsche's caged examples are. View 11 Photos As a bonus, we also have more photos of the upcoming DB11 Volante, due spring of next year. It's still sporting the '80s-grade shoulder pads to hide its haunches, but the rest of the car is pretty well exposed. Naturally, the little air scoop behind the rear quarter windows was lost with the switch to a soft top, but we expect everything under the fake steel panels will be very similar to the coupe, just like the rest of the car. Aston Martin values electric propulsion over downsizing

Tue, Jun 2 2015

Not even small-volume manufacturers are being exempt from the automotive industry's pursuit of higher efficiency and lower emissions. At present, that means either electric propulsion (whether in part or in whole) or downsizing conventional engines, and for Aston Martin, the future apparently lines in the former. "I see in our future obviously V12s, V8s and probably battery-electric cars," Aston's CEO Palmer revealed to Autocar. "As time evolves, there's probably an inevitability to hybridisation, simply because, car by car, you can only downsize so much. I'd rather put a hybrid in there than an in-line four-cylinder." So just how does the company envision implementing electric or hybrid propulsion? "Imagine something like a 4x4, 1,000-bhp silent Rapide. I think 'Power, Beauty, Soul' doesn't say it has to be a gasoline engine. It just needs to be really powerful, really beautiful and set your heart on fire," Palmer explained. "I'd argue that 1,000 bhp on the ground would probably do that for you. So that's the route we could go." The British automaker demonstrated the DBX concept with an all-wheel-drive electric powertrain at the Geneva Motor Show a few months ago, and is currently in the process of revitalizing and expanding its current product range. Of course Aston isn't the only high-end niche automaker faced with the decision to either downsize or add hybrid propulsion. Ferrari is taking both approaches, using smaller turbocharged engines in its V8 models and moving towards hybrids with its V12s. Porsche offers an array of plug-in hybrids and is in the process of downsizing and turbocharging its naturally aspirated engines. Pagani switched from a big V12 in the Zonda to a smaller turbo V8 in the Huayra. Bugatti is expected to use electric turbochargers in its Veyron successor. And Lamborghini was recently reported to be considering a turbo five for the Huracan.

Aston uses DB11 canvas to show what Q can do for you

Thu, Feb 23 2017

Aston Martin is putting greater emphasis on its bespoke Q division, which creates and builds one-off designs. At this year's Geneva Motor Show, Aston is bringing a prime example of what Q can do for you. The beautiful Zaffre Blue DB11 shown here showcases Q. The paint is complemented by exposed carbon-fiber details on the front splitter, side sills, rear diffuser, side strakes, hood vents, and door mirrors. Carbon fiber is also on the wheel center caps and under the hood on the engine cover. Inside the DB11, the Obsidian Black leather interior features Q logos embossed on the seats and a four-piece set of color-matched luggage in the trunk. While the company's claim of "almost limitless opportunities" to create a customer's perfect car may be hyperbole, Q's reach goes far beyond simply picking paint or leather colors from a big list or design book. Porsche, McLaren, Ferrari, and other high end brands also offer programs similar to Aston's. A customer who commissions Q to build a car will be able to choose from a range of unique leather quilt upholstery patterns, body-color matching wheels, and a choice of new wood or leather interiors. Aston equates the choices to that of a tailor or a custom yacht builder, with each car built to a customer's specific desires. These customers work with specialists from Q to design their bespoke vehicle. If you have the means, Q can probably make it happen. The DB11 will sit alongside the new Aston Martin Vanquish S and the AM-RB 001 hypercar that was co-developed with Red Bull Racing in Aston's stand this year. Related Video:
