1973 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000
Designed for Bertone by Giorgetto Giugiaro early in his long and illustrious career, the GTV was an immediate favorite from its introduction, initially as the Giulia Sprint GT in 1963. The restrained elegance and perfect proportions of these cars have aged beautifully and the cars survived for over 10 years with relatively light cosmetic changes but significant mechanical upgrades, including the eventual fitment of fuel injection and a 2.0 liter engine. The initial specification, which included 5-speed transmission and Alfa’s excellent alloy twin-cam inline-4, remained relatively unchanged. The biggest change occurred in 1969 with the elimination of the early “stepped” hood and the change of the nomenclature to GTV. Under the hood was another story all together. Over the years, the engine displacement grew which altered the GTV’s character. The innovative high-revving, carbureted 1570 cc DOHC four (1600) was succeeded by a 1779 cc four (1750) with a SPICA mechanical fuel injection system in the GTV of 1969, and finally the displacement increase to 1962cc (2000) via an increase in bore in 1971. This particular car has seen significant restorative work in recent years, with over $20,000 in receipts, including new interior, new windscreen, new weatherstripping, new trunk carpet, new air conditioning compressor and drier, rebuilt radiator, new clutch, and new ring gear. Additionally, the car was serviced by Glenn Oliveria, including oil change, new gear oil, serviced fuel injection pump including new filter, adjustment of the timing and fuel injection, and general tune up. The car makes a strong cosmetic presentation. The paint is glossy and free from significant wear or aging, and is a high quality job for a car of this value bracket. The body is straight overall and displays good panel fit and operation. The chrome trim is in good shape, being sound throughout, although there are some surface scratches. The glass and lights are excellent throughout. The wheels are excellent, having been refinished during the restoration. The interior is excellent, with fresh upholstery and carpets. The shift boot was also replaced and a dashboard cover fitted. The instruments and controls are in very good condition, and the wood is excellent other than one crack at the corner of the shifter aperture. The headliner is also excellent and the overall impression of the interior is very strong, other than some cosmetic wear on small trim items such as the dome lights and grab handles. The car is fitted with a Momo Monte Carlo steering wheel as well as air conditioning. The engine compartment is in well-maintained condition but has never been restored. Considering this, it is in great shape, but it is not spotlessly clean. In general, it is correctly presented, with SPICA injection and airbox. The trunk received new carpet and is in very good condition. The undercarriage is solid, dry, and nearly free of corrosion. The seat pans appear to have been replaced and the workmanship was first rate. This is a great opportunity to acquire a great-running unmodified GTV. Relatively inexpensive for most of their lives, many GTVs were neglected, a problem that is exacerbated by the fact that they are vulnerable to rust. This particular car is structurally sound and has been restored and tremendous expensive. It comes with a thick file of invoices from the restoration and is ready to drive and enjoy. Alfa Romeo prioritizing vehicle quality and customer satisfaction
Wed, Dec 28 2022Stellantis honcho Carlos Tavares has proved himself adroit at the turnaround. GM had lost money on its European Opel/Vauxhall unit for two decades before Tavares took the helm at Peugeot-Citroen (PSA) and bought GM's European arm. Tavares restored Opel/Vauxhall to profit in a year. Within 18 months of PSA's "merger" with Fiat-Chrysler being official, we're no longer hearing doomsday stories from some of the perpetually troubled marques under the new umbrella. All of the Italians — Alfa Romeo, Abarth, Fiat, Lancia, Maserati — say they're doing well, Alfa Romeo back in the black and planning a range that will be more accessible and more fun to own. Having established Tavares' mastery of the basics, we've yet to find out if he knows how to transform a brand, which is what all of the Italian automakers need. At Alfa Romeo, the North American heads told Automotive News that they're still establishing the foundations of a revolution. In doing so, the brand sounds more like the kind of premium automaker it's been aspiring to be since its return in 2008. Vincent Noirbent, VP of Brand and Product Planning for Alfa Romeo on this continent, said the automaker's working a 10-year plan to place itself as Stellantis' global premium brand below Maserati's all-out luxury. We don't know how that's going to work with Lancia in Europe, but we don't get Lancia, so that potential clash is out of our jurisdiction. Autonews phrased Noirbent's message as, "Customer satisfaction and vehicle quality are arguably 'more important' to the brand than sales as it works to build momentum in the U.S." He also said it's more important to build a "sound business" built around the strengths of the brand and that doesn't rely on incentives. A Miami dealer described comments from Alfa Romeo North America boss Larry Dominque as wanting to "make the cars right first, make the [ownership] experience better, and build the value of the brand so somebody will pay an extra $100 a month." In an interview from Pebble Beach, Dominique said a luxury service experience and experiential marketing will also be involved. This will include "concierge services, pick-up and drop-off service for test drives," and when visiting a dealer, "it's the kind of thing where not only could you come in to see beautiful cars, but also do Italian cooking lessons and wine tastings." All the work will take time.
