GMC reveals updated 2016 Sierra
Wed, Jul 15 2015It was just the other day that Chevy revealed the face of the new 2016 Silverado. And as might have been expected, sister brand GMC has followed up by unveiling its version in the facelifted 2016 Sierra pickup – just two and a half years since the current all-new model was rolled out. Though details released thus far remain few and far between, GMC has revealed more images of the new Sierra – in SLT, Denali and All Terrain trim levels – than Chevy did of the updated Silverado. It's got new headlights, fog lamps, and C-shaped daytime running lights and taillights, all using LED elements. It's arguably a more muscular look than the Chevy version, and with more chrome than the toned-down Silverado. That is, at least, in SLT and Denali trims. The All Terrain version looks more in line with the similarly off-road-focused Silverado Z71 and its color-keyed treatment. The changes ought to help GMC keep up the momentum that has seen its sales rise year-over-year every month over the past twelve. The interior shots indicate that the new Sierra will incorporate Apple CarPlay like GM is installing in so many models across its various brand ranges. But we'll have to wait a little while longer for all the details. With exterior styling as its top reason for purchase, the new truck adds key design elements: LED "C-shaped" signature daytime running lights and LED headlights; new front fascia and grilles for each trim level; new LED fog lamps; new bumpers; and new "C-shaped" LED taillights. The new Sierra will be available in the fourth quarter of this year, with additional details and information on the new model released in the coming months.
Autoweek dubs GMC Canyon, VW GTI its 2015 'Best of the Best'

For the automotive industry, the last quarter of each year is reserved for awards, whether they come from Motor Trend, Car and Driver, Automobile, or yes, Autoblog. The latest to get released comes from our friends at Autoweek. The magazine has echoed other outlets, naming a Volkswagen hatchback and a small pickup from General Motors as its Best of the Best. Unlike Motor Trend, which handed out its golden calipers to the Chevrolet Colorado and Volkswagen Golf range, Autoweek doled out its awards to the Colorado's twin, the GMC Canyon, while singling out the hottest version of the Golf, the GTI. "This is the best hot-hatch on the American market – and it may be the best car you can buy for less than $30K," one AW staffer said in the publication's article on the feature. Other staffers praised the absolute value provided by the GTI and the overall fun factor. The Canyon, meanwhile, was saluted for being "the perfect size," not to mention its excellent build quality, feature-rich cabin and overall practicality. "It's truly a truck in the most honest sense of the word," Autoweek wrote of the Canyon. GMC's Bronco-slaying SUV will remain a dream, report says
Fri, Aug 2 2019GMC won't help rival Ford in its quest to dethrone the Jeep Wrangler, according to a recent report. The body-on-frame off-roader the firm planned as an alternative to the upcoming Bronco and the fourth-generation Wrangler allegedly fell victim to a top-down restructuring plan implemented recently by parent company General Motors. Citing anonymous inside sources, Muscle Car & Trucks reported the rugged SUV remained part of GMC's long-term product plan until November 2018. It was shaping up to be one of the company's most distinctive models in decades. It should have arrived as a dedicated off-roader developed and sold exclusively by GMC; it wouldn't have had a twin in the Chevrolet portfolio. The problem, according to the report, is that the off-roader (which might have revived the heritage-laced Jimmy nameplate) should have been built on the 32XX platform designed to underpin the next Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon twins. General Motors canceled that project to save money, so the SUV was consigned to the attic before we even spotted prototypes testing on and off the pavement. The updated pickups will instead arrive on an evolution of the frame found under the models currently found in showroom. There's no word on why that architecture can't support a Wrangler-like SUV. GMC never confirmed plans to build an off-roader aimed at the Jeep Wrangler and the upcoming Ford Bronco, so it certainly won't validate reports claiming it has canceled the model. This isn't the first time we've heard about a body-on-frame SUV made by a brand in the General Motors portfolio, though. Hummer was supposed to take the fight directly to Jeep with an off-roader accurately previewed by the 2008 HX concept, but it shut down before it finished developing the model. Rumors of GMC picking up where Hummer left off have come and gone on a shockingly regular basis over the past few years, yet the Wrangler remains in a class of one.
