With regret I must part ways with a old friend... I've had this 74 Alfa Spider in storage for several years, waiting for the day to finish its restoration. I no longer have the time or what it takes to see this great car through to the completion it deserves, so I hope it goes to a home where its potential can be fully realized. This California car was originally owned by a schoolteacher buddy of my father's, who then sold it to my dad in about 1984. It's been in our family ever since... my dad drove it for several years in the SF Bay Area on his commute to work, etc, and even to Oklahoma and back one summer. After he retired he offered the car to me, and I enjoyed the car for much of the mid 1990's, but only as an occasional driver. During my time driving the car I worked on several maintenance/performance upgrade items: new radiator, hoses, belts, Spica injection pump cold start actuator, complete cylinder head job, water pump, new clutch & pressure plate, new clutch master cylinder, new brakes/rotors, a new convertible top, a roll bar. Just before the car quit running I had the 5 speed tranny completely rebuilt with "gear lightening" to improve shifting response ($1500.), and installed a new header-back Ansa exhaust. These two items have virtually no mileage on them.

The 1974 model year is coveted as the last year with the low-profile european stainless bumpers, and the Spica mechanical fuel injection pump prior to more extensive smog control equipment. 2000cc DOHC motor. Some owners choose to convert to dual side-draft Weber carbs, others prefer to stick with the original Spica system. The last time this car was driven, all gauges worked, and it has always been a blast to drive with great throttle response and acceleration. The first owner of the car installed a performance camshaft.

The car has been in garage storage for 12 years, and has not been run or driven. It will need extensive preparation prior to driving, as would any car that's been in long term storage. Also, this car is far from perfect, it shows typical wear and tear from it's years as a daily driver, and was not garaged for the middle 15 years of it's life, so the original paint is weathered. The seats are in good condition, original rubber floor mats and trunk liner are serviceable. Dashboard intact, with typical sun cracks near vents. Original magnesium wheels, with full size spare and factory jack. Have black vinyl boot for convertible top, and car cover included.

Additionally, there are several items that need to be addressed. The car is not running. It quit with what seemed like a fuel/ignition or timing problem the last time it was driven in about 2001. At the time I was the father of two small kids in a young family, and had no time to seriously troubleshoot the issue, so it sat in my driveway until I put it into long term storage. Not sure what it will take to get it started again. The tires are old and cracked, and I would not drive on them due to their age. The driver's side floorboard had extensive rust, so I cut out all corroded metal. It needs a new driver's side floorpan; someone with metal shaping and welding experience will need to make the repair. The convertible top has a cracked rear plastic window... unfortunately I damaged it when forcing the top back into the closed position following a night of sub-freezing temperature, so the plastic window was stiff and less flexible, and it cracked when I latched the top. No major body work issues... but there are the typical pits, etc. from road debris hitting the nose of the car. The passenger door has a parking lot dent ... not serious but is visible if you sight along the right side. Also, a bit of corrosion under the right rear chrome trim piece between the trunk lid and the convertible top - minor fix. Any of these minor body issues will need to be taken care of prior to a new paint job, which the car really needs. The radio doesn't work... it never did for me and I never attempted to fix it, but I suspect it's a simple fix.

The odometer reads 06310 (106,310), and I believe that to be accurate based on much of the car's history as either a short-distance commuter, or sitting for long periods of time. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. This car is a timeless classic, with Italian style that turns heads. With some TLC it has a lot of life left to give. I hope it finds a new owner who will restore it to its former glory and enjoy driving it as much as I have!

NOTE: Car is presently stored in Southern Oregon, and will need to be shipped to buyer's location. Buyer to pay cost of shipping. Details to be mutually agreed upon by seller and buyer.

