With regret I must part ways with a old friend... I've had this 74 Alfa Spider in storage for several years, waiting for the day to finish its restoration. I no longer have the time or what it takes to see this great car through to the completion it deserves, so I hope it goes to a home where its potential can be fully realized. This California car was originally owned by a schoolteacher buddy of my father's, who then sold it to my dad in about 1984. It's been in our family ever since... my dad drove it for several years in the SF Bay Area on his commute to work, etc, and even to Oklahoma and back one summer. After he retired he offered the car to me, and I enjoyed the car for much of the mid 1990's, but only as an occasional driver. During my time driving the car I worked on several maintenance/performance upgrade items: new radiator, hoses, belts, Spica injection pump cold start actuator, complete cylinder head job, water pump, new clutch & pressure plate, new clutch master cylinder, new brakes/rotors, a new convertible top, a roll bar. Just before the car quit running I had the 5 speed tranny completely rebuilt with "gear lightening" to improve shifting response ($1500.), and installed a new header-back Ansa exhaust. These two items have virtually no mileage on them.

The 1974 model year is coveted as the last year with the low-profile european stainless bumpers, and the Spica mechanical fuel injection pump prior to more extensive smog control equipment. 2000cc DOHC motor. Some owners choose to convert to dual side-draft Weber carbs, others prefer to stick with the original Spica system. The last time this car was driven, all gauges worked, and it has always been a blast to drive with great throttle response and acceleration. The first owner of the car installed a performance camshaft.

The car has been in garage storage for 12 years, and has not been run or driven. It will need extensive preparation prior to driving, as would any car that's been in long term storage. Also, this car is far from perfect, it shows typical wear and tear from it's years as a daily driver, and was not garaged for the middle 15 years of it's life, so the original paint is weathered. The seats are in good condition, original rubber floor mats and trunk liner are serviceable. Dashboard intact, with typical sun cracks near vents. Original magnesium wheels, with full size spare and factory jack. Have black vinyl boot for convertible top, and car cover included.

Additionally, there are several items that need to be addressed. The car is not running. It quit with what seemed like a fuel/ignition or timing problem the last time it was driven in about 2001. At the time I was the father of two small kids in a young family, and had no time to seriously troubleshoot the issue, so it sat in my driveway until I put it into long term storage. Not sure what it will take to get it started again. The tires are old and cracked, and I would not drive on them due to their age. The driver's side floorboard had extensive rust, so I cut out all corroded metal. It needs a new driver's side floorpan; someone with metal shaping and welding experience will need to make the repair. The convertible top has a cracked rear plastic window... unfortunately I damaged it when forcing the top back into the closed position following a night of sub-freezing temperature, so the plastic window was stiff and less flexible, and it cracked when I latched the top. No major body work issues... but there are the typical pits, etc. from road debris hitting the nose of the car. The passenger door has a parking lot dent ... not serious but is visible if you sight along the right side. Also, a bit of corrosion under the right rear chrome trim piece between the trunk lid and the convertible top - minor fix. Any of these minor body issues will need to be taken care of prior to a new paint job, which the car really needs. The radio doesn't work... it never did for me and I never attempted to fix it, but I suspect it's a simple fix.

The odometer reads 06310 (106,310), and I believe that to be accurate based on much of the car's history as either a short-distance commuter, or sitting for long periods of time. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. This car is a timeless classic, with Italian style that turns heads. With some TLC it has a lot of life left to give. I hope it finds a new owner who will restore it to its former glory and enjoy driving it as much as I have!

NOTE: Car is presently stored in Southern Oregon, and will need to be shipped to buyer's location. Buyer to pay cost of shipping. Details to be mutually agreed upon by seller and buyer.

Stellantis reveals STLA Large platform with EV and ICE support

Fri, Jan 19 2024

Hot on the heels of a Jeep Wagoneer S teaser and photos of the prototype next-generation Dodge Charger (or Challenger), comes a reveal and details of what will likely underpin both of them: the STLA Large platform. It's one of multiple Stellantis flexible architectures that will be the basis of its upcoming electric cars, and apparently internal combustion ones, too. Stellantis says the STLA Large platform will be for D- and E-segment cars, crossovers and SUVs. In other words, it will be for midsize and large vehicles. For reference, lengths supported will be from 187.6 to 201.8 inches, and width will range from 74.7 to 79.9 inches. It will be highly flexible, too, with Stellantis claiming significant amounts of adjustability in overhangs, wheelbase, suspension placement and powertrain arrangement. The powertrain flexibility is quite impressive. Front-, rear- and all-wheel-drive layouts will be supported. Single- and dual-motor layouts will be on offer. Internal combustion will be available, too, either on its own or as a hybrid. Apparently engines can be fitted either longitudinally or transversely, too. Battery packs with between 85 and 118 kWh of capacity will be offered, with Stellantis claiming that sedan-style vehicles could have a range of up to 500 miles. The packs will also be available in 400- and 800-volt designs. Stellantis noted also that the platform can "easily accept future energy storage technologies when they reach production readiness." This seems to hint that the company is looking at different battery chemistries and maybe even solid-state batteries that could be added more easily in the future. Furthermore, the platform is designed to handle impressive output. Stellantis says that some models on the platform will have 0-to-62 mph times in the 2-second range. Limited-slip differentials for improved power delivery and wheel-end disconnects for reduced mechanical drag are also on the table for this platform. All of these details fit well with the information previously given for the concept Dodge Charger Daytona Banshee and Jeep Wagoneer S. The former was previewed with both battery voltage architectures and a wide range of electric powertrains with between 456 and 670 horsepower depending on specification and upgrades. And that's just for the 400-volt system; the 800-volt option wasn't detailed. We've also seen photos of the Charger chassis seemingly with provisions for gas engines, likely versions of the Hurricane I6.

