1987 Mercedes 560SL
Mercedes 560SL, 5.6 Liter V8. Midnight Blue/Tan (Code 904 Blue), garaged, a very nice car that has been well kept all its life but (in my book) used abundantly. This is nothing more than just a driver. However this "driver" still is a bit collectible in the condition its in. I am going to verbally abuse this car to the point you hit the back button... but look at the photos. The car is unarguably nice, attractive and it simply does everything perfect. This car goes against everything I stand for as a collector as what the odometer shows, (as an investment collector) the car is simply used up, nothing left, done finished, crush it... but is it really? Not every car in a collection has to be brand new, perfect, unused and "0" excuses. Being that the car is miled out of its gourd, makes it a nice car to drive vs wasting more expensive investment level cars. Its a darn nice car to go to dinner in, be seen in and handing a valet the keys to this car wont leave you with an upset stomach at dinner. This will hit home if you are a real car guy.... As nice as it is, with the miles it has, its only a driver, that is all it can be or ever will be. I dont see this particular example really seeing a huge appreciation... but a 500 mile one of these is on its way to unobtainable. This is just a car to enjoy and there is something to be said for that. The color combo on the car is also great, the Midnight Blue is very much a black car with a hint of blue to it. Hard to tell if its black or blue and its just a great contrast. Possibly the best color on these cars and it is well received by all.
The Mercedes R107 began in 1971 and ended in 1989. The 107 is probably THE car that represents Mercedes at its finest and may go down in history as the face of Mercedes Benz. Even in the last year 89, this car had a vintage flair to it by that point as the body style had run so long. Having a body style run for so long is the best thing in the world for the integrity of a vehicle... Every year they figured something out to make it better or correct the mistakes of the previous. The crown vic and town car is the best US car ever simply for the fact by the time they ended the run there was little left to chance due to the length of the run. The holy grail of the R107 is the 560SL, and that was the 86-89, then they were over. 86-89 are virtually the same with only some very small insignificant changes in the 4 years. 86-87 had the 3rd brake light back on the deck lid, 88-89 had it forward... other than that, there is little to no difference in the 560 cars. The extensive run of this body style also helped the car become a classic as its not a car (like newer Mercedes) that they literally change the style on almost every 2 years making the former car just a recyclable item like a water bottle. These cars were built to last, more in the quality level vs the bell and whistle check box that seems to mandate what sells today. Also the crowd that bought these cars new were a whole lot more savvy than the current buyers. These cars actually held a good % of their resale for many years. A new Mercedes can literally lose 100K in less than 2 years when that water bottle is ready for the bin yet people are still lining up and then throwing them away later. They really have me asking why. Many 560s survived well as they were a "toy" car vs daily transportation for many. If you could afford one of these new, you probably had another car to drive. Today the resale of the mega low mile as new 560SLs have seen as high as 80K, but the high mile ones are literally almost free. However you do see a few good high mile ones still sell at a higher price.... and condition is everything on these cars... and this one is a condition first.
The car here is an original, well kept garaged car that has been driven. It was owned by a friend that was a car dealer back in the 80s, long since retired, this car was something he just held on to in his garage and took out when he could. It was never part of a collection to the level some of my cars are, but it was not your typical bump and grind Benz owned by a neglectful image first person. Was not a party car, or "hey look at me car". He took care of it and it does not show like it does from some sort of magic... its just a really nice car that looks like many sub 30K mile well kept 560s. Nothing has been dyed or doctored on this car. For me, I am driving this car on nice days a bit. It is a liberating car to drive as I am not counting every tick of the odometer as a detriment. Going out in public, the car receives incredible reviews from everyone that encounters it. In fact most drop their jaw. This car is all original, dealer serviced, always quality maintained. Its on Michelin Tires too... The only non OEM item is the very tasteful edition of a Kenwood KRC-302, separate amp and matching 12 disc changer. This is a nice sounding system. So much nicer than my other 560! If you know the weak points of the R107, its the Becker Stereo. I can attest I have original Cadillac tube radios from the 50s that sound better than a Becker. I do not have the original, at least I cant find it, but they are commonly traded on Ebay for 50-80 bucks all the time. Readily available and little desired. I would never go back on this car.
The nice thing about the 560 to me is the 5.6 liter engine. It is what makes the car. Just Google the 560 and find out these cars are no slouch. They are very powerful and at their 227HP rating, it really is quite common knowledge today that they were underrated a good % to what they really are. I can testify they are stronger that a later R129 500SL... but not a 600SL. Even today the car is beyond decent in power and I am a high power car nut. No complaints at all on these 560SLs... they do everything you want them to and more. Really, I believe these car will go down in history as the face of Mercedes Benz. They are a quality car, last of the real non plastic Mercedes and its pretty much a unanimously liked car, even if you cant stand Mercedes. I also have a sub 1000 mile 560SL in the collection. It is for sale north of $70K, but you cannot drive it like you can this one. In fact, you cannot drive it at all. Side by side, this is the more appealing car too. Offered for sale as at the present time I have about 55 cars and I am not using it on the weekends like I used to. If I sell it now, I will buy another 560 later for a driver at some point. This is a must have car in my collection. If it does not sell, matters not! This will be a hard one to replace for me later.