Alfa Romeo's next GTV could arrive as an electric flagship sedan

Mon, Jun 21 2021

Like every brand under the Stellantis umbrella, Alfa Romeo has until 2030 to prove it deserves to live. It's reportedly planning a major overhaul that could bring the well-known GTV nameplate back to the range on an electric sedan. Newly-minted company boss Jean-Philippe Imparato recently said he's "very interested" in making a modern-day GTV, though he significantly warned nothing was set in stone yet. British magazine Autocar understands that all options remain on the table, and one of them is putting the GTV emblem on a battery-powered sedan with a coupe-like roof line. Simultaneously GT and EV, it would be the Italian firm's answer to the BMW i4, among other sedans. It would slot at the very top of the lineup, at least in terms of price and probably in terms of performance. If the rumor is accurate, it would mark the first time the GTV nameplate appears on a four-door in the Alfa Romeo portfolio. It's been used on a number of models since its introduction on a gorgeous, Bertone-designed coupe in 1965, and they've all had two doors. Alfa Romeo came close to dusting off the GTV nameplate on a two-door version of the Giulia which would have been aimed at the BMW 4 Series and Audi's A5 line. While this strategy would have followed tradition (the original GTV was closely related to the original Giulia), the project was canned at an advanced stage due to a perceived lack of demand. Had it been launched, it would have offered a 50/50 weight distribution and about 600 horsepower. Alfisti who find the idea of an electric, four-door GTV unpalatable shouldn't worry yet. Insiders told Autocar that the nameplate might alternatively make a comeback on hybrid coupe; its fate hasn't been decided yet. Of course, it could also not return and remain in the history book, where it's been since the last GTV retired in 2004. What's seemingly certain is that new Alfa Romeo models are around the corner. One is the production version of the Tonale concept, which was reportedly delayed by Imparato earlier in 2021 due to issues with the hybrid system that will be available at launch. Replacements for the Giulia and the Stelvio are said to be in the pipeline, too.  Related Video: Green Alfa Romeo Electric Future Vehicles Performance Sedan

Alfa Romeo Giulia runs the Nurburgring

Sat, Aug 22 2015

Usually when spying a pre-production car, the goal is to figure out what it looks like underneath the camouflage. However, that's not a concern with his video of a heavily concealed Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio because the design was already fully revealed. Instead, this is an opportunity to listen to the upcoming sports sedan lapping the Nurburgring. For a vehicle with just 2.5 years of development by only 11 people, the Giulia certainly makes all the right noises. The twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine has a growling note as the sedan speeds away, and there's no audible turbo whistle – at least in this clip. The sound is angry but still somewhat subdued for a mill making 510 horsepower. The test driver here is really pushing things, and the tires are squealing through practically every corner. The Alfa's rear end even steps out a little a few times. The Giulia is slated to arrive in the US in the first half of 2016. In the meantime, we look forward to seeing the sedan again at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, where some additional powertrains are rumored to debut. Related Video:

Fiat Chrysler's Q3 profit boosted by strong North American earnings

Tue, Oct 24 2017

MILAN, Italy — Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) reported a 17 percent jump in third-quarter adjusted operating profit on Tuesday, helped by a strong performance in its key North American market and improving operations in Europe and Latin America. The world's seventh-largest carmaker still makes the lion's share of its profits in North America, so improving, or at least maintaining, its margins there is a key focus. The carmaker reported an 8 percent adjusted operating profit margin in the region, up from 7.6 percent a year ago, despite a drop in sales and shipments. "FCA's profitability in North America remained strong in the quarter despite a weakening market there," a Milan-based analyst said. FCA's profitability compares with an 8.3 percent North America margin reached in the quarter by bigger U.S. rival GM , showing CEO Sergio Marchionne making progress towards his goal of closing the margin gap with GM and the company's other U.S. rival, Ford, by 2018. The company's confirmation of its full-year outlook also pushed shares higher, a trader added. The stock was up 2.8 percent by 1129 GMT, outperforming a 1 percent rise in the European auto index. FCA has been retooling some U.S. factories to boost output of sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) and trucks while ending production of some unprofitable sedans to strengthen profitability as the U.S. car market comes off its peak. The company said a drop in North America shipments due to lower fleet sales and discontinued models was partially offset by higher deliveries of Ram trucks and two models from the Alfa Romeo stable: the Stelvio sport utility vehicle and Giulia sedan. Profitability also improved in Europe, helped by sales of the Stelvio and the new Jeep Compass, and Latin America, while margins at Maserati remained strong at 13.8 percent due to strong demand for its first SUV, the Levante. In a later conference call, investors are looking for hints on the new strategy to 2022 which the company promised to unveil early next year. Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne said earlier this year that FCA would streamline its portfolio and that components businesses, including Magneti Marelli, would be separated from the group, possibly via a spin-off. While FCA confirmed its targets this year, doubts remain about its exposure to a weakening U.S. market, recall costs and potential fines over emissions after it was targeted by European and U.S.
