HISTORY: Has matching body & chassis numbers (#345 151 391) and has VW replacement engine installed in 1975 (#T0 924 502).  Originally ordered 26 Nov 1965 by Frances Tobias in Landstuhl, Germany from a VW dealer in Kaiserslautern & took delivery on 09 Dec 1965.  She was working with the American Red Cross in the 1960's then relocated to San Antonio Texas USA in the 1970's.  Ordered with Canada specifications which included red rear lenses, safety windshield, Karmann side emblems, & sealed beam headlights.   Just before she passed-away she sold it to her co-worker Marge Tripp from Round Rock, Texas in 1983.  Sold to the friend of Marge’s daughter who sold it in 1996.  David Sanders, a famous Western artist from Austin, Texas USA bought it in Sep 1996 for $3000 and kept it for 7 years until Nov 2003.  Thomas Reay, an architect from Los Osos, California bought it in Nov 2002 and was responsible for its restoration soon after.  He drove it 34K miles over 11 years and was convinced to sell it in March 2014.  The current owner bought it in March 2014 and had the interior completely restored to original with high-quality components.

RESTORATION:  Body was restored (2003) with paint removed to bare metal, no welding was required as it was rust-free, then it was repainted its original Sea Blue L360.  Bumpers, headlights, fog lights, & other chrome bits were replated.  Aluminum window trims were stripped & polished.  New seals were fitted to windows, doors, & hoods where necessary, otherwise left original.  Interior was restored (2014) with Silver-Beige interior panels (heat-seamed), Silver-Beige seat upholstery, & German squareweave carpet with matching cloth binding.  All black pads are in excellent condition.  Outside mirror glass was replaced.  Rear wood-slat decklid luggage rack is new.

MECHANICAL:  The original 1500cc engine is strong, idles well, and easily gets up to freeway speeds of 75mph.  Shifting into all gears is smooth & easy.  Brakes were recently serviced and are dependable with front disk brakes added for safety.  The exhaust system is original & quiet.  There are no mechanical issues.  It could easily be driven 2500 miles without worry.

OPTIONS & ACCESSORIES:  Under-dash parcel tray, Karmann side emblems (Canada specification), solid red rear lenses (Canada specification), MPH speedometer (Canada specification), 6V Halogen headlights, rear shelf metal luggage bar, coco mats (2014), full-circle horn ring, radial tires (2014), T34 tool roll & tools, Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio with faceplate, dual reverse lamps, clear front signal lenses, wood-slat rear decklid rack (2014).

ISSUES:  Turn signal lever has accessory chrome cover installed over repaired lever arm.  The dual horns do not work and the fog light relay has recently stopped working.  These should be simple repairs if we have not fixed them by the time the vehicle has sold.

The Volkswagen Group switches official language to English

Wed, Dec 14 2016

The Volkswagen Group can't be fairly thought of as entirely German anymore, so the news that the company is switching its official language to English to help attract managers and executives is a rational, if surprising, decision. While many VW Group companies are still staidly German in character and culture, consider the other companies that it controls: Bentley (British), Bugatti (French), Ducati and Lamborghini (Italian), Skoda (Czech), Scania trucks (Swedish), and SEAT (Spanish). Not to mention the large Volkswagen Group of America operation, which constructs cars in Chattanooga, TN. Volkswagen's explicit motivation is to improve management recruitment – making sure the company isn't losing out on candidates for important positions because they can't speak German – and that's inherently sensible in a globalized economy. Particularly considering, like it or lump it, that English is the lingua franca of said global economy. It also should make it inherently easier to communicate between its world-wide subsidiaries and coordinate operations. It's hard to say for sure if this will have any impact on the consumer, although it's easy to see the benefits if, say, VW Group hires some American product planners or engineers and they push for features and designs that more closely suit American needs. After all, the US is a hugely important market for any manufacturer, and so the switch to English almost certainly has something to do with the outsized influence of the US in the global economy. And there doesn't seem to be a downside from a purely rational perspective, although it could mean that the Group's corporate culture becomes less German. Whether that's a good or a bad thing depends on your perspective. Volkswagen hatches hotter GTI in Geneva

Tue, 05 Mar 2013

The all-new seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf hasn't even launched here in the United States, but over in Geneva, we're already getting our first glimpse at the hotter GTI hatchback. The fancy new Mk VII Golf is already off to a healthy start with positive reviews in Europe, and we have no doubt that this next GTI will work hard to regain its title as king of the hot hatches.
The big news for this generation of GTI is that for the first time ever, Volkswagen is actually offering two different power grades for the model, both relying on the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four. Standard cars pack 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, but an optional performance pack ups the horsepower number to 230. Hitting 60 miles per hour takes 6.5 seconds (6.4 with the performance pack) and top speed is quoted at 153 mph (or 155 with the performance kit). Volkswagen will continue to offer the GTI with both six-speed manual and dual-clutch transmissions.
On the visual front, the sub-3,000-pound GTI adds the usual bit of hot hatch aggression over the standard Golf, and those changes carry over to the interior with a flat-bottomed wheel and, of course, plaid seats. She's certainly a looker, and while some of us do find the new Golf's design to be a bit staid and evolutionary, the enhancements for the GTI indeed tug on our enthusiast heart strings.

Volkswagen Multivan Alltrack Concept takes the luxury van life off road

Wed, 05 Mar 2014

Volkswagen dug into its commercial vehicle fleet for its latest Geneva Motor Show concept, blending the versatile body of the T5 MultiVan with a luxuriously appointed interior, 4Motion all-wheel drive and a thrifty diesel powertrain.
That 177-horsepower diesel engine routes its power to the AWD system through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Based on that alone, we'd expect the Multivan Alltrack's behind-the-wheel experience to be somewhat familiar. That all-wheel-drive system and van body contribute to the 21-degree approach and 15-degree departure angles of this soft-roading MultiVan.
What wouldn't be familiar is its exquisite cabin. Volkswagen opted for a nautical theme for the concept's interior, featuring grey-blue leather seats from Poltrona Frau and a floor finished in real wood. The dark wood trim can also be found throughout the interior, running below the windows and on the dash.
