I'm finally letting go of my GS-R.  It's a super fun yet efficient daily driver, and can also be a cheap track toy.  It's a modern classic for a reason.  I'm the second owner and have put about 92,000 miles on it.  Here's what you need to know:
  • Paint is old and the clear coat has peeled off of most of the top of the car, though I've covered the hood in matching black 3M vinyl.  Scratches, small dents, and a couple of small rust spots as expected on an 18 year old car, but it looks great from 20+ feet away, especially on its polished 16" Rota Slipstream wheels
  • Those wheels are wrapped in Dunlop Star Specs with good tread left.  The car also comes with it's original and rare 6 spoke 15" rims with center caps, which are wearing General Altimax Arctic snow tires (making it a beast in the white stuff).
  • Clear corner indicator lenses with amber bulbs.
  • Mechanically, it runs great even at over 230,000 miles, but it's a Honda, so of course it does.  The engine revs quickly to 8000rpm and sounds great through the cold air intake, Car Sound high-flow cat, Magnaflow cat-back exhaust, and DynoMax Super Turbo muffler, yet doesn't drone or attract too much unwanted attention.
  • 26-34 observed MPG.
  • Shifter is a joy, partially thanks to Redline MTL synthetic transmission fluid
  • AC needs servicing, not sure if it's just a recharge or something bigger.
  • Clean CARFAX.
  • Small oil leak, likely a notoriously lame stock cam seal, but I've only had to top it off recently, and not until roughly 1000 miles before it's scheduled to be changed (which has been about every 7000 miles, 7500 is the factory recommendation). Mobil 1 or similar Synthetic oil only.
  • New brake pads and rotors all around (Hawk HPS pads in front) and new calipers in back.
  • The interior has held up surprisingly well, particularly the black cloth seats and soft-touch dash.
  • Everything works except for the trip computer (won't reset to zero) and the rear window washer (wiper is fine).
  • Double din Clarion head unit with CD player, Bluetooth, and USB/iPod input routed to the center armrest bin, plus Polk Audio component and coaxial speakers front and rear.  Power antenna mast works great.
  • 3M brushed titanium wrap on the center stack, looks good but not perfect.

Title is clear, in hand. I have full maintenance records for as long as I've owned it.  Notable recent services include:

  • Timing belt and water pump- 17k miles ago
  • Windshield - 5k miles ago
  • Brake pads and rotors all around, rear calipers - 2k miles ago
  • Battery - Last week

Acura NSX will use Cosworth block, plus other neat tidbits

Sat, Aug 15 2015

The blue NSX you see here was built just two weeks ago. Prototype number six, it rolled off Acura's newest assembly line in Ohio and was rushed out to the Monterey peninsula for various car week activities. We had a chance to sit down with several members of the NSX team to discuss the car, the long road from concept to production, and some interesting details. Below are some choice bits from our conversations. Acura is pretty proud of the fact that NSX version 2.0 was designed and is being built in the US. The new assembly line, called the Performance Manufacturing Center, is in Honda's hometown of Marysville, Ohio. While the line is brand new, the building has seen many uses over its lifetime, most recently as a warehouse facility. PMC staff numbers about 100, with 60 technical and 40 non-technical associates. The car uses parts sourced globally, and one of those sources is Cosworth. The engine blocks and heads come from the English firm and get assembled into twin-turbo powerhouses at Honda's nearby Anna, Ohio, engine plant. The Cosworth name is rarely associated with a bad engine, so we were geeked to hear the NSX's 550-plus-horsepower hybrid powertrain has good genes. Acura hasn't decided how many cars will come to the US each year, but supplies will be limited. We're told there is a total figure for global sales – basically anywhere Honda and Acura vehicles are sold – but they're not ready to divulge that number. Dealer allocation is also yet to be sorted out, although we're told that any dealer that has the necessary tools and equipment to service the new NSX will be able to sell them. Acura currently has 272 US dealers. The switch from the transverse engine originally planned to a longitudinal twin-turbo engine threw everyone involved for a loop. The designers had to lengthen their nearly finalized design, and the engineers working on the production process had to revise or redo much of their work. Though we've been waiting a while for the car since the concept first surfaced in 2012, it's pretty amazing to think that the car was engineered one and a half times and a new factory was built in about three years. But yeah, it's delayed, with series production now set to commence in the spring of 2016. One result of the switch to a longitudinal engine is a transmission hump in the cargo area aft of the engine. The hold is still sized to fit a bag of golf clubs, though it will be a tight fit.

Acura NSX #001 sells for $1.2 million

Sun, Jan 31 2016

When the new Acura NSX hits showrooms in the Spring, it will cost at least $156,000 in "base" spec, or as much as $205k fully loaded. But at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale Saturday, one notable buyer paid a record $1.2 million for the privilege of ordering the very first one. That works out to a good six or seven times the list price, but fortunately it's all going to a good cause. The winning bid for the very first production example of the new Acura NSX was placed by none other than Rick Hendrick, a man best known for his NASCAR team but also for other projects like the modified Jeeps his company is pitching to the US Army. His $1.2 million will allow him to order the first one off the line, to his specifications. Proceeds are earmarked towards the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and Camp Southern Ground in Georgia, which focuses on at-risk kids, children of military families, and those with neurobehavioral disorders. Hendrick's winning bid marks the highest price that Barrett-Jackson has ever recorded for a VIN 001 vehicle. And make no mistake about it: it has handled a lot of them. This weekend alone also saw the first new Chevy COPO Camaro raise $300,000 for United Way, and Jay Leno's 2006 Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson edition (also the first of its kind) bring in $200k for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Winning bidder Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports and founder of Hendrick Automotive Group, has earned the right to custom order the first production model of Acura's highly anticipated NSX, which comes to market this spring. All proceeds of the auction will go to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, based in North Carolina, and Camp Southern Ground in Georgia, the passion project of Grammy® Award-winning music artist Zac Brown.

Honda is first Japanese carmaker to be a net-exporter from US

Wed, 29 Jan 2014

Over the last decade or so, many foreign automakers have challenged the idea of what defines an "American car," but Honda took things a step further last year by exporting more cars out of the US than it imported in. Reuters is reporting that in 2013, a total of 108,705 Honda and Acura models were exported from the US with only 88,357 being shipped in. This gives Honda a net exporter status here, and makes it the first of such among the major Japanese automakers.
Honda's US imports have been dropping over the last five years while its exports have been steadily increasing. In 2008, the report indicates that Honda shipped 187,000 vehicles to the US and exported only 20,000, and even by 2012 Honda still favored imports with 136,000 imports and 74,000 exports. The article says that US-made Honda and Acura vehicles were exported to 50 countries with most ending up in Mexico, but the big news is that the Honda's US production set a record in 2013 with 1.3 million units built.
