Aston Martin Vanquish S gets harder, better, faster
Wed, Nov 16 2016Now in its second generation, the Aston Martin Vanquish has finally earned a red "S" badge. That means a subtle revamp of the Vanquish's shape, speed, suspension, and interior specification to separate the new coupe from both the previous model and the new hotness, the incoming DB11. A meaner front fascia and a racy rear diffuser, both in exposed carbon fiber, reduce frontal lift. The new black quad exhaust pipes tucked into triangular cutouts just look mean. For those who want to go further, the already considerable option sheet gets new elements like carbon-fiber engine louvers and a new diamond-turned wheel design. Aston Martin also talks up an array of "striking painted graphics packs," which likely lean toward the subtle sky blue accents in the car pictured above as opposed to a purple and yellow Indy Pace Car package. The 6.0-liter V12 adds 12 horsepower for a total of 580. Larger inlet manifolds and a freer-breathing intake bestow finer throttle response for an anxious right foot. The eight-speed Touchtronic III gearbox adds refinement at the same time as it swaps cogs more quickly than before. Changes made throughout the suspension, from spring rates to damper internals, should do the trick when driving calls for more hammer than velvet. Not that you need to drive anywhere in the Vanquish S to enjoy it fully, since the cockpit is a reward unto itself. Chopped carbon fiber drenched in a satin sheen comprises the waterfall center console, in high-tech brutalist contrast to the new "Filograph" quilted seats in Bridge of Weir leather. One unsubtle aspect of the Vanquish S: the $294,950 price for the coupe, and a cool $312,950 for the Volante. Deliveries commence in December. Aston Martin shows what it does best with V8 Vantage GT, DB9 Carbon Edition
Fri, Apr 18 2014Aston Martin shocked us when it announced at the 2014 New York Auto Show that 2015 V8 Vantage GT (pictured above) was priced at $99,900. While hardly inexpensive, a sub-$100k Aston seemed like a bargain. It was joined by the unveiling of the DB9 Carbon Edition that mixed sport and luxury in the brand's traditional style. The Vantage GT is available as a coupe, or for a little bit more money, as a convertible. Regardless of body, buyers get a 4.7-liter V8 with 430 horsepower and 361 pound-feet of torque, and that power is routed through a seven-speed automated manual with magnesium paddle shifters or a traditional six-speed manual. Even for a 'cheap' Aston, the GT still offers luxury features like Alcantara trim, carbon fiber doorsill plates and seats from the V12 Vantage S. The one on display in New York wears one of the optional motorsports-inspired graphics packs that add contrasting paint around the grille, mirror caps, rear diffuser blade and roof pillar. The $199,995 DB9 Carbon Edition packs a 6.0-liter V12 rated at 510 hp and 457 lb-ft and a six-speed automatic transmission. Available as Carbon Black or Carbon White, the package adds carbon fiber side strakes and taillight trim. Buyers who want even more can add a carbon fiber front splitter, rear diffuser and mirror caps. Black leather covers the interior, and the shade of the contrasting stitching comes from that of the brake calipers. Deliveries for both models start in the third quarter. Scroll down to get the full scoop on them. Aston Martin Launches Two New Special Editions at New York ? The great British sports car marque, now in its 101st year, is debuting a bold addition to its iconic V8 Vantage range as well as dramatic new special edition variants of the timeless DB9, underlining the company's ability to create cars that sit apart from the mainstream.
Aston Martin to keep the faith with V12, manual transmission
Wed, Mar 11 2015Downsized engines and dual-clutch transmissions may be the way the industry is heading, but Aston Martin is more deeply rooted in the past than most. Which could explain – at least in part – why the British automaker is planning on sticking with V12 engines and manual transmissions for the foreseeable future. After speaking with Aston's new chief executive Andy Palmer at the Geneva Motor Show last week, Car and Driver reports that Gaydon is in no rush to get rid of the building blocks that have made it what it is today. And that means continuing to evolve its VH architecture, twelve-cylinder engine and six-speed manual gearbox. The company is working to develop a new platform and is collaborating on a new twin-turbo V8 with Mercedes-AMG. But those are still several years out, and Aston doesn't plan to wait that long before rolling out new models. Before the new AMG-powered Vantage is ready, C/D reports that Aston will introduce the replacement for the DB9 that will still be based on the VH platform and pack an evolution of the company's ubiquitous and long-serving 6.0-liter V12. "That platform was definitely far ahead of its time," Palmer told C/D. "It should have been described as a modular architecture, like [VW's] MQB or one of the other systems big manufacturers have adopted. We're always making excuses about it being an old platform, but if you were to compare the original VH platform to today's there's an enormous transformation. And it's a great way to build cars in the volumes that we do." The platform and the engine aren't the only old-school technologies Palmer is intent to keep. While Ferrari and Lamborghini do away with the manual altogether, and even Porsche goes PDK-only on the 911 GT3 and GT3 RS, Aston isn't giving up its clutch pedal any time soon. "I would love to be the last car manufacturer providing stick shifts in the U.S.," said Palmer. "That's my hope, we will keep the faith." Of course part of that could come down to Aston not having a dual-clutch transmission to offer, while its antiquated sequential gearbox lags behind the times. But it will likely gain access to Mercedes transmissions along with the engine deal.
