Unique Backdated Range Rover Classic Early 2-door Style on 2040-cars

For sale is my very unique, dependable 1988 Range Rover Classic. It is excellent mechanical shape, it runs and drives great. Last year of stout LT gear driven transfer case. Rebuilt Engine and drivetrain several years ago by previous owner. Great everyday driver and reliable. I drive it 3-5 times a week. New heater core, blows hot. New exhaust system and muffler. New U-Joints, new fluids everywhere (engine oil, transmission fluid, Transfer case gear oil, gear oil in differentials, coolant). I would not hesitate to drive this Rover anywhere. It has a more reliable (new) Lucas EFI fuel injection system.
Now for what makes it so unique. It has been customized with a ton of factory NOS parts to be closer to the original 2-door Range Rover of the 1970's. Since they didn't change the Range Rover significantly from 1970 to 1994, all these parts bolted right on. Electrical system has been simplified. Carpet, headliner, anything luxurious or nonessential has been removed and stripped out to be more like a real Land Rover. This is not a new luxury land rover, and don't buy it if you expect as much. It handles and rides like a european car, but is capable of smooth and comfortable offroad travel. This car still needs cosmetic finishing, but is a solid and reliable driver and I've enjoyed it for what it is. Note on Odometer reading, Mileage is approximately 270,000 miles, but Instrument panel was replaced with NOS unit sometime in 2005-2006. However, the previous owner (description below) did a rebuilt less than 15,000 miles ago. He completely rebuilt the engine and other mechanicals which is obvious, as the truck runs like a top. Land Rover Factory New Old Stock parts include: 4 NOS RoStyle wheels (3 point 1988 spare also provided in perfect condition). British/Euro Spec small steel bumpers, 70's vertical grill, 70's hood mounted mirrors Raised letter Range Rover badges front and rear, 4 NOS Smiths Auxilary gauges (not plugged in yet), 1970's Jaeger instrument cluster, 1970's lower dash and climate control set up More if I thought about it more. The electrical system has simplified and all electronic gizmos removed, except blinkers, power windows, etc. The truck easily has $6-$7,000 is NOS parts alone. Bad: No AC system present (2nd hand Rover AC systems available), no stereo (NOS radiomobile radio present but not plugged in. rust holes in front footwells. Kits available here on eBay for $50 each to repair No headliner or carpet (this was done on purpose as part of the customization). All gauges except speedometer not plugged in. Gas cap rubber O-ring missing (cheap to replace) Needs paint job, but no surface rust (body is aluminum) front leather seats have a few rips, back is fine I drive this truck 2-3 times a week. I drive it more than my Lexus. I love it, however I need to sell to go towards my Moto Guzzi Ambassador restoration and taxes. This is not a luxury vehicle, its a basic, great driving and handling old school 4x4 the way Land Rover used to make them. Would be a great second vehicle, hunting truck, toy, etc. I wouldn't recommend any old land rover as your everyday transport as you will be tinkering on little things, which is part of the fun. Contrary to myth, parts are not expensive if you know where to look. Buyer is responsible for shipping the Rover at their own expense and must arrange it. I will assist shipping company getting it on their truck. $2,000 due within 24 hours of close of auction, and the remainder due within 48 hours of close of auction. Good luck bidding and please feel free to ask any questions On Apr-06-14 at 18:03:04 PDT, seller added the following information: From Previous Owner (who built it) If you are like me and you LOVE the style, performance, capability and legacy of the Range Rover Classic, then you will no doubt appreciate this Range Rover Panelcraft Custom Replica Retro, which has all of the distinction you could ever ask for with one of these. What a journey I have had with this Range Rover Classic. It has been a real labor of love and I feel it shows in the detailed parts selection and fitting. I really love this car and it has been an absolute pleasure to own, build and drive. My three children have enjoyed the distinction of being know as "The cool car family" kids. I have enjoyed the countless people giving me the thumbs up, other Land Rover enthusiasts tracking me down for questions and those who want to have their picture taken with it- yes there have been a few. Its even been featured on Range-Rover-classic dot com website as a true one of a kind car. So with heavy heart and a kind hand Im offering this car for sale. Being a 1988 SWB Its the closest car to the original Range Rover Classic 2-door. The wheel base, chassis, motor, all exterior panels are identical so it was a excellent platform in which to start. 