2023 Alfa Romeo Giulia Estrema bridges the Quadrifoglio gap

Mon, Mar 28 2022

Alfa Romeo is expanding the 2023 Giulia range with a model named Estrema that was developed for driving enthusiasts. Also available on the 2023 Stelvio, the Estrema trim level bridges the gap between the Veloce variants of both cars and the high-performance Quadrifoglio. "Estrema" is Italian for "extreme," and in this case it denotes a car that — in Alfa Romeo's words — was designed for "a connoisseur of driving." The list of standard features grows with the addition of a limited-slip rear differential and the adaptive Alfa Active Suspension system for both comfort and performance. These updates may not sound major, but they should make a perceptible difference on the kind of twisty roads that the Estrema models were created for. Car-spotters will be able to pick out the Estrema versions in a crowded parking lot by looking for carbon fiber exterior accents (including the piece of trim that underlines the grille), specific wheels that measure 19 inches on the Giulia and 21 inches on the Stelvio, dark "Estrema" emblems and black brake calipers. Inside, there's more carbon fiber, red contrast stitching and a blend of leather and Alcantara upholstery.  The Estrema models aren't any more estrema under the hood than the versions that they're based on. The only engine available in the United States is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged to deliver 280 horsepower and 306 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel-drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission come standard on the Giulia, though Alfa Romeo's Q4 all-wheel-drive system is available at an extra cost, and the Stelvio is exclusively offered with all-wheel-drive. With the Q4 system, the Giulia reaches 60 mph from a stop in 5.1 seconds. On sale now, Alfa Romeo's Estrema models are scheduled to reach dealers across the nation in the third quarter of 2022. Buyers have four colors to choose from: Alfa White, Alfa Rosso, Misano Blue, and Vulcano Black. Pricing is set at $56,685 for the rear-wheel-drive Giulia, $58,685 for the all-wheel-drive model, and $60,545 for the Stelvio. Note that these figures include a mandatory $1,595 destination charge. Buyers resent low inventories, prices over MSRP, study says

Tue, Nov 15 2022

Vehicle inventory low, vehicle transaction prices high, customers fretting … welcome, J.D. Power, to the era of supply and demand. In a recently published survey from one of the auto industryÂ’s top analytical firms, findings show that customers' satisfaction with vehicle purchases in the United States this year has dipped for the first time in 10 years. The 2022 U.S. Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) Study found that overall sales satisfaction has dropped to 786 (on a 1,000-point scale) from 789 in 2021. In that year, higher than expected trade-in values softened the effect of new vehicle price increases. But in 2022, on top of trade-in prices shrinking, many dealers elected to charge more than the ManufacturerÂ’s Suggested Retail Price, a factor that did not sit well with buyers. “When dealers charge more than MSRP, particularly with long-term loyal customers, they risk a potential long-term negative effect on customer advocacy and service business," said Chris Sutton, vice president of automotive retail at J.D. Power. Satisfaction among buyers who paid more than sticker price is 757, while satisfaction among those who paid the sticker price or less is 850, the Power report said. The lack of dealership inventory was also a customer irritant, J.D. Power found, a point that automakers and their dealers may want to consider. Many have maintained, or considered maintaining, a smaller inventory in the wake of the pandemic, keeping costs down and driving more customers toward factory orders. Regarding those consumers shopping for electric vehicles, the survey said that more than a third of them “failed to get instruction on EV charging before they left the dealership, which notably affects satisfaction.” Said Sutton, “Salespeople donÂ’t need to show gas-powered vehicle buyers how to fill their tank, but they do need to show EV buyers how to charge their vehicle.” There are positives to the Power conclusions, however, especially for Alfa Romeo dealers. The Italian brand ranked highest in customer satisfaction among premium brands with a score of 833, with Porsche a very close second (831) and Lexus (819) third. Alfa is on something of a roll these days, with its compact Tonale crossover due for release in the spring, and a new sports car in the works. Meanwhile, in PowerÂ’s “mainstream brand”” segment, Buick ranked first with a score of 825, followed by Dodge (816) and Subaru (804), all performing higher than the industry average.
