Aston Martin shows electric Rapide, production possible in two years

Thu, Oct 22 2015

Aston Martin is working with investment firm ChinaEquity to bring an all-electric version of the Rapide to production by the end of 2017. Aston received 50 million British pounds ($77 million) from ChinaEquity for development, according to Automotive News Europe. The model could have as much as 1,000 horsepower, which makes sense because its powertrain will be developed by an affiliate of the Williams Formula One team. Aston Martin also says an electric variant of its DBX SUV may be in the works by 2019. The electric Rapide could also have a 200-mile single-charge range, though the car may be priced at as much as $250,000. Aston Martin first announced plans to build the model earlier this year. The automaker launched the Rapide in 2010. Related Video: The video meant to be presented here is no longer available. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Continuation Aston Martin DB4 GTs unleashed at Silverstone track day

Thu, May 3 2018

The first customers for the Aston Martin DB4 GT continuation cars have now gotten to experience track time in them. Aston arranged a customer track day at Silverstone, with five continuation GTs stretching their legs on the legendary circuit. The continuation cars are a 25-car run built by Newport Pagnell's Aston Martin Works, after the original 1959 recipe. The manufacturer has dedicated a two-year international track driving program for the cars, and the next event after Silverstone will be the Rockingham circuit in the UK on June 21. The third track day will take place in Le Mans on July 27 — more tracks will be announced later. The events have driving trainers to instruct DB4 GT owners about handling their cars the way they are supposed to, or as Aston's press release puts it: "They will help customers master driving techniques from an era when track driving was more art than science." Well put. One of the instructors is Aston Martin Racing driver Darren Turner, three-time Le Mans class winner. If you can't quite swing it to get yourself a real continuation Aston, there's also a more modern opportunity waiting to be seized: a DB5 replica based on — of all things — a Honda S2000. As its dimensions are just a bit off, the car seems to be a cross between The Car and a David Brown Speedback, and it retains the S2000 interior. The asking price is an eye-watering $95,000, which is still a lot less than a continuation DB4 GT. Aston Martin bringing two surprises to Pebble Beach

Fri, Aug 5 2022

Aston Martin has at least three treats planned for its "strongest-ever presence" at this month's Pebble Beach shindig. Two are surprises, including a "very special, ultra-exclusive" vehicle that will celebrate the first decade of the company's Q by Aston Martin personalization service. The department that turns individual taste into automotive reality has done something said to "encapsulate the brand’s winning track bloodline, with a nod to success at the 24 Hours of Le Mans." We don't know what the model will be based on. Some muse it could be another limited-run special like the V12 Speedster DBR1. The cynic in us won't be surprised to find a DBX with special colorways, leather embossing and checkered flag motifs resting on a northern California plinth.   The second surprise is a "high performance model" — as if Aston Martin makes anything else — that will go into series production, expected to be the V12 Vantage Roadster. The coupe dropped in March, a wild sendoff to the littlest 12-cylinder, front-engine sports car in the company's lineup and the last Vantage to get the twin-turbo 5.2-liter V12. The note about series production wouldn't mean unlimited production, though. There will be only 333 examples of the V12 Vantage, Roadster numbers could be even further restricted. Whatever it is, this one's going to be revealed on Friday, August 19 at the English maker's private Aston Martin Club 1913 that's been relocated to provide a better view of the lawn during the Concours.  The final goody is an update on the progress of the Valhalla, the mid-engined hybrid supercar with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and three electric motors producing 937 hp and 738 lb-ft. We hear there will be a mockup of the revised interior that potential buyers will be able to sit in, experiencing the driver-focused, F1-like seating arrangements. Assuming nothing has changed since the Valhalla prototype exterior made its U.S. debut at last year's Pebble Beach, the coupe will be limited to 999 examples, first deliveries planned for just two years from now.