2-Door Range Rovers are the original and it wasn't until 1979 that they started making them in 4-door with the same wheel base. You could have the car converted to 4-door prior by various coach builders and that why I choose the FLM Panelcraft car to base my build on. I researched this 1977 Panelcraft 4-door conversion Range Rover for about 6 months before I started my search for parts. Aesthetics: I had a blast finding parts on various sites. All my period correct parts are from 1977 or older Range Rovers from the UK, so I began on eBay dot Uk and worked my way through other UK online parts suppliers such as Holden, John Craddock and Britishparts to name a few good ones. I first tried to get parts from US sources but most only sold 1988 parts; the first production year sold in the US market, All parts are Genuine Range Rover parts and mostly New Old Stock. It was a delight to recieve a new part. All parts are UK spec, no North American Spec at all and what a parts list. I started with all 1977 or earlier period correct parts and the first was The Rostyle Wheels, and its rolled from there. These exterior parts included: Raised metal period correct letters on front hood and back tailgate spelling R-A-N-G-E--R-O-V-E-R, Wingard Bonnett Mirrors (NOS), aluminum vertical slotted grill, aluminum head light surrounds, 1977 steel bumper, UK spec side marker lights/housing (NOS and very rare), Scuttle (Range Rover) aluminum badges, exposed gas cap housing (NOS), gas cap (NOS), rear brake/turn signal lights and housing (NOS), By Land Rover aluminum Badge period correct and NOS, and the last exterior part was the extremely hard to find Drop down aluminum License plate holder. With all these parts on it looked amazing and absolutely period correct. Now for the interior. This was interesting. Where the exterior required mostly unbolt and bolt on the new old stock parts the interior required some rewiring and thats always interesting on a British Car. While its not complete, I began with these period correct parts: The three spoke steering wheel, Radiomobile radio, Speedometer/Gas/Water Temp Binacle dash, period correct steering cover with period correct signal switches, headlight switches and wiper switches. A complete new center lower dash with Oil gauge, Clock, Oil Temp gauge, and Voltage. The lower dash also included the Heater switches and period correct heater switch cover and instructional plate on how to engage the center locking differential. The interior Spare tire cover is a crazy hard to find NEW OLD STOCK (NOS) Vinyl tire cover. At this point I required a bit of research as to what to do with the power window switches and the auto selector. After painstakingly searching the web, I found a Company that used to covert manual Range Rovers to Automatic transmission. I actually found the period correct gear selector cover!! That was an awesome find. In regards to the power window switches, I based my box on the PanelCraft 4-door conversion that also featured power windows and made the exact same box that houses the switches. At this point, I felt it time to address the motor. For this I could rebuild it to be an efficient reliable motor. I completely rebuilt the 3.5L; period correct, engine down to the block. For this new parts where sourced from Atlantic British and these included New: pistons, piston rods, Bearings, cam, planing the block and heads, steering pump, oil pump, water pump, timing chain, tappets, and all nuts, bolts and belts. The motors produces 150-155 BHP. The car is heavy and its not fast but the motor has been restored to factory specs and has a ton of torque. Its extremely smooth motor and runs so nice. It currently has 4,982 miles on the new motor. I used break in oil for the proper amount of miles and then changed it to Conventional 10W40 and I suggest you do the same. Its a older designed motor and synthetics are- and this sounds funny- too slippery. Ive always used Amsoil in my other cars but for conventional I recommend, Castrol or Mobile. I have babied this car so there has never been and off roading, I know its capable, but I wanted this for the looks not the capabilities. When I removed the engine I used POR15 satin black To treat the interior firewall and chassis. POR is fantastic and is used to prohibit rust from developing. The body is good and straight. All the exterior panels are aluminum. The hood and tailgate being the exception. No rust on them. The floor pan on driver side and passenger side have two small holes that will need to be addressed in the future but I cleared it of rust and used POR15 for the floor pans to prevent more erosion. One thing Im not is a welder, but again its not in need of replacing immediately. I have constantly kept vigil with POR15 on the chassis and all Metal parts. The chassis is in excellent condition straight and true On the chassis, I have replaced the four coil springs, all rear bushings, new panhard rod bushings rear, all front bushings, new panhard rod bushings front, steering linkage, new pitman arm, new lower tie rod ends, new upper tie rod end, new steering box, new steering damper and tires. |

2016 Jaguar F-Type R at Monticello | AutoblogVR
