1985 Alfa Romeo Spider convertible

For those who know and love Alfas, 1985 is a great year...reliable Bosch fuel injection, classic style, and the interior still featured (for the last year) the "pod" gauges and the lovely wooden steering wheel. Of course, there's that engine too (!).

This is a wonderful example, with some unique and tasteful touches. Factory metallic silver paint, and completely rust-free top to bottom (see pics). Recently waxed and detailed, as is evident. The stock black interior was completely redone in the 90s in top-quality burgundy leather. . . dash cap, dash, door panels, console cover, seats. It's remained in very very nice condition, with only minor hardening and very slight wear in the driver's seat. This car was a daily driver for me until recent knee surgery that makes a standard transmission unwieldy. The car features:
• Recent mechanical work including valve job (by Alfa Atlanta), brake master cylinder and vacuum booster, and odds and ends
• Redoing of the suspension, with new springs etc... corners like no Alfa I've ever driven.
• Complete recent electrical check-up and clean-up to eliminate all shorts and erratic behavior
• Good clutch and very very good transmission. . .it doesn't "shift like a Toyota" but with good technique there is no second-gear synchro grind
• Good tires (Pirellis all around), original five-spoke wheels, good brakes
• Great condition top with clear and supple window
• Very nice stereo with Sony head unit, Alpine remote power amp, and MB Quart two-way speakers (tastefully mounted in the kick panels and not the doors)
• Nice quality alarm system (I don't ever use it, but I know it works)

Bobby at Alfa Atlanta knows this car well and can recommend it highly. Were I to keep it, I'd just keep driving it vigorously. When you get a new clutch some day, get the horseshoe seal replaced (it seeps a bit of oil) but doesn't need anything to be a daily driver. The only things not working are the horn and the fuel gauge (but the light still works) and the AC of course. It's a very clean and mostly original example.

As for history, I bought this car maybe 10 years ago from the person who had had it restored and renewed (that leather, and an engine rebuild). Mileage at the time was unknown due to a broken odometer, since replaced. I sold the car three years later to a colleague who drove it another few years, did all the suspension work, and sold it to an Audi repair shop in Atlanta. I bought it back three years ago and have enjoyed it and repaired/renewed it since. So I don't know the mileage, but it's just had a new top-end rebuild and runs/shifts/drives/looks excellent.

I cannot post them here, but there are two YouTube videos under my user name, Mark K, with "1985 Alfa Start" and "Through the gears" that provide additional information and a glimpse at some twisty-road fun.

Alfa Romeo 6C could return in 2020

Mon, Jan 22 2018

Keep your salt shaker handy, because you might need a grain or two for this rumor, as scrumptious as it may be. According to German tuner Pogea Racing, Alfa Romeo is planning to revive the 6C nameplate, with a production launch in 2020. The company posted its inside info on its Facebook page, citing "an absolute trustworthy and legit source" who is "very deep into the decisions of the management of Alfa Romeo." According to the post, we can expect to see the Alfa Romeo 6C introduced at one of the major auto shows in 2018 or 2019. If true, the rumor is exciting, but not totally surprising. FCA is growing its investment in the Italian brand, along with its lineup. We've already learned of Alfa's plans for an SUV larger than the Stelvio, which could offer seven seats and a mild hybrid system. The addition to the lineup of what we could assume to be a coupe larger and more expensive than the Alfa Romeo 4C, and meanwhile bringing back a classic nameplate, doesn't seem farfetched. After all, we've heard similar rumors before, with the 6C reportedly planned as a competitor to the Jaguar F-Type. Under the hood, the Giulia Quadrifoglio's 2.9-liter twin-turbo aluminum V6 — good for 505 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque — seems like the perfect fit for the 6C. The 6C nameplate has roots in six-cylinder road and racing cars beginning in the 1920s. To see it revived after decades of hibernation would not only be interesting for fans and potential customers, it would be symbolic of the company's continued growth under the FCA umbrella. Marchionne threatens to move Alfa production out of Italy

Fri, 12 Jul 2013

Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne was unsurprisingly frank when asked by reporters about potential investments in Italian manufacturing for Alfa Romeo and Maserati, giving the Italian government the ultimatum, "Italy should decide if they want [Alfa Romeo's relaunch] to happen here or not as Fiat and Chrysler have several alternatives." Them's fightin' words.
Fiat's issue with the government stems directly from its courtroom clashes with the Fiom labor union. The two are currently embroiled in proceedings over longer shifts and shorter breaks, as Fiom has so far refused to sign a new contract citing revised labor laws that it says are anti-union.
According to Bloomberg, Fiat will be spending over $2.5 billion on development of eight new Alfas and six new Maseratis, in a bid to wrest some of the luxury pie away from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. But that's only going to happen if the government is willing to play ball and make life easier on Fiat.

Editors' Choice: Top Five 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show Debuts

Thu, Sep 17 2015

Consider the 2015-16 auto show season officially kicked off. The Frankfurt Motor Show offered a great look at the newest crop of production cars and conceptual machines, and brought some old favorites back into the spotlight for a closer look. (The Alfa Romeo Giulia, for example, debuted in June, but this was the first time most of us saw it.) Now that the dust has settled and we're all on flights back to the US, our editors cast their votes for their personal favorites from the Frankfurt show. These are the cars we truly loved seeing the most. But unlike other shows, there was no one runaway winner – all of the Top Five received positive praise from our team. We won't spoil the results, though. Scroll down to see what we liked most from this year's Frankfurt expo. 5th Place – MERCEDES-BENZ IAA CONCEPT View 12 Photos MIKE AUSTIN: The clean lines on this concept have me excited for a more elegant beauty to future Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Next to the Concept IAA, the lovely S-Class Coupe looks like an overstyled barge. DAVID GLUCKMAN: Yeah, the extendable rear is neat and all, but I'm more interested in the front-end styling of this one. It looks like the Tron version of a 300SL, in a good way. I'm hopeful it portends the future of Mercedes design. STEVEN EWING: I was super impressed when Mercedes said that, with the rear end extended, this concept has a drag coefficient of just 0.19. That's crazy aerodynamic. I'm not head-over-heels about the styling, but I think the lessons learned from this concept are really important, and will play a huge role in the future of Mercedes' products. 4th Place – ALFA ROMEO GIULIA View 15 Photos SEYTH MIERSMA: I can hardly express how in love with this car I am. The styling feels creative, modern, and evocative, without going over the top. The proposed performance is spectacular. And the Alfa badge speaks to a legacy of romantic motoring. DAVID GLUCKMAN: Pretty Italian car makes big promises and will probably deliver on about three quarters of them. I think that will still be enough for me. JEREMY KORZENIEWSKI: I'm really intrigued by the Giulia. It looks great, sounds awesome, and I'm expecting it to have a load more character than its German rivals. I hope I'm not disappointed. 3rd Place – JAGUAR F-PACE View 15 Photos GREG MIGLIORE: It's the first SUV for Jaguar, and I think they nailed the design, capability, and electronics. It's the right car at the right time.