Recharge Wrap-up: Batty battery covers, Mercedes at Silvretta, new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid available in 2015
Tue, Jul 8 2014Apparently, Chevrolet Volt battery covers make suitable homes for bats. As part of an Eagle Scout project, Matthew Netherland created 30 bat houses out of scrapped Volt battery covers donated by Chevy. 22 of the bat houses will be set up near hydroelectric dams in Michigan. Each bat house will accommodate 100 bats, and divert the scrapped materials from the landfill. The battery covers also make great nesting boxes for wood ducks, which General Motors has previously set up at its Milford, Michigan Proving Ground. Last weekend was the Silvretta E-Auto Rally, which saw emissions-free vehicles cross the Montafon Mountains in Austria, including cars from Mercedes-Benz. These cars included the B-Class Electric Drive, B-Class F-Cell, SLS AMG Electric Drive and even the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive. Also on hand for the Silvretta Classic Rally was a V8-powered C111, a 1978 Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC and 300 SL Roadster. Read more in the press release, below. BMW has finalized pricing for the i8 in the US at $135,700 (plus $925 in destination charges). In addition to the base price tag, which we've known for a while, BMW Blog has the complete pricing guide with options and packages. Most of the i8 orders were the Pure Impulse World package, which includes various aesthetic upgrades. It also provides membership to the BMW i Pure Impulse Program, which allows you to "to enjoy innovative ideas and trends in a variety of areas, including home styling, culture, gourmet gastronomy, design and many more." Head over to BMW Blog for more information. The new generation of the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid will arrive later than the rest of the model lineup, confirms Car and Driver. While the gas-powered Sonatas get updated now for the 2015 model year, the Hybrid remains unchanged until late this year or early 2015, when it will arrive as a 2016 model. Hyundai is offering a 2015 Sonata Eco edition, but with 28 miles per gallon in the city and 38 mpg highway (32 combined), it's not quite as appealing as the current Sonata Hybrid's 36/40/38 figures. Read more here. In June, average US fuel economy was 25.5 miles per gallon, making it the fifth straight month above 25 mpg, according to University of Michigan. The average window sticker ratings from vehicles sold in June dropped slightly from 25.6 mpg in May. The year started at 24.9 mpg in January, and hasn't dropped below 25 mpg since.
Infiniti shows Q30 interior ahead of Frankfurt debut
Tue, Sep 1 2015Infiniti is supposed to debut the all-new Q30 hatchback at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, but as the show is still a couple of weeks away and the company has elected to release yet another image, we aren't sure there'll be all that much to see come Sept. 15. With that in mind, then, we give you the first images of the entry-level hatch's cabin, and they're, um, wow. We knew the Q30 had a lot in common with the Mercedes-Benz A-Class but as these images show, this is far more than a common platform. The steering wheel, instrument cluster, switchgear, and shifter are direct from the Mercedes parts bin. From the looks of the images, the Q30 will even have a Mercedes-style key. This might not garner much attention in the budget ranks – take the Scion iA and Mazda2, for example – but this degree of parts sharing in the premium market is sure to raise some eyebrows. It's also a rather bewildering move for Infiniti. The company is, in effect, selling a Mercedes-Benz to any new customers it attracts. That'll certainly make a Q50 a hard sell when it comes time for an upgrade. Now, in Infiniti's defense, there are some differences in the layout here. The triple nozzle-style HVAC vents have been replaced with a more conventional pair of outlets, and the instrument cluster hood extends over the built-in navigation screen. That design decision, in particular, will certainly appeal to critics of the tacked-on-tablet look offered by Mercedes. The analog buttons for the multimedia system have also been tweaked, with the result looking far cleaner than the mess of buttons offered on Mercedes' products (we wouldn't be shocked to see this layout arrive on a facelifted A-, CLA-, or GLA-Class in the near future, though). Beyond those changes, though, there are multiple Mercedes design hallmarks here, including the location of the controls for the seat adjustments. You can check out the Q30's cabin in both right- and left-hand drive varieties courtesy of the images above. And for comparison's sake, we also included our most recent gallery of the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class at the bottom of the page. Have a look and be sure to scroll down for the official press release. Show full video transcript text [00:00:00] Customers have spoken and automobile satisfaction is down in 2015. I'm Chris McGraw and this is your Autoblog Minute. The American Customer Satisfaction Index or ACSI released its updated numbers and according to the survey, new car buyer satisfaction is down for the third straight year. According to an ACSI press release, customer satisfaction with new automobiles has fallen 3.7 percent, to 79 on its 100-point scale. The ACSI report is based on over 4,100 customer surveys collected in the second quarter of 2015 Sitting at the top of the industry in customer satisfaction is Toyota's Lexus brand with a score of 84. Which was good enough to dethrone Mercedes-Benz, which fell 3% to a score of 83. Of the Big Three, Ford was the only domestic automaker to maintain overall customer satisfaction with its score of 81. General Motors slipped 3% to 79 and Fiat Chrysler had a 5% drop, registering a score of 75 out the possible 100. What's driving this trend of customer dissatisfaction? ASCI points to the rise in recalls and car prices. Where do you land on customer satisfaction spectrum? Sound off in the comments with your thoughts on the current state of car ownership and brand quality. For Autoblog, I'm Chris McGraw.