Tue, Sep 27 2016This week we indulged in a bit of fun. We took one of our favorite sports cars, the 2016 Jaguar F-Type to Monticello Motor Club north of New York. Senior Editor Greg Migliore selected the 550-horsepower R variant and pushed this Jag to the limit at one of North America's prettiest tracks. He reveled in the supercharged V8's power and sound as he embraced Monticello's curves and long straightaways. Meanwhile, Consumer Editor Jeremy Korzeniewski had a similar experience. Kind of. He lapped Monticello in the 2016 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR and then went off-roading at a challenging course nearby. It's the best of both worlds. He gets to soak in the blown V8 – but also gets to splatter a little mud. Each week, new episodes will launch on the AutoblogVR App. We'll preview them here on Autoblog, but for the full immersive experience, head over to the app, which you can download for free from the App store and Google Play. Be sure to try it with a cardboard viewer, too! Jaguar Land Rover Driving Off-Road Vehicles Videos VR Original Video virtual reality 360video
Jaguar Land Rover to drop supercharged V8 for turbocharged BMW power
Wed, Jul 27 2016There are few things that sound as good as Jaguar's 5.0 liter supercharged V8. As great as it is when the supercharger whines or the exhaust cracks and pops on throttle lift-off as the air pressure equalizes, the basic design dates back to the '90s. Plainly, the engine isn't as efficient as it needs to be, but designing a new V8 from the ground up is an expensive proposition. Instead, Automobile reports that Jaguar Land Rover is set to use a twin-turbocharged V8s supplied by BMW. Scalable architecture is all the rage as automakers streamline designs in order to save costs. For example, Jaguar's current supercharged V6 is quite literally a V8 with two holes missing. They didn't even change the length of the block. It seems both of those designs are on their way out, with the V6 being replaced by a inline-six closely related to the company's inline four. It seems that rather than designing an new and expensive V8 for their top of the line models JLR, is sourcing from BMW. From 1994 to 2000, BMW owned Land Rover. A few models, including the Land Rover Range Rover, used BMW engines then and in the initial years of Ford's JLR stewardship. It seems things have now come full circle. BMW currently makes a twin-turbo 4.4 liter V8 that produces anywhere from 440 to 600 horsepower, depending on the application. Automobile says that a new 4.0 liter V8 is in the works and that it will most likely be the engine that JLR uses. Expect it to be more powerful, more fuel efficient, and lighter than what both BMW and JLR currently offer. This seems like a win for both companies. BMW gets to offset the cost of a new motor while JLR, a smaller company, doesn't have to invest in a whole new architecture. As automakers search for ways to cut costs, expect collaborations like this to continue. Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz both share a four-cylinder engine. Ford and GM have worked together to design a shared 10-speed automatic. While we may lament the loss of that wonderful Jaguar Land Rover engine, we can still be happy that they haven't abandoned the V8. Weekly Recap: Ford GT inspires guitar, foosball table, sailboat
Sat, Apr 18 2015Ford design vice president Moray Callum had just wrapped up a briefing on the interior of the Ford GT last month, but something seemed out of place. He grinned and pointed behind him, "You might be wondering why I have a boat behind me," he said mischievously. It was there because Ford set its designers on a mission to stretch and showcase their talents: design non-automotive objects inspired by the interior of the GT supercar. Callum received quite a response, too. His team produced a guitar, a foosball table (yeah bro!), a racing sailboat, a Wi-Fi speaker and some furniture. As the veteran design chief explained, "It's a really great exercise both to highlight our designers' talents, but also to really see how our design philosophy can work and how you can use it and get a common response back from a worldwide design team." Guitar View 25 Photos The objects have been on display this week at the Salone del Mobile furniture and fashion design fair in Milan, Italy, where Ford has had a presence for three years. There's also a light exhibition that apparently was inspired by the GT, as well. While this might seem a little far-fetched for the automaker, Ford said exhibitions like the Salone del Mobile give its designers another way to be creative and ultimately produce striking interior style. Ford wants this to be a differentiator, as research shows consumers are placing emphasis on the layout and features inside when they're making a decision about buying a new car. It's a little light hearted – but it's also potentially big business. Other News & Notes Cadillac CT6 platform could be used for Buick General Motors product chief Mark Reuss said the Cadillac CT6 platform could be used for a large Buick, though "not yet," Automotive News reported. The underpinnings can accommodate rear-wheel or all-wheel drive and would give Buick the large flagship it lacks. The report jibes with comments Reuss made at a roundtable with Autoblog and other reporters at the New York Auto Show. When asked if Buick had space for a large car on the CT6 chassis, he replied, "Yeah, I think it does. Yeah, I think we do." Buick has revamped its lineup in recent years with attractive crossovers and small and midsize sedans, but hasn't added the proverbial flagship that's yearned for by enthusiasts. Buick surprised industry observers with the stylish Avenir concept at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year that raised the possibility of a halo sedan.
