I have for sale a 1985 Toyota Celica GTS convertible. It has the original 22re engine with a W58 5 Speed manual transmission. The car currently has 143,000 miles on the odometer, but everything mechanical has recently been 100% restored.

I have the original window sticker for this car and it sold for over $19,000 new! I also have the original owners manual and owners guide, along with a factory service manual and the Celica Convertible factory repair manual supplement.

This car has been garaged for nearly all of its life and has absolutely zero rust. The body is perfect, with no dents or dings and no body filler anywhere. I have personally owned this car for the last 10 years, and for the last 5 years I have been in the process of doing a complete restoration of the car. At this point, everything mechanical on the car has been completely restored and it runs and drives like a brand new car. Everything on the car works perfectly- all 4 power windows work perfectly, the top goes up and down perfectly, both power side mirrors are intact and function perfectly, the air conditioning still has the original R12 freon in it and still works perfectly.

Over the last 5 years, here are some of the details of what I have done to this car:

Engine completely rebuilt, balanced and blueprinted at 140,500 miles (block bored, honed and decked, new freeze plugs, crank polished, new pistons, new rocker arm shafts, new camshaft and valve springs, new oil pump, new water pump, new timing chain and tensioner, new distributor cap and rotor, new spark plugs and plug wires, all new bearings, seals and fluids)
New radiator and radiator hoses, new heavy duty thermostat
W58 manual transmission disassembled, inspected, bearings replaced where needed, new gaskets
New clutch assembly (NAPA lifetime warranty), new clutch master cylinder, new clutch fluid
New pinion seal and axle seals in rear end, new lucas synthetic gear oil
New front tie rods and lower ball joints, 4 wheel alignment
New Cooper Cobra tires (correct GTS size 245/60/14)
New flexible brake lines at all 4 wheels (8 hoses total), All 4 brake calipers disassembled and rebuilt
Brake fluid flushed and replaced, new front and rear brake pads, wheel bearings cleaned and repacked
New fuel pump in gas tank (Bosch lifetime warranty), gas tank removed and cleaned, new fuel filter
New battery (correct group size 24- 3 year free replacement)
New trunk lid supports (gas strut cartridges), new drivers door hinges
New windshield

. . .and I'm sure there are many other things I'm forgetting, but as you can see, I have spared no expense.

In fact, I currently have well over $10,000 invested in this car. Unfortunately, I have other pressing issues right now and I have decided that I'm going to have to part with my baby to help pay the bills. I'm just hoping she will go to someone who will give her a really good home, who will understand what a rare and unique vehicle this is and who will truly appreciate all the love and attention I have given her.

Negatives- I mention all of this only in the interest of full disclosure (because I'm a VERY picky person myself):

The car was repainted by the previous owner. I was given some of the paint used and it's high quality paint in the original color code, but in my opinion the paint job isn't the best possible quality. Whoever did it painted the whole front bumper red, instead of leaving the black stripe across the middle as it was originally. This could be easily redone. Overall, I would call the paint quality fantastic for a daily driver but I wouldn't consider it to be show winning quality.

Also, the top was replaced by the previous owner, and unfortunately it doesn't have the original glass rear window. However, the top and the headliner are still in very good condition.

There are a few little odds and ends in the interior that aren't perfect- the 2 triangular shaped pieces that go on the inside of the side mirrors have fallen off, and need to be reattached or replaced. The shift boot is missing on the shifter (the one that clips to the console), the drivers side floor mat has a hole in it and the rear seats don't latch in the up position very well for some reason, but I always just leave them in the down position anyway.

If you have questions, or if you would like to see it in person, feel free to call me at 828-329-2724.

China sticking to its guns on EVs for the future

Mon, Apr 27 2015

Automakers are obviously free to develop whatever next-gen, zero-emissions tech that they want. However, if a company wants to get on the good side of the Chinese government, that strategy better include some plug-in vehicles. The authorities there are lending major support to plug-ins at the moment, and its forcing the auto industry to play along. According to Bloomberg, Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai, and BMW are all launching dedicated EV brands with their joint venture partners, and as many as 40 electric models could hit the Chinese market this year alone. However, analysts don't think the vehicles are going to sell well. Instead, the launches are essentially a way for companies to play nice with the government and help get the approval to build factories in the country. Take Toyota as an example. The company is pushing the future of hydrogen hard with promotional films for the Mirai and engineers talking down fast-charging EVs. Still, the Japanese automaker is getting ready to launch two EV brands in China with its joint venture partners, according to Bloomberg. China's push for alternative fuels has been happening for a while, but it really kicked into high gear last year. The government has set a goal to improve fleet-wide economy by 40 percent by the end of the decade in order to spend less importing oil and for the population's health. The plan has shown some success so far with hybrid and EV sales growing early in 2015. Performance cars overpower the Detroit Auto Show