The 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia's infotainment system is new, but is it better?
Wed, May 6 2020When Alfa Romeo introduced the Giulia in 2017, it was praised for its its on-road manners, its gorgeous styling and its performance credentials. It was criticized for, well, just about everything else, including a clunky, low-resolution and feature-light infotainment system. Enthusiasts can forgive many of a car's flaws so long as the driving experience is stellar, and for that reason, the Giulia quickly became a darling. But Alfa can't depend on enthusiasts alone to buy its cars; they need to be seen as legitimate players in the luxury market, and to do that, they need interior tech and materials to match their price points. For 2020, Alfa Romeo addressed the Giulia's shortcomings. The infotainment system was overhauled, with a new 8.8-inch touchscreen headlining a host of additional features. The Giulia now has acoustic glass for a quieter, more luxurious cabin, and some much-needed material improvements on the steering wheel, dash and center console. There's also a new USB Type-C outlet, a wireless device charging option and some other behind-the-scenes features, like a wireless hot spot and over-the-air firmware update capabilities. The Giulia's original infotainment system was criticized for its low-res screen with no touch interface, a lack of quick access buttons for key features, and a lack of depth when it came to integrated tech. On paper, Alfa has addressed all of these shortcomings, but I wanted to see how it performs in the real world. To do this, I set aside some time with the 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio to dedicate solely to exploring its new tech features. What I found was a bit of a mixed bag. Let's start with the interface itself. The 8.8-inch screen used to be an upgrade, but the extra real estate is now standard and, as we mentioned up top, it's now a touchscreen. Both the resolution and the quality of individual page graphics have been significantly improved compared to the old software. Alfa says the underlying hardware was improved to support the improved visual experience. Improved, perhaps, but not perfected. The interface still lags inputs (especially touch) and lacks a crisp, responsive feel. Even after the system has fully loaded, there's a visible delay between finger gestures and responses from the interface.
2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio exhaust is just as good as you hoped
Fri, May 22 2020Alfa Romeos, especially the fast ones, are car enthusiast darlings. As such, you likely already know that the 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio has a Ferrari-derived twin-turbo V6 making 505 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. What you may not know for sure is how it sounds. And if you watch the video above, you'll know positively that it sounds excellent. Most of the video features the Alfa in Dynamic or Race modes, which open up the exhaust and make the shifts faster and aggressive, among other things such as stiffening the suspension. In these modes, the Alfa growls, howls and everything in-between. It's not a flawless performance, as there are times you get a bit of V6 drone, but when its right, its pipes sound amazing Fortunately for anyone with easily agitated neighbors, or buyers who want to take the Alfa on long drives, it quiets right down in its normal and eco modes. It also starts in the normal mode by default, so you won't wake anyone up if you have to drive off late at night or early in the morning. Certainly in the sound department, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio is a well-rounded performer. Related Video:
