SELLER REMARKS |
|
There are '57 Chevys and then there are '57 Chevys that serious collectors wait all their lives to own. This gorgeous Sierra Gold 1957 Bel Air convertible falls into the latter category, thanks to its 283 with factory dual quads, unusual color combination, loads of accessories, and a top-quality restoration. Expensive? Only if you don't insist on the best.
Unusual colors on familiar cars make a huge impact at shows, and the Sierra Gold finish on this stunning Bel Air definitely makes a statement. The restoration was performed to extremely high standards a few years ago and still looks spectacular. The finish is deep and glossy, the sheetmetal is laser straight, and it fits together the way the best cars do, with almost imperceptible joints between the panels. Obviously a lot of money went into the build, but it's also obvious that this car was worth it. Note the rare California bumpers, the accessory fender skirts, and a correct continental kit that actually bolts to the frame rather than the bumper mounts like the cheap imitations. It also goes without saying (although I'll tell you anyway) that the chrome and stainless trim were expertly restored to glitter like jewelry on this lovely convertible, and even the anodized quarter panel trim is beautifully rendered.
A matching two-tone interior is equally beautiful and extremely well done. The seat upholstery shows super clean stitching and firm foam underneath means there are no wrinkles or sags. Door panels are exact reproductions with lots of bright trim and the color-matched carpets include matching custom floor mats. The dash offers bright trim and body-colored surfaces with a contrasting cream instrument panel and steering wheel that gives this car an artful, sophisticated look. The gauges are fully restored and fully functional, there's a correct AM radio in the dash, and it's apparent that this car may have originally been ordered by a guy who knew what he was doing, because there's a 3-speed manual transmission with factory overdrive on the column and factory heater delete. Talk about having your cake and eating it too! A nice-looking convertible top fits well and hides under a full boot, while the trunk is correctly finished with a rubber mat and a vintage spare tire assembly.
Factory dual quads make this subtle Bel Air a rather nasty customer on the street. The 283 is rated at 270 horsepower when outfitted that way, and the two low-profile air cleaners certainly suggest performance was a priority. Finned valve covers are another sporty feature, but everything looks quite correct, from the hose clamps to the generator to the single master cylinder on the firewall. The aforementioned 3-speed manual with overdrive makes this a superb highway cruiser that's still plenty punchy around town, and the glasspack-style mufflers give it an appropriate 1950s sound under throttle. The chassis was detailed for show when the car was restored, but it's been driven a bit since then so it's no longer perfect, but the details are right and there's no sign that it needs any attention today. The factory rear end still wears red oxide primer on the center section and there's overspray in just the right places. Factory steel wheels with hubcaps are fitted with unassuming 7.50-14 wide whites that look great and don't give away the secrets hiding under the hood.
This is the '57 we all wish we could own, and the market has always been very strong on these cars. If you've been waiting, this is the time, this is the car. Call today!

Trademark filings are the tea leaves of the auto industry. Read them carefully – and interpret them correctly – and you might be previewing an automaker's future product plans. Yes, they're routinely filed to maintain the rights to an iconic name. And sometimes they're only for toys and clothing. But not always. Sometimes, the truth is right in front of us. The trademark is required because a company actually wants to use the name on a new car. With that in mind, here's a list of intriguing trademark filings we want to see go from paperwork to production reality. Trademark: Bronco Company: Ford Previous Use: The Bronco was a long-running SUV that lived from 1966-1996. It's one of America's original SUVs and was responsible for the increased popularity of the segment. Still, it's best known as O.J. Simpson's would-be getaway car. We think: The Bronco was an icon. Everyone seems to want a Wrangler-fighter – Ford used to have a good one. Enough time has passed that the O.J. police chase isn't the immediate image conjured by the Bronco anymore. Even if we're doing a wish list in no particular order, the Bronco still finds its way to the top. For now (unfortunately), it's just federal paperwork. Rumors on this one can get especially heated. The official word from a Ford spokesman is: "Companies renew trademark filings to maintain ownership and control of the mark, even if it is not currently used. Ford values the iconic Bronco name and history." Trademarks: Aviator, AV8R Company: Ford Previous Use: The Aviator was one of the shortest-run Lincolns ever, lasting for the 2003-2005 model years. It never found the sales success of the Ford Explorer, with which it shared a platform. We Think: The Aviator name no longer fits with Lincoln's naming nomenclature. Too bad, it's better than any other name Lincoln currently uses, save for its former big brother, the Navigator. Perhaps we're barking up the wrong tree, though. Ford has made several customized, aviation themed-Mustangs in the past, including one called the Mustang AV8R in 2008, which had cues from the US Air Force's F-22 Raptor fighter jet. It sold for $500,000 at auction, and the glass roof – which is reminiscent of a fighter jet cockpit – helped Ford popularize the feature. Trademark: EcoBeast Company: Ford Previous Use: None by major carmakers.

At precisely the stroke of noon on Monday, the 2016 Acura NSX rolled on stage at the Detroit Auto Show amid plumes of smoke and dancing lights. The sounds of the powerful engine revving soared to the rafters. It was the second coming of Acura's iconic sports car, and the reveal had all of the expected trappings. Afterwards, champagne corks popped and the bubbly flowed. It was noon in Detroit, but for the green-car movement, it seemed like the clock had struck midnight. That's an exaggeration, but performance was the overwhelming theme of North America's most important show. Ford – which has helped lead the way in smaller displacement engines and early adoption of hybrid powertrains – had more than 1,500 horsepower on stage one point after it revealed the GT concept, the new F-150 Raptor and the Shelby Mustang GT350R. The NSX is technically a hybrid (it has three electric motors), but with 550-plus hp, there's no doubt this Acura was bred on the track. The theme continued throughout the show at nearly every stand. Alfa Romeo showed off the 4C Spider, which is the open-air version of a car that purports to be the spiritual successor of the high-performance 33 Stradale from 1967. On Tuesday, Cadillac is scheduled to reveal the 640-hp CTS-V with the V8 transplanted from the Corvette Z06, and the Lexus was expected to roll out its own V8-powered beast, the 467-hp GS F. For enthusiasts – especially enthusiasts with money – these are halcyon days. But make no mistake, all of this power has a purpose. Ford product chief Raj Nair said the Blue Oval uses high performance cars to develop technologies, like aerodynamics and materials, which are then shared across its lineup. "It's another proof point about how serious we are in developing innovation through performance," he said. Ford, which is rolling out at least 12 performance cars by 2020, said the sporty cars attract younger and more influential buyers to its fold, which can help burnish its image beyond adding sales volume. Toyota is taking a similar approach, senior vice president Bob Carter said, noting the Lexus RC coupe draws people into showrooms and gets them excited about the brand, even if they don't end up buying one. "They provide an aspiration and a halo that provides the attention that gets you noticed in a cluttered market," he said.