Tue, Jan 13 2015

At precisely the stroke of noon on Monday, the 2016 Acura NSX rolled on stage at the Detroit Auto Show amid plumes of smoke and dancing lights. The sounds of the powerful engine revving soared to the rafters. It was the second coming of Acura's iconic sports car, and the reveal had all of the expected trappings. Afterwards, champagne corks popped and the bubbly flowed. It was noon in Detroit, but for the green-car movement, it seemed like the clock had struck midnight. That's an exaggeration, but performance was the overwhelming theme of North America's most important show. Ford – which has helped lead the way in smaller displacement engines and early adoption of hybrid powertrains – had more than 1,500 horsepower on stage one point after it revealed the GT concept, the new F-150 Raptor and the Shelby Mustang GT350R. The NSX is technically a hybrid (it has three electric motors), but with 550-plus hp, there's no doubt this Acura was bred on the track. The theme continued throughout the show at nearly every stand. Alfa Romeo showed off the 4C Spider, which is the open-air version of a car that purports to be the spiritual successor of the high-performance 33 Stradale from 1967. On Tuesday, Cadillac is scheduled to reveal the 640-hp CTS-V with the V8 transplanted from the Corvette Z06, and the Lexus was expected to roll out its own V8-powered beast, the 467-hp GS F. For enthusiasts – especially enthusiasts with money – these are halcyon days. But make no mistake, all of this power has a purpose. Ford product chief Raj Nair said the Blue Oval uses high performance cars to develop technologies, like aerodynamics and materials, which are then shared across its lineup. "It's another proof point about how serious we are in developing innovation through performance," he said. Ford, which is rolling out at least 12 performance cars by 2020, said the sporty cars attract younger and more influential buyers to its fold, which can help burnish its image beyond adding sales volume. Toyota is taking a similar approach, senior vice president Bob Carter said, noting the Lexus RC coupe draws people into showrooms and gets them excited about the brand, even if they don't end up buying one. "They provide an aspiration and a halo that provides the attention that gets you noticed in a cluttered market," he said.

We dialed a random Swede, talked about not driving Volvos

Fri, Apr 8 2016

The Swedish Number is now a thing. It's a cool thing. You dial, a random Swede picks up, and you chat. Or, in my case, you dial and a random Brit living in Sweden for the past six year picks up and you chat. Since I was calling on behalf of Autoblog, when I got Martin from the small coastal town of Sundsvall, on the phone, we talked about cars, Volvos (natch), and cold-weather testing. Oh, and about plugging in his regular Toyota Prius. ABG: I was able to come to Sweden and test Volvos a month or so ago. Do you drive a Volvo? Martin: [laughs] No. I think Volvo is a fantastic car. It truly is an amazing car, but no. My girlfriend has a company car, so we drive a hybrid Toyota Prius. ABG: And how does that work in the cold winters? It obviously cuts down on the environmental problems. Martin: No problem at all. Because we have these cold winters, like you do get in the States as well, where we park our cars, we've got electricity posts where we can plug in the cars. Motor car engines have a heater, so you can have the heater going for some time before you get into the car. So it warms up the engine and there's a socket inside the car to warm up the inside of the car as well. It's very efficient. You just need to remember to set the timer when you climb out of the car and connect the cable. It obviously cuts down on the environmental problems as well because your car is already warm before you start them. ABG: I know that makes them overall more efficient, I just didn't know it could work with any car. It used to be you would keep the diesel engine blocks warm, but this works for pretty much any car in Sweden? Martin: Yes. Our temperatures here can vary. We do tend to get roundabout -18 to -25C [0 to -15F], where I live, sometimes. Normally, in the winter, we always plug the car in to make it more environmentally friendly, for starters, and then it's a nice warm car when you get in. The coldest I remember it getting here was -36 [-33F]. In the north of Sweden they've had, on record, -56 [-69F]. ABG: That's too cold. Martin: That is cold, yeah. Most countries, now, use the north of Sweden to test their cars because of the ice. Volvo S90 Prototype View 15 Photos ABG: That's actually why I came over there, to test out the new XC90s and S90s. Martin: Is that your job, then? ABG: I don't test the cars for the companies, but I test them for Autoblog. They'll invite us to test the vehicles so we can see for ourselves what the vehicles do in cold weather.
